Cheeky Monkey 0 Posted May 2, 2006 I think people keep forgetting that last seasons effort in the Premiership was pretty awful as well.Look at Wigan and West Ham this year. It can be done with a low budget. How people keep supporting Nigel is beyond me. Stop making excuses for him.
3pmkickoff 0 Posted May 2, 2006 How many more times, the two teams you mentioned didn''t exactly spend peanuts.Wigan spent close to £8m on fees alone this summer, for a club of their size that would be unrealistic unless they had a sugardaddy, which they do.The same with West Ham, but they has invested in players capable of making the step up whilst in the Championship. Trent Canary 0 Posted May 2, 2006 I didnt think last years was that bad. One game away from surviving, and we were constantly praised for our attacking football. Everyone is going on about hoofball, but last season I remember us being congratulated on numerous occasions for playing nice football instead of the West Brom style long ball.Ultimately though it wasnt a good season as we went down, but I didnt think it was terrible. ZLF 335 Posted May 2, 2006 Its about managerial style - worthy was making repeated mistakes with team selections last year and we were heading for a disaster of a season before the manure game when they expected to win and nigel only gave shacks, Helveg and Safri a game so ''they couldnt moan they werent given a chance''. Its two seasons of poor management and under acheiving with the squads we had than two seasons of poor football per se - although this season has been particularly poor from a footballing perspective - and to be honest last seasons team TRIED a damn site harder too - despite the focus on work ethic. macdougalls perm 0 Posted May 2, 2006 I don''t think last season was that bad. If just one result had gone differently (Fulham or previous Palace game for instance) it would have been regarded as a complete success. And yes, both the teams you mention spent a lot more than us. Citizen Journalist Foghorn 0 Posted May 2, 2006 Every team in history has got relegated with 33 points so I would say it was a failure. Just because it was the easiest season to stay up in history (and we failed) doesnt make our season any more of a success.First game of the season we had a striker at right wing (Matheus Jonson subbed just after half time - a regular occurance that season), left back at center half (Simon Charlton our shortest centre back for many a year - not that he did a bad job to be fair - he was better there than he has been at left back or midfield) and David Bentley at left wing. Along withe the shortest defense in premiership history.Says it all really, the squad was unbalanced before we even started the first game of the season. Great preparation. I see one of worthys transfer targets that season we thankfully missed out on as Megson got in their first, Ricky Scimica is playing for Cardiff now...... OxfordCanary 0 Posted May 2, 2006 I know that they were well established by January anyway, but don''t forget that West Ham spent £8m on Ashton alone. Imagine if we could have splashed out that kind of money...

Yes we played better football last year, but worthington still played too many people out of position.

The only one team left the prem that was there before and one stayed those being Southampton and WBA.That means this season the prem is different by one team plus those coming up.Birmingham, Portsmouth West Brom and Sunderland all deserve to go down in my books but unfortunately only three can - whilst Aston Villa, Man City and Middlesborough have also struggled throughout this season which has seen Villa and Man City only secure safety reletively recently. So I am afraid you "last season was the easiest to stay up in." comment really holds no water. You may be refering to the points tally required. Which is tough to call. Because we went down with 33 and Birmingham are down with 34 plus a game to play I believe. You can look at it two ways:1) This season its tougher because you need a higher points total to stay up.or alternatively2) There are more points to play for this season as more teams have been inconsistant and therefore opened the door for high points totals and easier survival chances. So it is by no means clear cut as to whether last season was the easiest to stay up in. I would really like to see how you backed up your theory.
