Deco out for two matches, Eto''o escapes spit ban

El Pais Spain | J. B.

Barcelona player Deco was banned for two matches by soccer''s disciplinary committee on Tuesday following Sunday''s ill-tempered match against Athletic Bilbao, in which Samuel Eto''o was seen spitting at an opponent on television replays. Deco was shown a red card shortly before the final whistle in the 2-1 win for Barcelona, the Portuguese midfielder having pulled Athletic player Carlos Gurpegui''s hair after being challenge by the Basque.

After much speculation, the committee did not discuss the spitting by Cameroonian Eto''o, not seen by the referee, nor Athletic coach Javier Clemente''s controversial post-match reflection, in which he said: "Spitting is typical of those who still live in trees." The committee said it was not its role to evaluate such statements.
