His wage is sort of relevant in that if you didn't have millions of people worldwide higely passionate about football then you wouldn't see anyone getting paid more than most get in a year, in a week. So there is an element of trade off. None of that excuses personal abuse obviously. And of course a footballer is more in the public eye that a bus driver- being in the public eye isnt defined by how many members of the public physically see you. There might be a comparison if there were national newspapers dissecting how well Steve Smith drove the number 41 route the previous day or there were forums dedicated to discussing the relative merits of different bus drivers (or dirty old men sharing pictures from Mrs Bus Drivers instagram).
