BlyBlyBabes 0 Posted February 28, 2012 Just remembered something (and I haven''t seen anybody else raise it [:S]) I glimpsed a bit of the Stoke vs Swansea match on TV in passing on Sunday and there were clear old pitch markings at one end which would have made the pitch shorter if repeated at the other. They have quite evidently recently either shortened the pitch or shifted it. I know a season or two ago they shrank their pitch to the minimum dimensions to complement their then ultra strong arm tactics, but this is oviously a recent thing. Anybody know for a fact what they are doing - and what do you think suits us better at the moment - a large or small pitch? OTBC
nutty nigel 7,963 Posted February 28, 2012 I would imagine it''s something to do with European competition.
BroadstairsR 2,273 Posted February 28, 2012 What''s so difficult about a ruling that all pitches should be the same size whatever? There''s always twenty-two yards in a cricket pitch after all.

For European games the minimum dimensions are greater and they have to play on a bigger pitch!

But is there a regulation size from the square to the boundary?

Mr Jenkins 0 Posted February 28, 2012 They had played at home to Valencia 10 days earlier, perhaps they decided to stay with the bigger pitch if they had been training for it.
shiplee15 0 Posted February 28, 2012 This somehow came up at uni the other week and someone was telling me they change it a lot. Apparently there is a loophole in the regulations and you can change it through the season. He also said that Stoke do it so often depending on the other team, so if they''re playing a team who likes width, they''ll make it as narrow as they can, etc... If this is legal as he reckons it is, it makes you wonder why more teams don''t do it

In the past you could- I remember Everton once narrowed their pitch for Man Utd when they had Giggs and Beckham- but it is no longer allowed, I''m 99% sure. BlyBlyBabes 0 Posted February 28, 2012 The answers to all our questions are set out in The FA Premier League Handbook 2011-12 on pp. 137-138 http://www.premierleague.com/content/dam/premierleague/site-content/News/publications/handbooks/premier-league-handbook-2011-12.pdf And to think that some people sneer at modern technology...............such as Google searches.
