Whenever I see Hallam mentioned, either the football team, university or just to describe the area, I can't help but think about the time they voted Jared O'Mara to become their MP, proving that old adage that you can pin a red rosette on a monkey and it would win in some parts of the country.

A couple of weeks later this interview was posted and it became abundantly clear that they had made a huge mistake, chain smoking and quite clearly hungover or on some sort of comedown.

Jared O’Mara MP Sheffield, Hallam about Music and Politics (Part One) - YouTube

For those who can't watch this, this was one of the most bizarre MP votes ever; if he had represented the Raving Loony Party he wouldn't have looked out of place.

O'Mara was a DJ at one of the worst of the cheap student dives on West St (called West St Live, natch) in the years leading up to selection. I can only think him and his mates just woke up coked to high heaven one morning and thought it would be a laugh to nominate one of them for role of Labour candidate.

Up to that point it was Nick Clegg's constituency. I think Labour never really thought they would shift him, so didn't want to waste a good candidate taking him on. Probably having sobered up O'Mara got through the selection process on a minorities & disabled candidate ticket (he has a minor form of cerebral palsy and could be quite persuasive if he put his mind to it). The student vote (Hallam is a constituency with a mix of the very richest in the country, a lot of student "villages" and many lecturers) decided anyone was better than Clegg and a lot of them recognised O'Mara from that club so they voted en masse for him. Once an MP, stories of female students being verbally abused by him from behind the decks emerged, Labour sacked him, and he seemed to forget about politics and reverted to drug taking big style.

His interview with my mate James Vincent at the height of the scandal when he was high on coke and champagne was pure car crash TV. Poor all round.

And now O'Mara languishes in prison having been found guilty of fraud by squandering most of his MP's pay and expenses on cocaine.

  2. Hallam FC - destined because of their sloping ground (oldest football ground still in existence - see picture) never to play above level 8 in the pyramid, but have a set up to rival everyone at that level, currently enjoying attendances between 500 and 1,100.

Sandygate is a football and cricket stadium in the Sheffield suburb of CrosspoolSouth Yorkshire, England. It is home to Hallam F.C. and Hallam C.C.

    1000px-Hallam_FC_pano.jpg

First opened in 1804, Hallam F.C. have played at the ground since 1860. Sandygate has been recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the "Oldest Football Ground in the World".[3] On 26 December 1860, the world's first inter-club football match was played at the ground, Hallam taking on Sheffield F.C.

The ground offers viewing for spectators from 3 sides of the pitch, the Shed End, the Main Stand and the Cricket Net End.

Followed (remotely) by Attleborough Town FC, my home town team, who have been struggling on late.

I thought he was the bloke that always used to post photos of the scampi in the Gunn Club?

I suppose he could be a binner who has to endure hospitality at Carrow Road because his boss owns a box or something.

He's Waveney. He's a weird one but normal for Norfolk; he's a Norwich fan, goes to all home matches, sits in the Gunn Club pre-match and eats his five pieces of scampi, then comes on here and moans about almost everything to do with the club.

If it is make or break, we perhaps have to call it 'break' in terms of chances of making an impact for us?

He's being used less and less at Northampton, his 20 minutes off the bench is becoming 10 mins, if he's even called upon or included in the squad.

He's 22 in September, and a bit part player in a mid-table League One side. I'm sure he'll make some sort of living in the game, in League Two, Newport County or Cambridge United or something, or one of the professional National League sides perhaps, but he's clearly not up to standard.

Contracted until 2026 so a loan to League Two next season perhaps?

Agreed, given he's contracted until 2026, if he's not getting minutes at a League 1 club he needs to go on loan down a division or two next season to get regular minutes to prove himself. At least we should get a loan fee for him, but does seem someone ultimately we should pass on.

I mean this recent streak is the equivalent to half a season and has us on par with Leeds for points gained at the top of the table, and seems to also correlate with not having so many significant first team injuries.

I know it's really hard on this here Pink Un forum for some reason, but all some people have to say is....

    I was wrong.

Was I? I set out a proposition that Wagner tends to have long streaks of similar results over his career. All that has been proven is that with a one off loss, his long winning streak continues. I'm taking a Purps position here, and say my statement means I was right either way! 😉 🙂 😜

Sam has one huge problem, one which cannot be coached away; he's slow. Anyone with pace will outrun him all day long. That means his positioning & timing has to be immaculate at all times, which makes his life very difficult.

