This all begs the question about the need to spend money on the likes of a Curtis Davies (£4m?) This cash could be spent elsewhere. RM''s ability in central defence was never really in doubt, but the way Ryan Bennett stepped up to the mark towards the end of the season surely indicates that we are strong enough to enter the season with these four in this position. It is good to have the versatile Stephen Whittaker on-board as well and similar at left-back would be ideal. Hughton seems very adept at constructing a competent defence.
