mickey phelans tash 0 Posted September 9, 2008 I see that Paul Parry has "retired" from the international scene. This apparantly was due to the fact he was left on the bench for their last match. This is a trend nowadays, rather than not getting selected they decide to make themselves unavailable for selection. Players who decide they don''t want to play for their country anymore should remain unavailable, even if the manager changes. Any thoughts on this??

Being selected for your country should be the ultimate accolade, but this sort of behaviour is becoming more and more common. The Stephen Ireland fiasco is another good example of players acting in a precious "me,me,me" orientated manner.Another sad side effect of the over commercialisation of the game,I''m afraid. Evil Monkey 52 Posted September 9, 2008 Depends, really. Referring back to Jamie Carragher''s "retirement"a few years ago, I fully understood that one since it was quite clearthat a quality defender was being overlooked in favour of untested and, quite frankly, rubbish alternatives! He was also being played out ofposition whenever he did get onto the pitch, so even before he retiredI did wonder whether he should bother! Obviously playing for yourcountry is the biggest honour a footballer can achieve* but at the sametime if you''re sure you deserve a place and are instead left to rot orsimply played out of position, there has to come a time where you think"f*ck it"...Don''t know any details on the Parry situation, but I doubt its similar, unless he''s had a massive improvement in quality recently...*Okay, maybe it isn''t these days, but it bloody well should be! Shack Attack 0 Posted September 9, 2008 The problem is that club football has devalued international football to such an extent that playing for your country is no longer the greatest accolade a player can get. Do we honestly believe that playing against Andorra for England means more to Frank Lampard than playing in the Champions League for Chelsea? In the past couple of years Lawrie Sanchez and Alex McLeish have both resigned from their posts as national team manager to take over, frankly very average, Premiership teams. If the managers can''t even be arsed to stick around then what motivation is there for the players?

Here We Go 0 Posted September 9, 2008 i know what will kick the priemiership palyers in to action, we should just select a team from the championship downwards, they at least would wnat to play for there team, and they would proberbly play better than the over paid ***ho*** that inhabit the team at the moment
dp 0 Posted September 9, 2008 i think they should never play 4 their country again. they dont deserve to look at jamie carragher in his book he wrote he never got pleasure in pulling on an england shirt he could never get up 4 the games. any player who dont want to play 4 their country should never play 4 them again footballer do what every football fan wishes 4 to play football it every boys or girls dream.most footballers are over paid that all they seam focused on the money not playing 4 their country or their club. they jump ship as soon as more money is shaken in their face . ok i know your all going to say so would we but no man in the street would earn that sort of money they r on . i know they have a short time playing football & they could get injured but so could we & what sort of pay would we get .all footballer go on to do other stuff either managment coaching media so & so they all just a bunch of over paid up myself nancys . well that me just having a rant i feel better now thanks

No player should retire from their country in my opinion. Another side-effect of the money in the game.
