Managerial Recruitment Approach

Recommended Posts

Lots of names floating around, but I wanted to get a feel for what type of manager people would prefer?

In Alex Neil we went for inexperienced but considered young and up and coming. In Neil Adams we went with no experience but somewhat of an incumbency effect and an internal promotion. In Gunn we went with a complete novice but a ''club'' man. Hughton had little experience as a manager but was a seasoned assistant.

So there are lots of different ways to approach recruiting for the managers job.

So Im not asking for names, but rather the profile. What should Norwich be looking to recruit?

We''ve gone with inexperience of late - should we be looking for the next big thing looking for their opportunity to step up (perhaps the way Brenden Rogers did)?

Should we be looking for an established manager with a reputation?

Someone young and driven, or older and paternal?

Domestic or foreign? Someone with the knowledge of the English game, or someone who can offer a fresh perspective from abroad and maybe bring some contacts on board or unearth a few Michu''s (first year).

Does previous affiliation with Norwich matter? Much has been talked about forming ''the Norwich way'', but ex players hasnt really gone particularly well before.

Im drawn to the idea that a foreign manager might be a breath of fresh air, but that is perhaps simply borne out of a lack of anyone domestic I really think we should be going for.

I personally dont think we should be going for a young and up and comer. Nor do I think we should be going for someone at the other end of the spectrum, old and tired like Hodgson. I also think a DOF would be a step in the wrong direction.

I personally think we should be looking for someone domestic, with reasonable experience as a manager (not necessarily at this level) and in his 50s perhaps, old enough to command respect but not past it. I dont think previous Norwich affiliation is important and in fact could be a hindrance. I think ideally though they should have some reputation as either a player or a manager.

The only person I can think of who is available that fits this bill is Nigel Pearson.

What type of manager do others feel we should be looking for? Whats the right approach?

I''d prefer a younger, up and coming manager who can innovate tactically and doesn''t just solve every problem with transfers. Managers on an upward curve are always preferable - not a big fan of the ''been there, done that'' names as if they are dropping down to this level something must have gone wrong.

I think we definitely need someone with experience, especially of promotions from the Championship. Now is not the time to go with some young up and coming name who might be the next big thing - we need someone who''s already been there, seen it and done it. This squad needs dismantling and we need somebody with the contacts and transfer nous to come in and know what they want and be able to make transfers happen.

And therefore Nigel Pearson is a very good shout, and I also think Pardew fits the bill. Ironically I am not actually that keen on either of them as people, but we need someone who has a bit of an arrogant streak (Alex Neil was arrogant - but he had nothing to back it up with)

There is something more than just the management position to worry about , ever since McNally leaving its been a mess.

CEO lasting a few months why?

I must admit have very limited faith in present Board etc to get this right. I for one would have David McNally back he sorted it out last time, and I suspect he is the kind of person who could do it again.

Given that the top brass will have realised that giving a manager a 10 Year contract is not feasible in modern football , it seems quite likely that we will now get the next best thing to that... a Director of Football. Personally, I would be happy with Hodgson, maybe if the club has more to invest Ranieri? We live in hope.

Given you have a Director of Football I think we will only likely be able to attract a newish manager, who would consider a DoF as a positive. I think that Culverhouse could be the target, but other potential targets could be Neville (who has worked with Hodgson before) or I wouldn''t be opposed to Scholes.

It''s not really saying what I want, but just what I think is what the club would like to happen....
