Captain Obvious 2 Posted January 18, 2007 I just read on the BBC website that a new deal has been struck between the Premier League, Sky and Setanta Sports worth £1.7bn!This would mean that the team winning the premiership would get £50m more than they do now and those finishing bottom will get £30m! on the whole, every prem team will get a 65% increase on thier normal TV revenue.Am i right in thinking this can only be a bad thing for lower league football? this is only going to increase the finance gap further, making it harder to stay in the premiership.A season in the premiership is then going to be worth £50m+ for every club, while a championship season is still only worth around £1m,something has to be done to increase revenue for clubs in the football league, but no one really seems to care... Pyro Pete 2,353 Posted January 18, 2007 The parachute payments are supposed to be between £9 million and £12 million a year, for two seasons. So even the club that finishes bottom is still guaranteed around £50 million.
The poster formerly known as ? 0 Posted January 18, 2007 So short of getting immediate promotion, in just over a years time, Little old Norwich are going to be competing against a minimum of three clubs who''ve just trousered the better part of £80 million quid each excluding gate receipts etc . Oh dear!
Canary02 0 Posted January 18, 2007 It''s ridiculous. But whilst the cash keeps being offered FIFA, UEFA and the FA will continue to lie on their backs and whore themselves out at the expense of the competitive nature of the game, which is of course what keeps it exciting. It will turn full cycle as everything does eventually, and that will come when people grow tired of watching football. Already even well-supported clubs are seeing far fewer fans for League Cup, FA Cup and even European games as the majority know that their side can never win it unless they support Liverpool, Arsenal, Man U or Chelsea. Soon it will start happening in league games when fans get priced out and watch a different game on the telly instead. At home though, there are other distractions, and sooner or later the armchair watcher will find other things to do, cancel the expensive Sky Sports and the tv cash will lessen. Clubs will have to lower prices to attract supporters back. Then it''ll get popular again, tv will jump on the bandwagon once more, and the suits will whore out our game all over again.Sorry to be so depressing but it''s the truth.
