Now that the team has joined up for pre-season training and everyone has been on their summer holidays (insert all other excuses for not being able to sign anyone), we can assume Mr. W didn''t rate Jonatan Johansson then ...

I''m sure his contract with Charlton expired this summer so would be available on a free transfer.

It''s not like we''re seeing many other options in midfield ...

Worth the salary/risk ?

for me i think thats he''s a quality player, but i dont think he''d fit in. If we are building a team around Earnie then surely we need a better target man (for his height he''s a big girls blouse in the air)

if we are looking for someone to fit in in case earnie is injured then possibly, but i suspect he will want more than reserve football and you can bet his wage demands are not what you would pay an average reserve player. jeez we didnt even hang on to £350pw Crow

I think we certainly should sign him. I feel Worthington may have a look atleast.. he did say something around the lines of; ''''Hes a good striker, and one i will be looking to sign over perm, hes one we are looking close at, and he is also looking closer within the club''''. It would be great to sign him, he''s free and great; so why not??

He was rubbish and couldnt even make the starting eleven most weeks. People who want this lightweight whose performances especially away from home were totally dire are simply getting to the point of dispair (most of us are now actually).

Dont let the club settle for second rate players. There should be a few million floating around when you see that along with parachute payments we have made 11.25 million on transfers in and out since relegation and the club will be judged by me when I see what team runs out on the opening day.

I will not settle for second rate championship signings and a second rate manager. The next 2 months could also decide the fate of the board.

Absolutely, we need pressure on the board - its the only way to split this love-in that seems to be going on.

[/quote]Maybe it was a different player you were watching but I remember him looking one of our most dangerous and positive players when he played. It was due to him that we got something from Q.P.R at home because he was willing to run with the ball and look to score goals. But then of course he''s from scandinavia so like Helveg, Jonson, Svensson etc he''s unliked despite being far better than whats around them. Some people really do have strange opinions on things.

Charlie - what sort of players do you expect us to sign then???

We are a championship club, we are in a backwater of England (beautiful though it is), we don''t have an endless pot of cash so how do you plan on getting players better than a Finnish international who has played a hell of a lot of premiership football for a mid-table side?

johansson was certainly far from rubbish! from the little amount of time he played, i think the majority of people saw he was techniqually better than most of our team. but when he''s put on the right side in a 4-4-2 he aint going to be effective! it was a shame JJ/Earnie partnership werent given a try more often.

The thread asked about him being a midfield option though and JJ is a forward. WHY CANT WE BUY PEOPLE WHO SPECIALISE IN ONE POSITION RATHER THAN BE A JACK OF ALL TRADES AND MASTER OF NONE??? Im fed up with seeing forwards like Bentley, Henderson, Jarvis,Jonson, Marney and JJ, central players like Hughes, Etuhu, and Robinson play out of position and whilst they try hard are simply not up to the job. Huckerby aside I really dont think any of these other utility players have ever really worked for us.

I would love to see us sign him but, as has been said, he may find first team opportunities pretty scarce with Earnie about so I doubt he would be happy with that. But its a shame because from the little I saw last season he looked class.

the opinions of Helveg, Jonson & Svensson have nothing at all to do with their nationalities.

for the record , in my opinion :-

Helveg was overrated and past his best. Even wondered why we didn''t seem to have much competition for his signature and didn''t see a queue of Premiership clubs fighting for his signature when he left?

Jonson was poor. Ditto comments above. How many goals did he score and before the bandwagon points to him being played out of position...where was he playing (poorly) for Sweden this month?

Svennson was slow and injury prone. However as a squad player he was certainly missed as he scored some vital goals whilst at NCFC.

All 3 could have done a job for us in the championship but you would expect all players to perform better at a lower level.

The JJ situation puzzles me though. Despite being Scandanavian (joke!) he thought he looked good and worth keeping.

I thought JJ did quite well, when he was played in his actual position. Obviously Worthy doesn''t rate him as he had some talent, which isn''t looked on favourably these days.

i was Dubios about Johannson at first but when he played i thou8ght he was a handy player with a good touch who caused problems for defenders.. i dont think he was a winger but surely as a striker he could of been worth a punt? he wasnt afraid to put himself where he might get hurt, Scored goals for us and generally looked like he wanted to make a difference.. which is more than can be said of most loan signings

jas :)
