Did Delia and co appoint Grant for "safety"?

Recommended Posts

I was just thinking earlier, and I came to the conclusion that the board appointed Grant for one reason (ok, other than being cheap) - safety. For a few years at least.

Lets face it, he has zero experience, and whatever happens, Delia and co will have the power to use words to make big excuses for a few seasons yet when things aren''t going too well - like now, for instance. These words will be something along the lines of: "Give him a chance, he''s still learning". And of course, going by some of the posters on this board, they will swallow that, lap it up and go along with anything that this incompetant board tells us. The board did a similar thing with Worthington. Cheap, inexperienced as a manager - one dismal season at Blackpool apart - and then we were occasionally told that our manager, "one of the best young managers in the game", was still learning, none more so than in our pathetic Premiership campaign, when we were told this every week. However, he clearly wasn''t learning. In fact, that season did not teach him a thing, and the basic errors were still occuring upto his demise.

Anyway, it''s a very clever ploy on the boards part, which also stinks of no ambition. I get the impression that a lot of supporters are waking upto the fact that we are being used and conned by the board now, so while they might feel they have the power to wheel out these excuses, they actually do not, and I''m pleased to see many of the fans are now getting on the board''s case.

Alex - I have to ask. What would Delia and the board have to gain in giving us a "smokescreen" or whatever? I realise some people believe them too cautious/unambitious whatever, but there also seems to be an undercurrent of more than just having a small club mentality. What evil machinations are being implied?

I''d agree with most of that but they were naive if they didnt realise that early on the new manager went on a bad run or slagged the fans off to the press...that this time the focus would most definitely come onto their own performance, retaining of Worthy, appointment of inexperienced manager...no ambition shown...I actually believe that the board are on borrowed time regardless....same old problem though is is there anyone out there willing to buy them out...

Does that make him a good enough manager for us?

Good/Great assistant managers/coaches don''t always make good managers. (John Deehan...)

I think that, like Jim Magilton at Ippo, he convinced the Board that he was the man to appoint because of his passion for the Club and his desire to do well. Time will tell, in both cases, if that is enough to make a success of bring a Manager.
