"Giving it a go" in the Prem
Derby Canary replied to Derby Canary's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
We "gave it a go" too late, had we done the right work in the transfer market in the summer we would not have needed to give it such a go in January to our cost now. But more than anything, what has hindered this club in recent years have been the decisions (or lack of decisions) made over managers. We didn;t sack Hughton early enough to make a difference, we then sacked him too late, we tried to stay up in the prem with a rooky in Neil, we then didn;t sack Neil early enough last season and didn;t appoint a successor quickly enough when we did and finally we have entrusted our fate in a novice manager with no experience of the championship at a time in the club;s history where we do not really have the time for him to learn on the job.
Totally agree Jim! -
"Giving it a go" was of course always the right strategy. The problem was we did not ''give it a go'' at the right time by preparing ourselves day one. Our problem at the time was also that the people giving it a go board/management were not qualified/have the nous/experience to make the right decisions and the inevitable mistakes ensued. We never learn and the same mistakes/situations continue!

Oliveira Sell or Keep in Jan?

It only makes sense to sell him if a good enough replacement can be found surely? Or would people rather we have only Jerome and Watkins with only one league goal between them?
Sell him for 6m, get a young hungry replacement in for 1m, use 2:5m to pay off debt o/s as at June 2017 and use 2:5m to upgrade ColneyThat''s that sorted.
....and which deluded Manager do you think would find £6m for this injury prone shirker? -

Not interested in players that will only ''play'' under certain Managers - or if they have toothache! Chris Martin''s attitude has been as bad (in recent seasons) up here as it was at Norwich. The same too at Fulham where he was not allowed to break his loan contract to return to a better contract at Derby! -
Not quite as good as he thinks he is and I am not sure that Wolves need him; plenty of striking options without him and they will probably want better given they will be in the prem enxt season. Undoubtedly the squad will be weaker squad if he leaves - but it looks increasingly like we are heading to a howson-esque tools downing finale. Sadly if he doesnt want to be here and is causing unrest then cashing in now and planning for the next season is probably the right thing to do.
Seems to have a similar attitude to Chris Martin (minus a little of his ability). Don''t think many will be queuing up for him! -
We are all part of the internet culture now, as if these forums authenticate our prejudices. We used to chat in the pub or at the game, now its on a keyboard. We used to devour the pink un and daily paper, now we have access to world wide forums, many which reassure us that our half baked views are well founded. As someone who has never played the game at any proper level I don''t have a clue. As someone who has always worked in the public sector I don''t know nuffin about business. What I would like to see with football in this country, is ownership by the fans and the community, rather than by foreign companies and big ''investors''. I would like to see more democracy, fan power, and for our country to be closer to the Schalke or St Pauli model in Germany. In the 70''s I remember football being deeply unfashionable, whereas now at the top level has lost its soul, become sanitised, and controlled by media capitalists. That is why fans are staying away, or going to grass roots football. One of the current owners successes is their small attempt to negotiate a better path in the current climate.
So the responsibility for capitulation last night was not the manager/the team/the board/Mr Webber, this time it was the referee! God help us
I am amazed that some of you bother to support the club, negativity and constructive criticism I can take but some of the idiotic crap that people spout on here is so ridiculous it just makes me laugh.
.....for example?
It''s funny, I got home from work and all I could think about is tonight''s match, not mithering about stuff I can''t control. Shame some of you other exiles can''t do the same rather than act like surrogate binners, stirring the pot the whole time.
The continuous acceptance (by the likes of you) of the dross that some of the best supporters in the land are having dished up to them give this awful board the impression that they can keep getting away with it. Instead of living in fantasy land getting excited over the unexcitable get real man!
-
There''s a match on tonight, in case yu hadn''t realised..... [Y]
What the hell has that got to do with it?

Have to smile when I hear Webber/Balls talking about the wastage/cock ups that have taken place over the past 4/5 years leaving us in our current predicament. Of course the blame lies totally with those individuals that ''are no longer with us'' and nothing to do with the ''nice/well meaning'' people that remain. It is patently obvious that the problems we have are caused by a board stuffed with individuals that are not fit for purpose, repeatedly hiring management that are not qualified to do the job. In any other walk of life they are the ones that would have been removed many moons ago!

