Question ?

Recommended Posts

I may be shot down for not knowing this but is the only purpose of the semi circle on the edge of the penalty box an exclusion zone for penalty taking and if so was it used for any other purpose perviously ?
But by watching all the recent penalties, in any football, it''s rarely used!
Many years ago the ref would have insisted that all out field players not involved with the taking of the penalty would line up on the said line, if a player were to encrouch the line the penalty would be re-taken, how times have changed

It''s also a good indication on how far a wall should be back when taking a free kick. Maybe in the Wigan match Mr Friend could have used it, when we had a free kick almost on that semi circle the wall should have been back as far as the penalty spot, it was no where near it .
Its the same as the circle around the centre spot. Its just there as a 10 yard mark to stop encroachement at kick off.
perhaps these refs should go back to training school, ?

Thanks all, looks like that it has been relatively redundant for a number for years as I cannot remember the last time I saw a pen retake for encroachment. Do see it disappearing at all  but just curious !

I think refs had a bit of a clampdown on encroachment quite recently and many were retaken. This season they''re too busy with "out of control tackling". It seems most seasons the FA charge their refs with clamping down on a particular part of the game.

I think that it’s quite aesthetically pleasing
