Yellowfuture 71 Posted January 14, 2008 Having only seen Ryan Bertrand against Bury it`s a bit early to make any sort of judgement, but by all accounts he played really well on Saturday. Only 18 and we have him for the whole season. I was dissapointed when Jimmy Smith went back to Chelsea as I thought he had a lot more to give, but am now feeling a bit better. A good defensive left mid field player gives us a lot more options, particularly away and could well see Hucks relegeted to a bit part player. It`s not that long ago that if Hucks wasnt in the team I used to feel we had no chance of a win, now we are much stronger all round and its a lot harder for the oposition to predict which way we will be set up before a game.Crofty is really begining to show his ability with a good run in a team that is hard to beat. Any player coming into such a badly organised team as we used to have had very little chance to make a difference. It seems at the moment that everything Roeder touches turns to gold, lets hope he can keep it going cos if he can the sky`s the limit. [:D] [/quote]This is a really good point. I always wonder why many of our signings (not to mention academy kids), however promising or respsected, just don''t deliver? I''m worried that JC might be falling in to this category. Yes some are not cut out for it in the first place, but we always seem to be reading about how someone else''s new signing or latest academy product is the new sensation and making a real impact on their team. The only recent examples i can think of that have really delivered are Ashton and Huckerby as signings or Greeno and Bellamy in the academy. Is it then, that as tfiy suggests, we do have very decent players (Chadwick, Croft, Foz, er Lappin even) just that they are put in a poorly organised team, played out of position (Lappin), given too much responsibility (Shackell), whatever? It''s great that finally some of our siginings are making a real impact with Ched scoring goals, Foz controlling the midfield, Pattison as well and now maybe Bertrand. Roeder almost seems to have the O''Neil touch in terms of getting players to perform to the best of their ability. Hell, he even seems to be getting the best out of our much maligned centre back pair (even if the cracks still show)! Any manager who can do that consistently will be a massive success. I''m still a little unsure of his decision on Brellier, and a Newcastle friend of mine says he didn''t get on with the established names up there (Hucks?) but so far the signs are really good. Coming into a team that is well set up, organised and being given a clear role that builds on your indevidual strenghts is a huge factor IMO, paricularly with fair to good players. Great players will make a mark whatever. I had a son at the academy until recently and to be honest he came out after 4 years a less confident and a worse all round player than when he went in.I dont necessarily blame the Norwich set up for this but the FA coaching models. We used to play some of the London teams and occasionally you would see a really outstanding player, I dont recall any of those at Norwich academy, there were lots of really good boys but nobody with that extra bit. I also think too many get given professional contracts but never play, it probably makes sence for the club to hang on to them to see if they turn into something really good, but if they are in the sqad at 17, 18 or 19 and not playing regular competative football then they never will develop. Academy football is not like playing in proper full on competitive games, I firmly believe boys will often develop into better players outside of the unreal world of academy football. Yellowfuture 71 Posted January 15, 2008 Lets hope the young man has a good game tonight. Interesting he has the left back position, I am not a huge fan of Camara, done a reasonable job but IMO not convincing. Roeder seems impressed though so what do I know.
