All professionalism vanished when he left and we have declined ever since. Whereas on his watch we improved hugely I can see your point, but that ignores the fact that for the first few seasons under Webber, the club barely put a foot wrong; appointing Farke, massively reducing our wage bill whilst significantly improving on the pitch, getting big fees for players that walked out the door, recouping more in transfers than we spent whilst improving the playing squad, unbelievably good and cheap signings of which Pukki and Buendia are the pinnacle, two Championship titles. That was all without Bowkett. And then we did a complete about turn and pretty much every that could go wrong has gone wrong. Webber literally could not have done a worse job in the past three seasons if he had actively attempted to do so. For me, it's the personnel who were in place 2017-2021 that the Webbers alienated to the point of a mini-exodus of staff, some of whom went down the road, that is our biggest loss.
Dean Coneys boots 1,531 Posted November 6, 2023 Or did Webber thrive like a parasite off the body built up by Bowkett and McNally - then got found out when his own foundations were shown to be bare? Take thse stats from my football writer today as evidence that might just be true… McNally – gross rev from transfers: £207.5m Webber – gross revenue from transfers: £60.5m McNally – revenue generated per player signed: £3.4m Webber – revenue generated per player signed: £0.7m McNally – net profit/loss from transfers: £49.3m Webber – net profit/loss from transfers: £-63.8m
canarydan23 4,761 Posted November 6, 2023 Absolutely, Webber's success was 100% built on McNally and Bowkett's regime. What he never mentioned was that whilst we have a ridiculously high wage budget and worrying accounts, we had a squad with several valuable assets that we could cash in to save ourselves, so we were never in any significant danger. We also had several youngsters who would go on to be valuable players. He sold the family jewels that were acquired before he'd set foot in the door. However, the money that was left over still had to be spent shrewdly and initially it absolutely was. I'm drifting off topic, but Webber is handing the club over to Knapper in a much worse position than it was when it was handed to Webber.
