Millwall gave him a chance and got rid. If he wasn't good enough for Millwall why do you think he'll be good enough here?

Here's a short list of NCFC players. See if you can spot the theme:

Krul, Leitner, Trybull, Ruddy, McVeigh, Polston, Bowen, Crook, Culverhouse, Gunn (Sr), Hartford, Channon, Van Wijk, Deehan, Watson, Peters*, MacDougall, Keelan* and KEN FOGGO!

Millwall fans didn’t rate him and he was dropped last season after a string of errors.

I don’t rate Gunn massively either, tbh. GK is an area that needed proper investment. Maybe the Reyes is the plan from next season.

Being not good enough for one team is absolutely no barrier to being a success elsewhere (Krul? Trybull?).

As for taking the opinion of other fans as an objective indicator of talent and/or ability....

But yesterday starting going wrong when Long failed to deal with a fairly standard situation by his near post. If Gunn is out for a while, is he the best choice for our guy between the sticks? How about one of our youngsters or the Chilean guy? What do people think?

Is your view of Long based on just one, 60-min outing?  How do you think he did at Bristol?

Regarding other options, Barden & St Paul are injured with McCracken, Mair, Reyes & Rose currently out on loan.

As for the young GKs who are fit & available, they have no first-team experience and, I would guess, would only suffer if asked to perform in front of fans who are so keen to criticise every single failing.

    Missing back Worrell

    Next row Whitehouse & Parnell

    Front. Not Tough, so actually

    Lloyd, Price, Turner & Howlett

The directors etc she did tell me the order but I've forgotten(old age) but include Watling, Fish  Robinson Jex, Hanley directors, Willie Reid manager, Bert Westwood secretary & two trainers Cann & Mongomery

That man (Frederick Jex) is why children in Norwich attended the Blyth Jex School (or Alderman Jex School).

I think he's the one with round specs, fourth from the right.

There is no way back in the day that Norwich City sold their entire crop of young players. To remind you, in recent years we have sold Lewis, both Murphys, Maddison, Godfrey, Aarons, Omobamidele, Morris, Matos. Back in the day we got more out of our young players if you think of Haylock, Mendham, Barham, Gordon, Fox, Sutton, Eadie, Bellamy. They weren't sold as soon as they came off the production line. Today we are a poor excuse for a football club due to aggressive flogging of players.

    Rofl.

You state "Chase never had anything remotely so systematic" [selling of players just to balance the books]  and then you cite  Fox &,Sutton (both sold by Chase) to support your view.

Couldn't make it up (though you try to)

The building of the South Stand was forced upon D&M as it was in serious danger of failing the safety certificate and being closed. It caused major financial problems until Alan Bowkett rode into town a few years later and renegotiated the loan payments with the bank.

Without the ITV Digital problems I suspect the Securitisation loan might have £10m (not £15m), and therefore less of a millstone?

Fascinating that once again the Chase era has been brought up. In his time he was a classic football boss. Wheeler/dealer and constantly juggled with buying and selling players in an attempt to balance the books but at the same time produce a decent side. Bearing in mind he was at the helm when were in Europe and dealt with significant ground improvements, it is a fact that his successors have never approached his levels. Nothing has really changed in the transfer market where we still buy/sell to financially stay afloat and apart from expenditure at Colney there has been little done at Carrow Road. Indeed it has taken some 10 years to apply a coat of paint at the River End toilets !!!

As regards his "management fees" I would have thought they were justified. I heard he was often working well in to the night at the Club and nowadays we probably employ ten people to do his job. All those CEO's who have come and disappeared and how much do we pay Chloe and hubby ??

As for D & M as I have just said on another thread we seem to have an American busting a gut to provide us with some money. But no, at their age they want to cling on for another couple of years so leaving the Club in limbo.

Finally as regards the Sutton interview, when you are in business you do not show your hand until you think it necessary. If people feel that he was telling white lies perhaps somebody can tell me the name of any large business  or politician these days who is white than white. I can't think of anyone !!!

Chase was not the design visionary you believe him to be. Both stand replacements of his era were forced upon NCFC (by fire & by all-seater requirements). [Your view that D&M have done nothing to improve Carrow Rd has already been corrected]

The idea that Chase was justified in taking management fees is laughable. Already lining his pockets with emoluments (being an early departure from the notion that Directors give their time freely) he chose to double-dip, at a time when NCFC was financially on its knees.

Brilliant! This is exactly the kind of information we need to keep the thread up to date, so don't worry at all about being 'that' guy.

I've seen that Rose is on a short-term loan at Cheshunt, guessing you have inside knowledge that that's been extended, then?

No inside knowledge, as such, but Rose has been first choice for Cheshunt since mid-July!  I suppose it could be a half-season deal but, if I'm being honest, a full-season loan to this level is often a signal of the Exit door coming into view.

Ffs this again and the usual suspects make things up.

Chase wasn’t majority shareholder or owner. He was chairman. And was enabled by the weakest board in our clubs history. Everything that happened the board were aware of and signed off. Even when he appointed himself CE and paid himself a salary. He tried buying more shares when it was rumoured we would be floated on the stock market. He even wrote to me to find if I was still alive in his attempt to hoover up a lot of the minority shareholdings.

Between 1992 & 1994 Chase hoovered up around 10% of the fully allotted shares, presumably by approaching individuals like yourself (and offering a pittance!)

Exactly, there was time under South’s tenure to get it done but it never happened.

    Here's some history:

Oct 1984: Main Stand burned down. At this point Chase was a Director (& largest shareholder) but Arthur South was Chairman

Sept 1985: Tender for replacement stand accepted from R G Carter. The new stand was to cost almost exactly what the insurance payout had been.

