PurpleCanary 6,386 Posted April 6, 2018 The Guardian has a bi-weekly football podcast, on which Paul MacInness, who is a Norwich City fan, often appears, and Melissa Rudd is one of the producers. This week they were discussing how the Juventus crowd had applauded Ronaldo''s overhead-kick goal, and Jonathan Wilson, tactics expert and author of Inverting The Pyramid, said the only time he had seen Sunderland fans (he is a Black Cats supporter) likewise applauding an away goal was in the 1990-91 season, with Dale Gordon the scorer. We did win 2-1 at Roker Park that year, with second-half goals from Gordon and Sherwood, as Sunderland went down. Can posters remember anything about this goal? A 30-yard screamer? A dribble from one end to the other? A Goss-style volley at the end of a move (which got clapped at Elland Road)? I think I may have had a VHS tape of that season, but long thrown away,

Branston Pickle 4,150 Posted April 6, 2018 My favourite Dale Gordon goal was one v West Ham that won me £50 on the Golden Goal - that was a fair bit of cash for a teenager in those days :-)
PurpleCanary 6,386 Posted April 6, 2018
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxXU_kpjJp826mins in
Thanks very much, Swindon, but that leaves me a bit baffled, as it is a pretty ordinary goal. I have no idea what Wilson saw in it that was so special.
Len 74 Posted April 6, 2018 I''m not sure if JW meant an opposition goal scored at one of Sunderland''s away games, or got the games mixed up, but Gordon and Sherwood both scored at Carrow Road versus Sunderland in the season in question - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dn29KTAOmUA.
