Action at centre back

Recommended Posts

Any suggestions as to what''s going to happen at right centre back next season? Will Worthy think that Flem is good enough - I hope not - OR will he use The Doc / Charlie in his place OR will he surprise us all and buy someone with pedigree who would make the transistion to the Premier League if / when we go up? Answers please - let''s be ''aving you!

doc can play alongside shackell... and would be more than capable if we play further up the field... last year he looked out of sorts at times due to us sitting deep to accomodate the cart-horse that is fleming

i would very much like us to be looking at grant from villa... a young centre back that o''leary can see playing for england once he has matured... he was on loan at burnley last season for a period and got a great deal of praise and was rewarded by obtaining 10 awards while on loan

his bio sounds pretty good... and from a poster on here or on the canaries ptv board who went to school with him suggests he is an exceptional defender... i for one could see him and shackell forming a great young partnership

doc is capable but lack of pace worries me... flem should never be in the first team again... as with holt

there is still the option of helveg i s''pose if we invest in a good right back

Smooth,

I think the guy you''re talking about at Villa is called Cahill, not Grant.

Personally I think the Doc will look a really good player in the Championship, but I would definitely like to see us get another central defender.

I think Spurs might be a good place to look for someone on a seasons loan. By my reckoning they''ve got 6 central defenders on their books at the moment, King, Gardner, Dawson, Naybet, Davenport and Huddlestone. That must be more than they''ll ever need.

I would have thought that either Davenport or Huddlestone might be realistic targets for a season long loan deal. And given how successful we''ve been in the past with players who couldn''t make the Spurs first team - Crook, Culverhouse, Bowen & Polsten then why not?

I don''t think Doc is the answer even at Champ level.   Flemmo was exposed at Prem level but let''s not forget he was player of the year when we were promoted and I feel will do a good job when we are promoted this season.

I wish people would stop staying "when we get promoted". We are starting to sound like West Ham.

I know we have a really good chance if we keep hold of the current squad but just "assuming" all goes to plan and we cruise the league is asking a bit much and setting expectations a bit too far.

We seem to do better when the public eye is off us and we just go about our business quietly. Lets keep it thay way.

Nowt wrong with a bit of blind optimism, son... Much like I kept saying "see you in the final" to everyone in our footie tournament last night, even though we had no chance!

As long as we don''t get arrogant about it and start saying that we belong in the prem, then we''ll never be anywhere near the level of annoyingnessness that west ham and wolves are at....

I''ve been saying "we''ll get promoted this year" every year for the last 10 or so, its just something to keep us happy...

Jamie - lighten up - have you never heard of optimism? Still, I''m sure you will be happier WHEN we get promoted back to the Prem.

Personally I think that Doc can do a job for us at centre back in the championship, and we have good cover with Charlie.

The only centre back I would be looking to sign would be a talented younger player who had the potential to play in the prem if they came available at the right price  - ie an unknown bargain.  Otherwise we should save our transfer kitty for where it is needed - right back and midfield - and buy a prem defender when we are actually in the prem again.

Of course if worthy does not fancy the doc then he should be sold now and a new face brought in.

I agree that Doherty could ''do a job'' in the Fizzy league but his lack of pace will be exposed if we do get back to the promised land. We have to plan for the future and in the Premiership (and increasingly in this division) there are going to be lots more very quick, very skilful Johnny Foreigner types who will twist and turn and dive with gay abandon thus rendering the likes of GD totally useless.
