To anyone that went last night....

Recommended Posts

Cody McDonald in my opinion was fantastic, his pace, commitment and all round energy really picked our game up.

McNamee as well really did well and brought that extra dimension we craved.

Hooze was solid, made some good passing, not particuarly outstanding but solid.

Oli was ok, wasn''t really his game, everything in the air and up against a huge fellow in defence

Im still not convinced by lappin at left back he doesn''t seem strong enough much much better in left midfield.

Also like to Russel Martin today i thought was exceptional so really well done to him.

Hope that helps

Lappin did fine.

McDonald was very good, came on and caused a lot of problems with his pace hassling their keeper and defence.

McNamee puts in a dangerous corner/cross but needs to not over complicate things when at his feet.

OJ is no replacement for Holt, his first touch was off last night and gave the ball away cheaply when hit up pitch to him. Likes the ball at his feet and the pitch yesterday didn''t really allow for that.

Hooze wasn''t at his best but unsurprising being that he hasn''t played a lot recently, but looked to link up well with OJ and Chris Martin.

Cody - looked sharp and as always got stuck ina nd ran his heart out. Probably deserves a start on Saturday.

Macnamee - two or three really promising touches but thats all he did. Looks like all he has in his mind when he gets the ball is to get to the byeline and get a cross on but was a bit quiet.

Hughes - did ok - nothing spectacular but a hard pitch for a player of his type as was not easy to pass the ball.

OJ - some good touches but also some poor ones. Lacked a bit of strength at times. Think he is better suited to subs roll at the moment.

Lappin - did ok but too slow and will be exposed by pacy wingers.

Could you give me a quick summary of how the players who''ve not played too much of late got on?

- MacDonald

- McAnamee

- Hooooooze

- OJ

- Lappin as a left back

McDonald was really lively when he came on and injected a needed spark because we had run out of ideas.

McNamee didn''t touch the ball too many times but he looked very tricky and got at the full back.

Hughes was pretty solid but he isn''t a left sided midfielder and we looked far better once he was pushed inside with Russell.

Johnson showed glimpses of his ability but we really needed Holt on that pitch as we couldn''t get the ball down as much as we would have liked.

Lappin didn''t do badly at left back but we missed the balance he offers in midfield and his delivery in dangerous areas up the pitch.

MacDonald - As per pretty much, tireless running, didn''t give-up on one ball, very nice finish too.

McNamee - Few touches but what he did do, he did well. Looked a tricky player, stayed very wide which was what we needed.

Hughes - Put in a good shift, got around the park well but left some gaps exposing Lapps. Probably didn''t get on the ball as much as he''d/we''d want.

OJ - Some nice touches and again kept the pressure on their back four, didn''t work in Holt''s role though would have been more effective wider I feel.

Lappin - Poor game for me but not helped by the lack of cover, they looked most threatening down their right/our left. Can never fault his effort though.

Pitch was atrocious which didn''t help our play, pretty sticky. But we showed some glimpses and as soo as we scored there was a massive feeling we would go on to win.

MacDonald- Didn''t stop running, always on the defender toes and a top finish for the goal

McNamee- Didn''t touch the ball that often, but when he did showed he had very quick feet, and a very good cross on him which caused problems for Walsall defence

OJ- Tried his best and showed glimpses of what he has done, but tbh struggled a little, but was unlucky with one shot cleared off the line

Hughes- Was solid if not spectacular, just played simply got the ball then passed it on

Lappin- Was left exposed at times and let their right mid have too much space for crosses sometimes, but did well going forward. Not his best game for a while though

Thanks guys! Very helpful! Wes do well too? Sounded a bit quiet until towards the end on the radio at which point he was the difference as always.

Sounds to me like we do have more than one string to our bow when the chips are down. Sounds like we''re a little short in the target man/general bully department without Holty though.

In the absence of a new target man before the weekend, what line-up would everyone go for on Saturday?

Whilst McDonald made the difference last night, I feel he, like OJ, is better as an impact player so same again I think.

Cody was excellent, especially his first touch when receiving some difficult balls under pressure, and noone can ever doubt his commitment.

The pitch was so poor it really is difficult to be overly critical but there is no doubt we struggled for large periods yesterday and all the more so after Hughes came on and we lost the shape Lappin offers on the left of midfield.

We lost possession for large periods of both halves and just couldn''t put a foot on it or control the midfield even though by and large you''d say Russell and Smith were very good on the night.

I felt Hughes'' involvement prompted us to lose a grip on things and am still amazed we''ve come away with all three points on an evening when Walsall had plenty of pressure and our defence had to work overtime at certain points to resist.

Half the time Macnamee was on the field, the ball was up the other end but when we had possession we had some of our best pressure and he did put in a couple of decent crosses - very welcome given how many balls in the first half ended up in the keeper''s hands.

OJ not great but his turn of pace is something else and only a defender''s last gasp clearance stopped him scoring with the lob over the keeper.

All in all, a difficult evening just three days after a difficult Saturday, so a bloody good result. At least there''s one more day to rest before Saturday comes...
