Yellowfuture 71 Posted April 7, 2013 How much effect did this result, first game of the season have on the psychology of our manager. First game in your new job and you see your team taken apart. I just wonder if that game has set the tone for the whole season, after a result like that your priority is not to concede, it has to be. Hughton has done enough to keep us up, we have enough points in the bag and a good run in, get this season over and put it down to experience. Next Season we will have some big new signings and things will be different.I don''t buy all this stuff about Hughton only being interested in defence, when he managed Newcastle to promotion they gained 100 points in that season, you don''t do that by defending, and a damn side more points than we got under Lambert when we went up.Give the guy a break and more time, he will come good! [/quote]That comparison is a bit disingenuous. Newcastle still had a premiership squad when they went up in the Championship. They kept most of their players. Lambert had a league one side. But I agree, I wonder how much impact that dreadful first match had on him.
Mr Brownstone 0 Posted April 7, 2013 You might well be right, but we''re not over the line yet and we certainly don''t have enough points in the bag. You can''t really make a fair comparison between Hughton''s Newcastle side and Lambert''s City side that got out of the Championship. Hughton obviously did a great job at Newcastle, but he did have a side full of Premier League players, Lambert had a side full of League One players sprinkled with a little bit of Championship experience. Yellowfuture 71 Posted April 7, 2013 Yes of course you are right, but it was the manager that determined the way Newcastle would play so it does show that with the right players he can do a good job, next season hopefully the right players will be here
Redders Right Foot 22 Posted April 7, 2013 I don''t think he is only interested in defense, I think we was interested in rebuilding the team from the bottom up.Ruddy is class, so no change.3 defenders new in the most prominent XI. and if it wasn''t for russ, it would be 4.a new DM in Tettey, a back up keeper (thank god!) and one winger.that was in the summer. I believe he most likely used all the budget allotted to him. after our 10 game run, the board became confident that we would stay up, and offered him the amount needed for a striker (hooper, graham, RVW.) the back was already sorted, we had/have the best defensive home record in the league. and our gd would be rather amazing for a team in our spot in the league if it wasn''t for 3 away games (5-0 fulham, 5-0 liverpool, 4-0 utd.) we would be on -5, with the best gd in the bottom half. and all 3 of those games were unfortunate (although liverpool deserved that win, it was an offday for us.)however, Celtic were not willing to sell, Graham wanted sunderland (there has NOT been one reliable report that our bid was rejected. he had his choice, he didn''t choose us.) and RVW was too complicated a situation to sort in one month (third party ownership agreements.)he has shown his intent for the summer transfer window. if he can transform us up top like he has transformed us at the back, we are in for one hell of a season. it is just a shame that many posters in here see things in 2D and black and white, without giving much thought to anything else. We noticeably only ever seem to go at teams when we are losing. 10 minutes out of character against Everton aside.
Yellowfuture 71 Posted April 7, 2013 He is rebuilding the team and in keeping us up is rebuilding the club as well. He deserves a lot of praise. I was disgusted when a few idiots popped up in front of me yesterday after Swansea scored and started abusing the manager, I think they thought it was a big joke and you have to wonder what their motivation is.As you say there is a much bigger picture here, particularly this season, but it''s not in the nature of some football fans, or even owners these days, to see that. Very few clubs have seen the sustained development that we have, we will get the benefits from that with a bit of luck next season.
Redders Right Foot 22 Posted April 7, 2013 Fair point CJF, but I think that can fall under the black and white part, depending on how you look at it.to reach the transformation point I dream of for next season, we must first be in this league. if that means, for the last 6 games, as for the last god knows how many, going out for a point and inching closer and closer, it is a sacrifice that needs to be done. I would much rather we draw every last one of our 6 games 0-0 and stay up, than lose each 4-3 and go down. (for this season)
