Account Closed 0 Posted May 3, 2009 Is there a genuine case to answer for mismanagement or do Canary supporters expect too much. Well, prejudice and personalities aside here is your answer.Several of the clubs with poorer achievement records than Norwich have done quite well in 2009, so do we drop to near bottom place in 2009? The New Football PoolsFootball Fever 4 – The Achievers Report-2008It’s a debate that can be heard every week in every ground, pub and living room around the country:whether your favourite team, or your biggest rivals, have under-achieved or over-achieved.Who are the game’s biggest under-achievers and over-achievers? And how do you decide what constitutes‘achievement’ anyway? Here at The New Football Pools we’ve endeavoured to bring you – for the first time – the answers tothose questions. We’ve taken the start of the Premier League in August 1992 as our benchmark, and our statisticians havepoured over thousands of results, league tables, club records and financial data. Our statisticians looked at:• where each of the current 92 League clubs were in 1992• how they’ve performed in league and cup competitions since then• the size of each club, based on average attendances, club investment etc• the impact of transfers (in and out of clubs)• the impact of changes in club ownership, financial difficulties etcCombining these factors, we’ve then rated all 92 clubs, season by season, based on what each club couldhave been expected to achieve and comparing that with its actual achievements that season.By doing this we’ve created a level playing field for all clubs, so that the achievements of smaller clubs canbe assessed on equal terms against football’s big boys.We started each club on the same mark for August 1992, but over the course of the Premier League era wecan see some dramatic changes in clubs’ achievement ratings as events both on the field and in the boardroomhave an effect. In the report that follows we’ve provided a commentary on each club, alongside various league tables whichidentify the game’s biggest over-achievers and under-achievers.Some of the results will surprise you, but we hope you enjoy debating it.Jon SheehyMarketing DirectorThe New Football PoolsExcerpt :Norwich CityThere’s not been a lot for the Canaries to sing about over the past 15 years, since finishing the 1992-93 PremierLeague season in a remarkable third spot behind Manchester United and Aston Villa.Only three of the following 15 seasons were spent in the Premier League, and two of those seasons ended inrelegation. The rest of the time, you can find Norwich in Division One/League One, attracting decent crowdsbut rarely threatening to make the play-offs, let alone promotion.Premier League third in 1993 and Championship 17th in 2008 – two facts that tell you a lot about the recentachievements at Carrow Road. One of the Championship’s biggest under-achievers.All Leagues Achievers Index 1992-2008In order of merit1 Doncaster Rovers2 Portsmouth3 Reading4 Hull City5 Wigan Athletic6 Cheltenham Town7 Aldershot8 Carlisle United9 Scunthorpe United10 Accrington Stanley11 Morecambe Town12 Bolton W13 Yeovil Town14 Colchester United15 Sunderland16 Hereford United17 Swansea City18 West Bromwich Albion19 Northampton Town20 Stoke City21 Dagenham & Redbridge22 Plymouth Argyle23 Preston North End24 Walsall25 Rochdale26 Macclesfield Town27 Arsenal28 Watford29 Manchester United30 Southend United31 Blackburn32 West Ham United33 Chelsea34 Wycombe Wanderers35 Burnley36 Barnet37 Chesterfield38 Everton39 Blackpool40 Rotherham United41 Newcastle United42 Crewe Alexandra43 Gillingham44 Bristol City45 Liverpool46 Barnsley47 Leyton Orient48 Hartlepool United49 Port Vale50 Lincoln City51 Stockport County52 Aston Villa53 Birmingham City54 Charlton Athletic55 Peterborough United56 Bury57 Huddersfield Town58 Fulham59 Ipswich Town60 Brighton & Hove Albion61 Middlesbrough62 Tottenham Hotspur63 Derby County64 Swindon Town65 Crystal Palace66 Darlington67 Queens Park Rangers68 Bristol Rovers69 Chester City70 Bradford City71 Millwall72 Tranmere Rovers73 Oldham Athletic74 Bournemouth75 Grimsby Town76 Sheffield United77 Southampton78 Norwich City79 Leeds Utd80 Exeter City81 Cardiff City82 MK Dons83 Shrewsbury Town84 Brentford85 Leicester City86 Luton Town87 Notts County88 Manchester City89 Coventry City90 Nottingham Forest91 Wolverhampton Wanderers92 Sheffield WednesdayLeague-by-LeagueCoca-Cola Championship Achievers Index 1992-2008In order of merit1 Doncaster Rovers 322 Reading 293 Swansea City 174 Plymouth Argyle 145 Preston North End 136 Watford 107 Burnley 68 Blackpool 49 Bristol City 210 Barnsley -111 Birmingham City -612 Charlton Athletic -613 Ipswich Town -914 Derby County -1015 Crystal Palace -1116 Queens Park Rangers -1217 Sheffield United -1618 Southampton -1619 Norwich City -1720 Cardiff City -1821 Coventry City -2222 Nottingham Forest -2323 Wolves -2424 Sheffield Wednesday -25HISTORY Norwich CityReference Index is 100 so an improvement in attainment scores over 100A failing and falling attainment scores less than 100 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 100 124 119 105 96 92 85 90 86 85 94 90 98 97 92 85 83Download the full reporthttp://www.footballpools.com/football-fever/FootballFeverReport4.pdf
Account Closed 0 Posted May 3, 2009 After todays display we are at least at the top of the league for horror and humiliation - it gets better every season.
RobbieLePop 0 Posted May 3, 2009 Well, my club was 3rd bottom for both tables so things could be worse believe it or not.In terms of embarrasment; losing to Accrington Stanley, being held by Weymouth at home and a 5-0 battering by Carlisle twice every season is probably slightly worse than a 4-2 to Charlton.I have no doubts that you won''t sink that low. RobbieLePop 0 Posted May 3, 2009 Then have faith as your season has remarkable relevance to when we went down:- Board had no idea- Overpaid and again players couldn''t give a toss- Fans resigned to relegation from early on- Zero moneyOnce you clean the shit from the top down you''ll be back in no time.
