Take the £40 million?

Recommended Posts

Cast your minds back a few months......the dark days were getting ever darker as we hurtled towards division 2(3).Now we sit on the verge of the playoffs. I can`t believe those who say they do not want promotion. I`d snatch your hand off.

 £40 million to play with????

Even if we came back down, GR`s judgement in the market would be more than interesting to see.

And if all you have to say on this concerns the lack of investment by the board then please don`t bother replying. TY

Sorry, it''s freedom of speech time, I totally agree with you that I would snatch anyone''s hand off to get promotion, even if it would be too soon in the GR revolution probably. But £40 million to play with????? HA HA HA HA HA! In order to "play with it" you would have to get the board to get it out of the bank first, go buy a crowbar and good luck!

True the board would be tight, but with the stupid premier league money going around even our lot would splash it.  Look at Al Fayed - tight for years with Coleman, then gives Lawrie "I only scout Northern Ireland" Sanchez over 20mill!  When we went up, we spent including Ashton around what 6-7mill?  Derby prior to Jan had spent well over 10, I know they bought rubbish but Miller, Earnie (who did they ever scout??), and Claude Davis cost cash.  The thing to do, is to go up, scrap all short term debt, and buy young quality that will stay with you even if go down, and spend well, 10+ mill, and on players who will stay, then see.  As long as we dont do a Derby and embarrass ourselves I dont mind.  Last time we put up a good fight, but this time have more of a contingency plan - and dont sign old rubbish - Jonson, Helveg, Charlton, Stuart, Ward.  I mean we still rely on Doc, and the Ashton money has been great for us, even though it dissappears a lot.  More younger players, hungry and give them games, and see, I say, put dont spend a riasky amount, use it to clear all this short-term higher interest stuff and build for future.

By the time you''ve paid promotion bonuses for players and staff and increased the wages the players are on to Premier League wages, there is not always an awful lot of the £40 million left.

Derby have gone about it the wrong way. When they are relegated they will be a long, long way from a promotion chasing team.

Watford''s example is a much better one to follow.

I would go with the main points here.I have said that I would not like to see Norwich go up this season before now and in some ways getting to the play-offs is great but promotion I am still not sure about. As Roeder says - he is probably going to loose 9 players this summer on top of those he has already let go - 7 of those are loans anyway. Feel sorry for Camara as he has done a good job and Roeders quote suggests he is not one for the long term.If we were to go up to the premiership and to say, spend £15million I still think we would struggle. We would need around 10 players at least in. That may sound harsh but lets look:GK: Marshall, Gilks and Arnold - Nothing wrong here, should be premiership capable.Defence Right: Otsemobor - we need another expereinced player for competition here and to give Cave-Brown a chance too. (1 player).Centre Defence: Shackell and Doherty - It has been well argued that neither are real premiership quality, I would still like to see competition for both defencive spots. (2 players). Defence Left: Drury (Lappin) - Drury is currently injured and who knows if he will return as good as before? Lappin is out on loan and I guess probably won''t be coming back. So we only have one left back come the summer. Defenite cover needed here. (1 player). So with the defence done you are looking at 4 new players already! Thats without mentioning the strikers of whom come the summer we will have only Cureton and Martin as contracted players with first team experience - Chadwick can play there but he is more of a player that plays just behind the striker.Which leaves another problem in itself - wingers. We basicaly have Croft and Chadwick - Patterson can do a job there but as he says he is more of a central midfield player of which including him we have three. So as you can see - even with promotion and escalated prices from lower dision clubs for their players as a result we probably wont benefit as much from promotion now as say next season IF Roeder gets a load of players in now to flesh out the team.
