still holding out for new heroes

its Rioch all over again

Recommended Posts

This also rings true for when Martin O''Neill was in charge. Joined the club, he wasn''t backed by the board (well chairman, a certain R Chase), promises weren''t kept and 6 months later he left.......

What??????????

Rioch was awful..................................................a couple of players short more like 22!!!

So a guy with a wealth of experience, great track record at previous clubs (especially Bolton) and was then appointed manager of one of the most famous clubs in the world with whom he then went out and bought Dennis Begkamp to English football was ...''awful'' was he?? I don''t expect you to take my word for it but why not read what Iwan Roberts had to say about Rioch in his book. The guy who was ''awful'' was The Cook appointment and we all know who that was!

Rioch tried to manage the club with both hands tied behind his back. He was badly starved of funds by Saint Delia the miserly money-lender. I believe I''m right in saying that the board wanted to reduce the squad down to 19 men at that time in order to save the pennies. I can''t remember if they succeeded in that aim.

Correct - Rioch was knived in the back by a combination of Bob Cooper and The Cook (as he dare stand up to them). Funny that immediately after he resigned we had that emabarrasing flurry of new signings (McVeigh excepted the rest were, er, not very good).

I think that''s a really interesting point about Rioch.  Had he been given more backing I''m sure he would have been successful.  As for O''Neill, he was misled by chase from the start.

The Rioch scenario does stand up to comparison with the current situation.  Again, Roeder seems to be a strong minded character who will no doubt give the board what for if their promises are not kept.  Didn''t Roeder say the board had told him he could spend what he liked if he kept us up?!

Interesting in view of all the above that Roeder wrote the following in his Evening News article of 9th August: "I''m glad that the board has supported me throughout and also given me the financial backing to carry out the changes." Is Roeder being disengenous? Surely he created the finances by axing so many players from the squad he inherited? How much real new cash did the board supply for all these player acquisitions? Surely it was diddly squat! I actually think, given the thinness of the resources available to him, that Roeder''s acquisitions have been pretty good, but just imagine what he might have achieved if more finances were forthcoming? It is so so apparent that Delia et al do not have the financial clout to take this club forward and at the same time so frustrating that someone like Peter Cullum, who is worth billiions and is supposed to be a real fan, could not stretch himself beyond the £20 million he offered. We''re caught between the devil and the deep blue sea!
