I hope England dont fall the same way they did earlier, shame for the competition, however i suppose its better for England yet if we dont win the group we''ll end up with Spain. But i suppose we have to beat the best teams to  win (oh well i can dream at least) i''d love to see us win the euros however id sacrifice the euros to see us lift the Jules Rimet!!!! OTBE. Sooner theres some transfer news the better [:)]

The head to head rule is a joke. Russia had the best goal difference in the entire group and are out! Means goals are worthless.... Every team should play for 0 0.

That would screw ueafa over.

Was crazy to see Russia out. They had their chances and just couldn''t take them. Big finish from Karagounis though - lovely strike.

I know it''s unlikely, but Sweden could take something off France and/or Spain could drop points against Croatia, but either way we need to concentrate on beating Ukraine. If we do go through and play Spain it''s going to be a hell of a game! Hopefully Rooney hasn''t been sent off against Ukraine so he can play up front with Welbeck lol. Young in place of Milner maybe. Either way we''d have to play the game of our lives and defend as strongly as Chelsea vs Barca/Bayern

Loving the Euros at the moment! Just wish we could buy some of the players in the competition, but doubt we will.

I wonder when the last time was (if ever) where a team lost their opening group game 4-1 yet still managed to progress to the knockout stage, as the Czech Rep have done ?

Isn''t the head to head idea the same one they use in the Champs League group stages ?

Also, what happens if tonight if Denmark beat Germany, and Portugal beat Holland ,and there are 3 teams on 6 pts, all beating each other ?

[/quote]God knows. Not sure about the Champs League group stages either tbh.

I believe it''s on goal difference after head-to-head?Isn''t it the same for Spain, Croatia and Italy? Croatia drew with Italy and Italy drew with Spain. If Croatia and Spain draw then they''ll all be on 5 pts provided Italy beat Rep of Ireland. What if Italy beat Ireland and then get the same goal difference as Croatia, would it be goals scored? lol

It would then be decided on goal difference. That situation briefly occured yesterday when the Czech Republic were drawing 0-0 with Poland and Greece were beating Russia 1-0. It meant all 3 sides were level on 4 points and had beaten all beaten each other in the head to heads. The Czechs would have gone out because their goal difference was -2 while Greece had a goal differenc of 0.

Thanks Jacko. I knew someone could be relied upon to come up with the rational explanation. I don''t suppose there''s much chance of the Danes beating Germany, but there again, I guess Russia were thinking much along those lines 24 hrs ago.......

Further to my earlier point about the Czechs losing their opening game 4-1 and progressing, I wonder when the last time someone WON their opening game 4-1 and did not progress, but the team they beat DID progress ??!!

There cant be many occurances particularly as the groups used to be decided on straight goal difference which would have made it even more unlikely. Its a big warning to England though that they have to be on their game against Ukraine. Anything less and we will be going home as well.

Head to head rather than goal difference makes perfect sense in a league where only three games are played. It''s not like a domestic season where goal difference gives a more accurate measure of a teams performance over a longer period of time. Why should Russia progress at the expense of Greece just because they stuck four past the Czechs?

2 hours before the Russia game kicked off, I put £5 on them to win the tournament, at 12''s. Needless to say I wasn''t very impressed with them being knocked out!!!

Tie-breaking criteria

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings (according to paragraphs 8.07 and 8.08 of the regulations, and amendment to 8.07 adopted by the UEFA Executive Committee):[40][41]

  1. Higher number of points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question;

  2. Superior goal difference resulting from the matches played between the teams in question (if more than two teams finish equal on points);

  3. Higher number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question (if more than two teams finish equal on points);

  4. If, after having applied criteria 1 to 3 to more than two teams, two teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1 to 3 are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the two teams in question to determine the final rankings of the two teams. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 5 to 10 apply in the order given;

  5. Superior goal difference in all group matches;

  6. Higher number of goals scored in all group matches;

  7. If two teams which are tied in all criteria 1 to 6 play their last group match against each other (i.e., the result is a draw and the two teams have the same number of points, goal difference and goals scored), and provided no other teams within the group have the same number of points, the ranking of the two teams in question is determined by penalty shoot-out. Otherwise, criteria 8 to 10 apply in the order given;

  8. Position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system;

  9. Fair play conduct of the teams (final tournament);

  10. Drawing of lots.

La Liga differs from some other leagues in that teams’ head-to-head records are used to separate them if they are equal on points. Whichever team has the best goal difference in the two matches will be placed highest if the points are equal. If head-to-head goal difference is the same, goal difference over the entire season is used, and then goals scored.................................

That point above explains why, apparently, if tonight''s Croatia v Spain game ends in a 2-2 draw then they both go through (Spain top, Croatia second), and Italy go out, whatever they do v Ireland.

My God,there are going to be a few questions asked if Spain are winning 2-1, then, in the 89th minute, Jelavic just happens to slot one in ...........
