Canaries seem to be better on away days

Recommended Posts
I agree Tore - we''ve lost 2 of 3 at home. Shades of Walker''s team of the early nineties when we played with a sweeper at the back who not only provided extra defensive steel but who was able to orchestrate swift counter attacks. We were the best away side in the country for a while then. I think it''s no coincedence that one of the defenders from that team of the nineties is now coaching and we again have a player who has a similar role at the base of the diamond in Crofts. I think they thought Fox would be a good option there because of his ability to direct play but unfortunately i don''t think he gets the space and time he needs. In the speed and rough and tumble f the Championship the role seems better suited to an enforcer type like Crofts.
Either way it''s making us very effective away from home. The one game away from home that we have lost we tried 4-4-2 which Cully has admitted was a mistake.
Yeah come to think of it, I remember 1993/94 SKY called the canaries "away day specialists"  :) I hope that''s not all this time around. As it''s been pointed out here I don''t watch many games, but I hear ''em all...I think Chris and Neil at BBC Radio Norfolk are good commentators and reveals whats going on on the pitch in an easy and understandable way for me...And based on that is why I asked the question to the public that actually watch the games to see if they concur with me that it sounds like they''re more comfortable on away fixtures.

The away games have all been fantastic (- Doncaster blaim 4-4-2) :)))..The home wins against Swansea (saw it on the telly) and Leicester was good, but could easely have ended differently..The home game vs Watford was not good (I actually watched this one on the telly too!), and vs Hull the game was more solid though not the result. If this is totally correct i don''t know for sure, but it sounds like it.

To answer the OP I think it''s a wide variety of things. Teams tend to play more defensive away from home as there''s less pressure on them to win from fans. Likewise there''s more pressure from our fans for us to win. There''s also the fact that when teams play away from home they more often tend to adapt their game to their opponents (playing an anchor man in midfield to nulify Hoolahan for example). Not all teams do this, Swansea didn''t but more teams especially lower down the table do.

One of the big reasons we are so good away from home is that we play attacking football. My point can be shown by looknig at two of our games so far this season. Against Barnsely at home we were 1-0 down and they game out, played games tried to defend, waste time trying to defend their slender lead. They ended up loosing 2-1. Then this weekend we were 2-0 up at half time and at no point did we look to defend and keep the lead at 2-0. Sure we remained tight at the back but we were a constant threat on the counter with Wes running at the heart of the defence and Jackson using his pace.

There is the feeling that for Lambert it''s only the win that matters. Sure he praises the team in press conferences when we get a hard fought point but I''m always under the impression that he thinks it wasn''t quite good enough. Don''t get me wrong I don''t think Lambert expects us to win every game just that he thinks we go into every game with a chance to win. This belief then filters down to the team where we''ve got an attitude that until the game has gone past us that we have a chance to get something even if we are one down with only 10 minutes to go. This is also shown by how many late goals we''ve got when perhaps with 5-10 minutes to go other teams are willing to settle for a point.

The point about always going out to win is borne out by the table. We''ve

lost 3 and you have to go down to Coventry in 9th for the next team

that has lost that many. But we have also won more games - no-one except

QPR have won more games than us which is why we''re 3rd and not 9th. We

only lose 1 point by going all out to win from a drawing position and by

taking the gamble we stand to gain 2 (hmm, does that actually make

sense?!).

Anyway, it''s great to see and great to watch and no-one''s going to

complain if every now and then we get beat rather than draw. I think the

fans understand that and can see what the manager and team is trying to

do, so many still show their appreciation even if we lose (e.g. Hull).

I think the replies just about cover it. It''s more acceptable to play defensively away from home, so teams seem prepared to man-mark Wes and try and congest the space between the midfield four and the defence when we play at Carrow road. If they did that in front of their own fans, they''d be accused of being too negative, so I would assume that we get more space to play when we are away. And we have a manager who doesn''t view a point as enough away from home, which is fantastic.

And Peas, you really should apologise to the OP.

our best play at home this season has tended to come when we have made substitutions and altered our formation to 4-4-2- when mcnamee has come on . perhaps there is a point that this formation works better at home but not away.

I think as the above reply''s show, is Lambert''s winning mentality..Winning is the most important thing, and going for it instead of hanging on for a draw is very pleasing to see...I''d rather see us loosing some games and win more than have a bunch of draws that get you nowhere.
