Manager/Coach registration

Recommended Posts

Should Manager and Coaches be registered to football clubs in the same way that players are to stop all this managerial poaching which seems to have become popular of late.

If. for example, Grant Holt decides tomorrow that he want to quit NCFC, he cant then go and sign for another team as NCFC would still hold his registration.  Why can''t the same principal be applied to manager/coaches?

Totally 100% agree.........in principle - a contract is a contract is a contract.........which has now been shown not to be worth the paper it''s written on!

However, it is a double edged sword. Players, Managers and Coaches are, in effect, contractors - not permanent employees.

If a club no longer wants the services of a contractor, they normally have the wherewithal to dispense with those services - either by not renewing resource contracts, selling the resource, or paying off the resource.

If a resource wants to leave a club, only the 1st of those options are available. The only other option is to seek a transfer request.

There are many reasons for either party wanting to move on - from the club''s perspective, in the majority of instances, it''s normally pretty clear cut - the resource is worth more if they are sold or they are no longer upto the job.

From a resources perspective, in the majority of instances it''s down to greed - whether that be personal career progression or money

The above club and resource requirements are normally mutually agreed at the outset through respective agents & legal beagles. Unless there are compelling and genuine reasons - eg. family considerations - then I believe that these should be adhered to.

I consider the Lambert case to fit into the "greed" category. I think my main concern about this "breach of contract" is that Lambert was quite willing to leave the club and supporters in the "do-do" for his own personal progression. The bottom line is that the last 3 years was mutually beneficial - Lambert for Norwich and Norwich for Lambert - and to leave in the way that he did, speaks volumes.

I for one, always believed that Lambert would stay for the long term - the combination of right person, right club and right time, was to me, the recipe for a latter day "Brian Clough & Notts Forest" situation. I refer to the 3 "rights" above - if you look at his managerial career pre Norwich -

Livingston - 32 games, 5 wins, 20 losses, (0.25 win to loss ratio)

Wycombe - 108 games, 44 wins, 35 losses, (1.25 win to loss ratio)

Colchester - 43 games 19 wins, 17 losses, (1.1 win to loss ratio)

whilst at Norwich the win to loss ratio was 1.9 - almost 2 to 1 (142 games, 70 wins, 37 losses)

I have also stated elsewhere that he is not a stupid person, and that he would not jeopordise a move to a top club, by going to AV. Looks like I was wrong! However, I do think that unless he does something quite extraordinary in the next 2 years, then he will have blown it. In fact, as others have stated, unless he performs "miracles", then don''t be surprised to see him on the receiving end of the "breach of contract" scenario within the year.
