Ramrod 258 Posted August 9, 2019 Daniel Farke has kept his players happy by rewarding performances with keeping their place in the team. He seldom makes early changes and gives players a chance in game to improve. Unusually tonight in interview he spoke about getting defenders back from injury by which he means Zimmermann and Klose which was a slight on Grant Hanley. But we couldn't pass the ball out from the back until Leitner came on. Leitner should replace Trybull or McClean. And if Amadou is the player as advertised he needs to start too. We were inventive up front. The full backs grew the longer the game went on. Godfrey is a colossus. Our problem was the deep midfield. Farke has to make strong decisions which go a little against his tendency towards loyalty. The Newcastle home game is the most important of our opening five games. Thought his interview was a clear signal to Hanley. Good chap, but fluffed his lines twice now when called upon.
Hairy Canary 754 Posted August 9, 2019 Totally agree. We all knew we would miss the two centre halves out so that is an easy decision when one gets back fit. It's the middle of the park that needs to be thought through. McClean is ok but he's not the ball player we need to get the front players ticking. Hopefully Amadou is good enough to provide the defensive strength to allow leitner or Vrancic to play alongside.
WD40 726 Posted August 9, 2019 Don’t think McLean will survive this as anchoring midfielder. Just looked so much better when Leitner came on. That would be the minimum change I would make. The goals we conceded surprised me. We weren’t really cut open, individual errors and poor positioning. Thought we would be torn apart on a counterattack.
