European Super League

I think we know that it is inevitable. I just hope that when it happens they do the right thing and establish a women's ESL too, where the women are paid exactly the same as the men's teams. It's a chance for the "big" clubs to show their commitment to equality.

Is this an attempt to get others to point out that the differences in money generated by the men’s and women’s games are vastly different, so that you can then castigate them as being sexist dinosaurs and make yourself feel morally superior?

No attempt to make myself feel morally superior. I just want the "big clubs" to prove they are serious about equality. Especially if they are trying to break away to make more money. Shouldn't their women's teams be paid equally?

No they shouldn’t. Should the CEO of a company with 100 employees be paid the same as a CEO of a company with 10,000 employees?

Why inevitable?

The big however-many-it-is-now in England and Germany won't join it. The fans will riot. It VERY quickly was abandoned last time as soon as there was a whiff of fan discontent. Those that don't understand the heritage and tradition behind football in this country soon realised it won't be something they can just force through. This isn't something the capitalist world can win (hopefully).

You’re more hopeful than me. Bit by bit everything has changed to benefit the bigger clubs. Shared gate receipts went, the top flight broke away from the rest of the league, more money for finishing higher up the league (rather than a flat fee as in the football league), ever expanding European competition (causing the top division to reduce in size), scrapping of replays (and extra time) in the league cup, scrapping the replays in the FA Cup from 2024 onwards.

None of these were done with the wider game in mind, but solely to appease the big clubs. Therefore if they want the super league then eventually it will happen. I just hope everybody stands firm when they do and banish them from all domestic competition for doing so.

The reason these clubs are big is because they regularly win trophies, however if they’re all in a single competition this will no longer be the case for most. We’ll see how many true fans they actually have when they’re also-rans like the rest of us

I agree with this.  Separating off the big boys and allowing them to run as a franchise of a European Super League is fine with me, as long as they leave the domestic competitions.  It will actually make the league more interesting.

Bit by bit yes, but this isn't another bitty change. This would change the countries football life, its DNA.

Fans know that football is a business. It's about money. Sky came in with a LOT of money. It revolutionised football (better or worse, hmm). Yes little changes came in. There's more Sunday games, lunchtime and evening kick offs. All the other amendments you mention. Grumblings on message boards, Facebook, in pubs is all common place but that's as far as it goes because the fundamentals of the game in this country and leagues remain.

Then along came this European Super League rubbish. The big 6 were on board we were told. Some owners were waxing lyrical about the change in the landscape and the great opportunity for the clubs and on the world footballing stage.

But what's this? The fans don't like it? MAJOR repercussions began within each club. Not just the big 6 fan groups but within numerous clubs across the country. The message was clear. This can't happen. Fans can only be pushed so far. Can only accept so much. The owners and clubs underestimated the reaction. The backtracking was immediate and decisive, laughably so.

Whats changed now? A court ruling? More money involved? None of that matters if the fans won't accept it. The ESL is simply unnecessary and irrelevant to the average football fan. It gives little and takes away everything. Everything they've grown up knowing and loving about football. The champions league exists to demonstrate their credentials on a wider scale than simply England. But do they want to never play the likes of Bournemouth, Stoke, Luton on a wet Tuesday night again? No chance.

Capitalism has destroyed much of the world. I hope, and unfortunately it is a hope, it doesn't destroy footballing tradition within this country.

Do you want half of your season ticket money to be used to pay the Norwich ladies team?

It's all revenue in the pot though. It's highly likely you/I are subsidising the women’s team already to some degree and I have absolutely no problem with that. I'd rather do that than £30k a week to some has-been who hardly ever plays.

I'm not sure what you mean by "it's all revenue in the pot"

The Teams involved,  do they qualify on merit or bank balance? Look at Chelsea and Man U, huge financially, bang average football though.

Frankly, I'd let them go, on the understanding that there's no way back if it fails...... their choice.
