How far have we come??

Recommended Posts

An excellent article, note when it was written...

Tipping Point by Slater Dated 29th October 2005

Today was the day when the the consequences of *not* making a change became potentially worse than the risks of making that change.

What''s the best prognosis if we just sit tight and hope Worthy can turn it round? Right now it''s something like we avoid relegation, lose a number of key players and have to embark on a rebuilding job under the stewardship of someone who has managed a team that consistently loses games for over a season and a quarter.

And in the short term, what can Worthy say or do that he hasn''t tried already - many, many times? Whatever it is doesn''t work anymore.

The football side of our club is a failing organisation. And failing organisations fail partly because of the psychology of the people who work for that organisation. We''ve got got key players (Green and Ashton) who clearly are thinking "what the f**k am I doing wasting my time with these idiots" and other players who have lost faith in the management. It''s a workplace for the players and we all know how the buck is shifted when things go wrong at work.

Take today''s game; it''s not as if we were awful. We could have won it on another day. But that''s been the case for over a year. There''s a certain amount of fatalism - "we play for a team that loses games of football and afterwards we do the same things in training and continue to lose games of football".

It''s all gone a lot further and deeper than being a simple question of tactics, training methods or team selection. Whatever he does isn''t going to make much of a positive difference - we''re relying on fate to turn it around.

I don''t blame or dislike Worthy for any of this. I''m sure that with a fresh start elsewhere with another group of players his methods would get positive results. Not here though - or rather - not here with these players.

The club itself isn''t helping very much. By, for example, putting a spin on the Birmingham game so a defeat is regarded as a victory the low expectations that have got us into this mess are given another run out. It is a business and they should expect more from their managers.

A change will come. Love or hate him, Burley did achieved far more with Ipswich than Worthington has for us but even stuffy old, out-of-touch Ipswich cold bloodedly stuck the knife in after roughly the same period of failure as we''ve endured.

Those of us who want him to go soon have the interests of the club at heart. Our "loyalty" and "pride" is just as strong as those who support Worthington. And today it''s about time anyone who has the interests of the club at heart woke up and smelt the coffee.

Amen.

Posted 4 months ago, could have been posted today - nothing has changed in 4 months of football.  I think what he says sums up most peoples opinions of worthy.
