magic_eyes 0 Posted January 18, 2004 Anyone got any thoughts on why Worthy would have 4 midfielders as substitutes yesterday, Brennan, Henderson, Mulryne, Rivers. Surely he should have had at least one defender in their - Shackell or Briggs?Sometimes I get the feeling that although Worthy seems to know whathe is doing, that tactically he is prone to dropping the odd clanger.1. Watford - puts Holt at RB, puts Easton in midfield, Briggs on the bench. Easton has a mare, we lose the game.2. Bradford - drops Brennan and Francis, brings in Hendo and Mullers. Hendo has a mare, gets subbed at half time, brings on Rivers. Mullers has a mare throughout the game - Francis, Brennan and 16,000 of us sit and watch in horror,we lose the game.3. Cardiff - Shackell is outstanding - can''t even make the bench now.Don''t get me wrong I''m a big Worthy fan and 9 times out of 10, he gets it spot on, but just every now and then it seems to make odd decisions that cost us dearly. Pincer 0 Posted January 18, 2004 Only the manager can explain his decisions but he''s the one who sees them train every day so i''m sure he know''s what he is doing. As for your query on the substitutes, one thing about our squad is that there is a lot of adaptability ie players can play comfortably in more than one position. You say that there are no defenders on the bench, but if any of the back four got injured there is cover in Holt (right back or centre half) and Brennan (left back as he did for Notts Forrest all of last season). Drury could also move to centre half and Brennan could move to left back so i don''t believe there is any cause for concern there as there are plenty of defensive options available should any injuries arise. I believe the manager picks his bench with attacking options in mind ie if we''re behind or drawing in a game, there are plenty of attacking options on the bench to bring on to try and change the game, you can''t do that with defenders. silver fox 0 Posted January 18, 2004 From what little first team action I have seen of Shackell and Briggs they both look capable of attacking given the chance. I feel sorry for both of these players because they don''t seem to feature in Worthys plans. Briggs was player of the season for his previous club and he can''t even get on the bench. Shackell in my mind has done nothing wrong so I can only assume they are not impressing Worthy on the training ground.I am sure Worthy knows what he is doing, but it would be nice to see them given some sort of chance. I hope Briggs doesn''t go the same way as Heckingbottom, who looked quite comfortable for Bradford against our forwards recently.
Pincer 0 Posted January 18, 2004 If Worthy thought Briggs was better than Edworthy i''m sure you''d see him start every game, and with the way NW chooses his bench i doubt that Edworthy would be on there. It''s ok us saying players have looked ok when we''ve seen them but i go back to the fact that NW and his coaching staff see these players everyday in training and if Briggs and Shackell are good enough he would play them with no hesitation. I truly feel that Shackell is very close to the first team and will have a good future with us but i just think that at this stage of the season he is opting for Malky''s experience, but again with the adaptability of the squad, unfortunately, there''s no place for Shackell on the bench. His time will come though.
FatboySlimfast 0 Posted January 19, 2004 Spot on again pincer. I''ve noted your posts over the past few weeks and i generally agree with almost everything you say. In fact you are saving me so much time because i dont have to post myself. Its so refreshing to read someone talking sense, unlike a few of the posters on here ( mr long for example and his revoulutionary ideas!!). If you dont mind me asking, are you the same pincer who had PINCER 20 on the back of your shirt and sits in the upper barclay. If it is i sit very close to you. Why 20? You look older than that! One thing that concerns me is that you never sing to "ON THE BALL CITY". Do you not know the words?
