would we be happy with dave penney?

Recommended Posts

I just get the impression he is the one the board want, has a good record with young players, a legacy of passing football teams. Things started to go slightly stale at doncaster at the end but I think we could do a lot worse than him and I don''t know to many doncaster fans down on his era, unlike say the warnings that came about worthy at blackpool. Still it''s all speculation, but the overwhelming feeling I have thinking about he getting the job is one of cautious optimism, which is more so than some of the other candidates bring out on me.

Penney has been in my mind since pretty early on.

He ticks everything I think we need at this moment in time, and wouldn''t even cost any money to bring in.

Personally, cautious optimism is all I should allow myself too, as I wouldn''t want any recriminations at a later date - it is football after all - but I would be happy with this and I''m glad his name still seems to be in the hat...

Of course you can''t keep everyone happy, but I''d strongly disagree with anyone who this that this would be unambitious. To me that wouldn''t make sense (IMO)

Again, I apologise for all the pointless cliches... have listened to too many Worthington interviews obviously. After six years they seemed to have subconsciously lodged in my brain...

I think Penney might be worth more to us than Tilson.  He''s brought a dead team back to life in Doncaster, took them as far as he can, and then quit the job on the realisation that he could go no further.  His knowledge of the lower leagues might help us unearth some rough diamonds too, although I guess Tilson has this in common too.

I find it encouraging if both names are still in the hat, and that the bigger names might have been discounted.  It shows that the board are thinking along the same lines as the fans, and that the fans might be willing to give the new man time to get his act together, on the basis of the new bloke possibly finding his way for the first time at Championship level.

I''m getting to the stage that I dont know who I want. Ignore my signature at the bottom, I would be happy with Penney, Tilson, Bowen, Crook or Curbishley. I just cant decide. Chris Lakeys article in the EDP didnt help either. More questions than answers. Who are the four? If Hunter is one that leaves just three. Penney, Crook and Grant I presume. But no - one is an ex player. ? Dublin. Thats two then. Which? And  what about Bowen? The bookies dont often get it wrong but it says we havent contacted him. And did Curbishley definitely say no or was it his agent? And when did Robson say no? Havent read it anywhere. And some one on here says Megson was here yesterday. God this is doing my head in. Please let it be over soon.
It is also understood that the club received more than 100 applications for the role vacated by Nigel Worthington on September 30. It is a list which includes a number of former players, including one still playing.
That suggests to me that one of the applicants is still playing, not one on the short-list.

I reckon that the 4 are Penney, Grant, Crook and Hunter.  Tilson could just as easily be there, although if I had the choice of Penney and Tilson it would have to by Penney, simply because any compensation saved could be put into the transfer budget.
