The FA Cup has been a procession for one of the top six clubs these past thirty years, with it being won by one of them for all but three of those years - and Everton were one of the other winners. The finals themselves generally lack excitement, and are nowhere near as entertaining as the play-off finals, no matter which division. I would argue the League Cup, or whatever it is called, has a superior format to the FA Cup, and is now comfortably it’s equal.

The FA Cup has become a joke competition - summed up by the ridiculous kick-off times across the weekend. The only reason the ‘big six’ take it more seriously is because their squads can handle it more easily and, as only one of them can win the league title, a trophy will help to appease the fans. ( A trophy more easily winnable for them because the other fourteen PL teams and seemingly, the entire Championship teams, field heavily weakened teams.) This weekend is very much like the international breaks - an opportunity to take a break from football and do other things.....

I didn’t see it as a bad performance, but more so a ‘tired’ performance. Most fans were expecting a few changes at the start. Farke’s explanation, as I understood it, was having lost three regulars (Leitner, Buendia and Lewis) to injury, he didn’t want to then make it five or six changes to his regular line-up. A reasonable explanation, I guess, knowing that the next game was an FA Cup tie. Tiredness was no excuse for Vrancic’s performance today. The occasional excellent pass failing to compensate for an otherwise abject contribution. Just hope Maclean brings plenty of positives to the party.If and when.....

WBA’s promotion challenge has leant heavily on players that belong to other clubs. Gayle’s flow of 13 goals has currently been stemmed by injury, but the news that Leicester are considering recalling the ‘9-goal’ Harvey Barnes has sent their fans into meltdown. If only Derby were to lose Wilson, Mount and Tomori, that would undoubtedly be two less clubs to be concerned about.

It must be high time that Maclean shows what he can do. Hopefully he can live up to expectation.

I suspect an early defeat in the FA Cup this year wouldn’t go amiss for a change. We’re getting closer than ever to fielding our 2nd eleven.
