So which one is the 6, 8 or 10? And where will the transition take place? And is there a place for xg?

Is there a shout for 3-5-2

putting Gibson in as a left hand side centre back. McLean becomes a left wing back. Gibbs, Nunez and Sara in the midfield with Josh and Teemu up front.

What is a half back? It is 2 quarter backs In one? If so, McLean!? Fly half who kicks to touch....that's McLean !

i believe the original position names were based on the idea that full backs were "fully back" and half backs were "half way back"

quarterbacks is something our cousins invented - to reflect that American "football" is a quarter as good as Soccer..

Yes.  If anybody is actually interested in how and why formations and numbering conventions have evolved over time I can thoroughly recommend 'Inverting the Pyramid' by Jonathan Wilson.  Not quite as dry as it sounds, but probably not one for the all formations are the same brigade.

In Rugby, they have backs who are also threequarters but one is a first five eighth and another is a second five eighth. But of course some forwards are back row forwards.