What he does have, though, is an amazing heading technique. He can hang in the air better than anyone I've seen in a long time. I'm wondering if he'd be better as a CD? Has he ever played there? Obviously speed isn't such an issue & he's more agile than our other incumbents & no weakling. Just a thought.

Ron, I've commented on here in the past about this. I do see him as being the potential solution to our LCB position. I had the pleasure of seeing him play in CD for QPR at Bramall Lane under Beale a couple of years ago. He was very composed, kept the Blades forwards quiet, and was able to spray balls out wide well.

I would keep him on purely for that reason. We have several right footed CB's coming through, but I think I am right no left footers!

QPR, We did not 'take'................... as there are loads of canaries living in London and the surrounding counties

Not so many 'oop north' I would venture

    attendance 16,322

The attendance at Wednesday would have been boosted by the Norwich Union effect. Sheffield was the Northern base for NU from the late 80's, with many Norfolk people (and Norwich fans) relocating to Sheffield as a result.  As you go over the Pennines this effect reduces greatly. If it had been on a Saturday I would expect the attendance would have been closer to 3,000.

have found that Canaries TV is often no better than dodgy streams

No surprise, basically the same technology used to broadcast from the same source. I doubt much is spent on ensuring its better than most streams three years ago. The issue now is FAWA is so reliable it makes most legitimate sources pedestrian.

So Wagner's job now is to sub on any young player that you think might have an impact just so that you can collect evidence as to whether they are in fact good enough.

Just for clarity - does this only apply to games staged in Sheffield? The North perhaps?

And if it turns out that Wagner's view formed from seeing them every day in training is correct and that they aren't actually good enough and we lose, then that's okay?

Nah, just any young player who is a striker and on the bench when we take a striker off. We have plenty of evidence that when we sub a striker off and put on a midfielder we generally yield possession and territory to the opposition, invariably conceding a goal or two. Let's at least try something else to break that trend.

And it can be anywhere as well.

If Wagner has decided Aboh isn't good enough in training, why put him through the demotivating process of putting him on the bench for going on ten games now?

Sure, you have a different view, you're entitled to it, as you are to be accepting of the loss of two points. Me, I want to see us getting 3 points more often. And I think we have more chance of that with a young striker on the pitch keeping the opposition defence busy.

Yes, but you put young subs on to see how they do for 20 minutes or so when the result is either in the bag or it doesn’t matter. We might be rueing those 2 points in a month’s time. ☹️

I refer back to my second argument m'lord.

He got slaughtered for his subs on Tuesday at Wednesday. If he’d put a couple of youngsters on and we had the same result, I can’t see the reaction would have been any better.

But I would have at least had evidence to see whether his view on them was correct. I'm thinking of the reason for holding back Sainz earlier in the season ....

There is a particular point that the EFL investigators seem to think lengthy all-expenses paid trips to my offshore tropical island are necessary to delve into what one of them called the' 'deiberately complex Russian-doll nature' of my financial involvement in Norfolk...

I hear you have already volunteered to put them up in your tax free exile paradise, should the need occur? 😉

Agree with the OP. If you'd offered a point before the game I wouldn't have grumbled as Sheffield Wednesday have improved a lot since Röhr came in as manager, but the way the game panned out, it is one of those draws that felt a bit like a defeat though.

Could have been out of sight before Sargent came off, and that was really bad luck that the substitution designed to keep pressing them into trouble went off (after all, Barnes isn't really fast enough or got the gas tank that Gibbs has) injured after two minutes.

The criticism that I agree is justified was that Duffy wasn't brought on earlier to stiffen the defence against set pieces.

The criticism is that, fine take Sarge off when 2-0, but at least replace him with somebody that would be a threat to Wednesday, and IMO that was Aboh - they know as much about him as we do, so they would have had to set up to defend him whatever, which would have taken some of the sting out of their all out blitz. Instead we went passive again and let them come on to us. When it went 2-1 personally I would have subbed Gibson for Duffy, put Kenny in at LCB with Duffy at CB and Baath at RCB to try and stop their momentum and via Kenny take back some form of control of the ball (he's better at doing this as a LCB but not as a midfield pivot when we're under the cosh).

Last night highlighted once again just how thin the squad is, Rowe can't come back quick enough as he will be the only additional attacking option available before the end of the season.

Come on. You know as well as I do, even if Rowe was on the bench Wagner would still prefer to throw on a couple of defenders to protect what we have! 😉