Sept 1985: Jimmy Jones resigned from the Board, protesting that selection of Carter had been done without "proper financial prudence". [There may also have been a personal relationship between Arthur South & 'widow' Carter at the time]

Nov 1985: Contract for new stand signed with Carter.  Jones then called for an EGM and, as a result, the entire Board resigned.

Dec 1985: A new Board was proposed. This excluded South but included Chase, Jimmy Jones & Roger Munby.

Jan 1986: The new Board was voted in by shareholders. The Board voted Chase as Chairman.

At least he never grabbed a mic on the pitch to rouse up the fans at home or gave a canned up interview at Portman Road. Two Semi Finals in the cup, 3 top 5 finishes in the top flight and a run in Europe wasn’t such a bad period all round.

Big Bob was a bull****ter at times no doubt but our current custodians have had it easy in comparison.

Here are a few reasons why I rank D&M far above the Fat Controller:

Outside their initial investment D&M have given plenty of cash to NCFC (via donations & conversion of loans). Chase never put another penny into the club.

D&M have never taken a salary from NCFC. Chase paid himself for "Technical Services", as well drawing an emolument as Director.

D&M's exit strategy - as far as we can tell - is based around them turning down the opportunity to massively enrich themselves. In his last year as Director (1996) Chase pocketed around 9% of the club's entire payroll [£83,670 emolument plus  £137k "compensation for loss of office"] I am going to take a fair guess that the price he extracted from Watling for those 47,000-odd shares was higher than what he initially paid.

Ahh, thanks Shef. The option of an extra year certainly wasn't mentioned when the contract was initially signed, as there's nothing on my Contract Conundrums thread to indicate an extra year. Would be a big bonus for us if that option exists, though... would certainly buy us some time.

From the official website: "Norwich City forward Jonathan Rowe has signed a new contract at the club through to the summer of 2025."

As you say, no mention anywhere of the club option.

The volume of contract renewals has slowed to a crawl, certainly in comparison to 2019 & 2020.

A lack of cash? Waiting for new investment? Waiting for Webber's replacement?

Their financial statements do not bear this up - they spent nearly half as much as us on wages in their first season in the EPL.

I specifically said promotion, achieved by regularly spending over 150% of their income on wages

It is clear that closing their Academy offered a (short-term) financial benefit to Brentford. T

    Not true.

And the reason they are looking to start an academy again, is because they are an established EPL side - thus enabling them to keep the talent they nurture! Which backs up my point.

"...an established EPL side"    Don't make me laugh. They are in their third season.

Having a B team makes zero difference to losing talent to bigger clubs.

Brentford wanted it both ways; they didn't want to fund an Academy but were happy to recruit youngsters from other (small) clubs that were part of the Academy system.

And now the PL (& UEFA) have called their bluff by making it mandatory to have an Academy set-up  https://www.brentfordfc.com/en/news/article/brentford-to-open-academy

Shows how intrinsically linked the success of the first team is with the success of the academy, or the ‘model.’

Brentford ditched their academy because they were fed up with losing young talent.

I suspect the real reason for Brentford ditching their Academy was so that Benham could funnel all his spare cash into their wage-fuelled promotion.

And now that they need to keep within FFP Brentford are planning to re-open their Academy.

Another youngster rejects us in favour of Spurs. Seem similar to Matos a bit worrying if we pour money into the academy only to see players bought before they reach the first team.

    Absolutely nothing unusual here.

Young players move around within the Academy system all the time, but the lack of media reporting hides it.

Barden, Gunn, Aarons, Tomkinson, Springett, Idah, Omobamidele, Brooke, Eze, Reindorf, St Paul, Stewart, Watt, Welch, Ansen, Giller, McCabe, Pinyoun, Renecke, Roberts & Fields are just some of those who have moved to (or away from) NCFC as kids.

  19. Slightly tangential, admittedly, but one of the Attanasio 'boarding party' of May 2022 has moved on to pastures new.

David Stearns, previously President of Business Ops at the Brewers, has taken that role at the NY Mets.

So I doubt he'll be taking that second seat on the NCFC Board.

  20. 2 hours ago, shefcanary said:

@GMF but is it really? Do you know how he financed his $223M acquisition of the Brewers, as that seems lost in the mist of time? His total gross outlay to date of £46M is "only" a fifth of what he laid out for the Brewers. Although I accept the Brewers investment may have been over a long period of time involving debt finance, whereas the current outlay may be from his own funds (although again I haven't delved too deeply how Norfolk got its funding).

My view is that if he wanted to he could easily afford a fair price for the club immediately, its just his agreement with Delia and Michael and his "friendly" approach to takeovers (as with the Selig's before) that is holding him back.

The phrase "Delia Smith owns NCFC" was never completely accurate, but was widely used & accepted as a reasonable interpretation of the situation .

I believe the same applies to Attanasio.

The Milwaukee Brewers were sold to a group headed by Mark Attanasio. The group included locals who had been part of the previous ownership, as well as Mates of Mark. The Brewers ownership group is said be around sixteen.

Reports from 2005 suggest that Attanasio's individual ownership slice was just "45%". And, if new investors have been brought in, then that figure may now be even lower.

And, closer to home, even 'Norfolk' (the investment vehicle) isn't just Attanasio. 27.9% is owned by Richard Ressler - who is prob part-owner of the Brewers - with a further 16% owned by other minor parties

So can we please stop thinking that Attanasio is our Abramovich or Jack Walker.

The Brewers signed a 25-year lease and committed a maximum of $63m for renovations of the Spring Training complex, but the City of Phoenix made an immediate $10m contribution and will hand over $60.6m to operate it ($1.4m p.a with an annual 4% increase.)

Again, nothing coming out of Attanasio's pocket.

It would appear that the state of Arizona also contributed around $5.7m towards costs of the renovation.
