Mickey Spillane

Recommended Posts

I know there is a lot of rubbish spoken on this site but I am amazed that various discussions and team selections for next year make no mention of the most promising footballer on the books. Mickey Spillane. He is young, strong, comfortable on the ball. Defends well and yet quick to join the attack. Compared with Saffri, always injured/booked/away and Etuhu, disappears for long periods, Spillane is a footballer with class. Having watched the Canaries for 60 years surely at least one of the regular contributors would recognise real potential when they see it.

VOS: I echo your sentiment, but with one slight exception.

Spillane has not been permitted the chance to completely settle into one specific position and completely made it his own. Grant has earmarked him for a centreback role, but as of yet we''ve only ever seen Spillane play in the centre of midfield.
If he''s given a chance to establish a position and allowed to really mould himself into a class player in said position, I agree - he''ll be a star.
Until that opportunity is given (and it surely must be given this season more than any other) then the same situation is likely to happen to Spillane as happened with Henderson (albeit, far more of a waste) with Spillane being unable to settle in any one position and falling between stalls.
Just my view on Michael Spillane. Thoughts..?

Agree totally. The only problem is that there seems to no agreement on his best position - he seems to prefer central defence, while we have used him at full back and in the midfield. For Ireland at times he played well forward and scored!I can understand  why he has "filled in" where required, and he is certainly acquiring experience, but at some point soon he is surely going to have to concentrate in order to develop his talent.I know that our youth coaches regard him very highly, and his technique and control are the best among the youngsters. He is still young, but as the man said, "If you''re good enough, you''re old enough!" Bring him on!

Agree with above. He needs time and a settled role. His natural and favoured position is centre back & that is where he has impressed most-trouble is, you wonder if PG dares play Spillane and Shackell together (mind you, it works on FM 2007!) as both are, even Shackell, relatively inexperienced. Methinks both need to spend some time with Dion, watching, learning etc & both could end up as quite a pairing for us.

Noted yesterday -and am sure this was pointed out on here yesterday as well- that the no.5 shirt is thus far un-allocated for next season, could that mean anything & that PG has a first choice CB still in mind as regards incomings?
