Where is the Manager's "bigging up the opposition?

Recommended Posts

Usually in the pre-match articles there are two paragraphs of our manager saying what a difficult team the opposition are. Unless this OP is struck by the "curse of the commentator" and an article suddenly appears, I haven''t seen one where Neil does this? How bloody refreshing. No fear! We''ll beat them all.......

Adams has experienced the ecstacy of winning at Portman Road in Norwich colours and he is urging his players to embrace the special occasion when they return to Suffolk for the first time since a 5-1 win during the last Championship promotion success back in 2011.

“It’s massive,” he said, “It will be intense and you will have two teams desperately wanting to win. It will be a great occasion and we go into it on the back of two home wins so I’m really looking forward to it. I played in a good few and watched plenty since and to be down in the technical area is something I can’t wait to experience.

“People outside of East Anglia often don’t understand how big it is. They have the Manchester derby and the Merseyside derby and the Midlands derbies and many others, but the Norwich versus Ipswich rivalry is just as fiercely contested. Both sets of supporters want it as much as anything else. They’re great to play in once you’re out there and you’re involved in it.”

Adams starred in a notable 2-1 televised top flight league win in enemy territory back in 1994.

“My best memory of the derby was when I got man of the match in a live game on Sky in the Premier League,” he said. “I think it was 1994, we beat them and in those days you got the big magnum of champagne, so I have some good memories. We did quite well home and away but beating them on television on Portman Road was a special game.

“I watched their first game this season and they looked competitive and organised. I think one thing we’re guaranteed from Ipswich on the day is 100% commitment and desire, which we have to match and better. They’ve got talented players but like I’ve said all along, it’s about us. It’s about how good we are, and if we’re at it and we play as well as we have done in the last two games then we’ll be confident to win the game. And when we do I''m going straight over to acknowledge the fans without even bothering to shake Mick''s hand.”

Just read Mick''s observations on us. I think he tried hard not big us up, focussing on the league position rather than us, but he couldn''t stop himself from referring to out "better" squad. So he might not have been playing mind games, but clearly he is rattled by our "better" position. Initial advantage to Alex.

No, hoping to inject an element of complacency into City minds.

He''s only just come down from Scotland, he probably doesn''t know who these teams are or that they should be beating us.

I got so much sh!t when I first had a go at Hughton for bigging up the opposition like we should all be in awe of them.

I love AN''s approach and he isn''t disrespectful or dismissive. He is spot on for what I like in a manager''s comments.

It is a disease! Just 3 home games ago there was hardly a good word to say for the manager on here and all that booing and hollering in the ground. Now we''ve won 5 on the spin everyone looks for good in the manager and the club. People have even started picking Whittaker in the "team for...." threads. Poor old Alex will find his pressies torn to shreds on here if he doesn''t deliver promotion.  And a couple of defeats will see the Whittaker tolerance come to an end.

At least the disease here isn''t as widespread as West Ham where poor old Sam is back in the bad books because he couldn''t keep them in the top six....