"Daniel (and Webber and Balls and Delia) should be leaving tonight on a plane"

now wheres that thread where all the dumb clappers thought the german amateur was going to get us into the play offs
If you had half the conviction you think you do, you''d have bumped this thread during our 9 game unbeaten run and reiterated your point. You pathetic whinging binner.
"Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye"
-
It''s people like you Herman, sponsoring the shambles that we now are that are partially responsible for it! You keep believing old boy....Delia likes your type!
-
Daniel Farke/Stuart Webber....have a listen to the Paul Heckingbottom interview talking ''progress''. You might learn something!
-
About to join West Ham. The guy that should still be running the show here, knew we would regret letting him go for this ludicrous Committee! Good luck Alan, hope it works out well for you.
Good result for the Rams yesterday.
Many similarities between the two teams Herman.Three or four decent performances followed by weeks of total dross. Clearly both teams have ability but can''t be bothered to apply it week in week out.

Daniel is traveling tonight on a plane I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye!
Bowkett & Mcnally did not resign for the reason you state. Stop make suppositions to back your prejudices. Part of the problem that summer was being too ambitious, going for players who felt they were too good for us, at least a couple of whom were playing in the Champions League this week
............ ''a couple of whom were playing in the Champions League this week''. They clearly were ''too good for us'' then, and not the right players to target in the first place. Or did we target them because we anticipated the outcome? If you know that that was not the reason Messrs McNally/Bowkett resigned would you kindly enlighten me what was?
-
Bless him Lapps. Derby thinks he knows better than Bowkett and McNally too. That''s the same Derby who reckoned the team bearing his name would be promoted last season. I''m just glad he''s well and posting. I had been a tad concerned.....
Bowkett and McNally probably resigned for the very same reason! As far as Derby are concerned now that they have got the message that Chris Martin is a bad apple, it is sad to say that they look much better equipped than us this year!

Paint whatever picture you like regarding investment/non investment the real damage was done to this Club by failing to invest in the right/or even any suitably qualified personnel in the Summer window immediately after promotion. This was totally due to a Board that were ''unfit for purpose'' and a Manager whose inexperience (despite promotion) was fully exposed. We got what we deserved with boys trying to do men''s jobs and our Club, as you would expect will suffer the consequences for years to come.
Let me get this absolutely straight. Neil should have been sacked as soon as he got us promoted? And the board was unfit for purpose for not doing so?
You miss the point Purple. It was/and is one thing to get a group promoted to the Prem but another to have the ability/experience and balls to make the investment, to keep them there. Under this board we have demonstrated over and over again that we are found sadly lacking with regard to the latter!
So to be clear you wanted Neil sacked the moment he got us promotion? And presumably posted as much as soon as we beat Middlesbrough?
Lets be totally clear. What I wanted was a board/manager that understood the gulf between class etc etc between the Prem and the Championship and that not immediately investing in suitably equipped players could only have one outcome. What actually happened was lots of ''noise'', not only generated by agents/press was made about targets but next to no investment at that key stage was made. Hard to apportion blame but it quickly became clear that Neil had not got a clue at that level and he should then have gone. It has also been clear for much longer that the board are unfit through lack of football knowledge to run a Club but they are sadly determined to stay!

We have now degenerated into a very very ordinary Championship outfit and that is our future. We have asked for it.

Striking the difference in the changed attitude of our people and the way that expectations of the fickle football fan have been managed by Messrs Webber and Farke. Yesterdays result under previous regimes, playing against a poor(ish) side (they were slaughtered 5-0 up here and looked awful) and 10 men for 20m plus would have been met with a chorus of boos at the final whistle instead of the euphoria that we heard as we scraped a draw! Webber''s early announcement that we can expect little activity in the January window is a further example of that management of expectation. To offset disappointment he claims however that much work has been done in identifying suitable targets for the Summer and even that discussions with agents etc has already started! Much as I admire this man, particularly with his forward planning I suggest that this has a whiff of exaggeration about it. How can he decide on suitable candidates without first knowing which division we will be operating in. Unless of course he has a good idea and perhaps a plan A and/or B!
