  1. An interesting piece in HJS (Health Service Journal) analysing the deaths of "119" NHS staff from Covid 19

Comments on the piece look to be only from those in the healthcare profession

Couple of bullet points below but there are many other interesting early findings from the data.

The high percentage of both BAME admissions and the high percentage of BAME deaths amongst NHS workers

That there had been zero deaths of any NHS staff working in ICU`s

Overall deaths of front facing NHS staff no higher than in general population

Not sure why you started that with “but”. If there is only subjective truth then you need to be able to assess everything and make your own educated decisions. Being able to identify which sources are more reliable or less reliable is an essential part of being able to do so.

But, I was quoting post modernist theory which does not trouble itself with logic, facts or reliable sources

It seems a lot of people have not read the warnings of dangerous fake news. I think it was one of the Scandinavian countries that has recognising fake news in the education syllabus. UK needs it too.

But post modernist teachers also tell children that there are no objective truths, only personal subjective ones

  4. I will not copy paste the full Wikipedia page  for 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic In Taiwan but post the link ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_coronavirus_pandemic_in_Taiwan ) and one of the more interesting passages.

Please note the date and that the CCP blocks Taiwan from being a member of WHO.

    Preventive measures

    Before first case reported

On 31 December 2019, Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) implemented inspection measures for inbound flights from Wuhan, China in response to reports of an unidentified outbreak.[39] The passengers of all such flights were inspected by health officials before disembarking.[39] A six-year-old passenger who transferred in Wuhan and developed a fever was closely monitored by CDC.[40] At this time, there were alleged to be 27 cases of the new pneumonia in Wuhan.[40]

By 5 January 2020, the Taiwan CDC began monitoring all individuals who had travelled to Wuhan within fourteen days and exhibited a fever or symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections. These people were screened for 26 known pathogens, including SARS and Middle East respiratory syndrome, and those testing positive were quarantined.[8]

tEdit - forgot to say that as of 13 April, there have only been 395 confirmed Coronairus cases, including six deaths in Taiwan

  5. No paywall for me, they must hae you on a "list" Tilly

Norwich City sticking to their guns over furloughing staff, and their fans are on board with it

    Nor

Norwich City currently have no plans to reverse their decision to furlough some staff, although the club is facing much less pressure from their own supporters than experienced by their Premier League counterparts.

Norwich and Newcastle United are now the only Premier League clubs who are using the government’s furlough scheme after Bournemouth followed Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in changing their stance.

Bournemouth said they had “listened to our supporters” as they rowed back on their original decision to make use of the scheme.

Liverpool and Tottenham faced similar opposition from their fans, many of whom were infuriated by the prospect of the club taking taxpayer money.

Telegraph Sport understands Norwich have received objections from some fans but there is an acceptance among leading supporter groups that the club’s financial status, and their perilous position in the Premier League, means that furloughing staff is a necessary measure.

folk club and Newcastle United are now the only Premier League clubs who are using the government’s furlough scheme

Daniel Farke’s side are currently at the foot of the Premier League table, four points off 19th-placed Aston Villa and six points away from safety.

Norwich are a self-financing club who lack the spending power of their Premier League rivals. The club spent only around £1m in last summer’s transfer window, following their promotion from the Championship.

“You have to look at it in the context of Norwich City as a club and how it is financed,” said Robin Sainty, the chair of the Canaries Trust. “Compared to others, we don’t have the same financial backing from owners. One the one hand the club can furlough staff and top up their wages, and on the other hand they could make them redundant because they cannot afford to keep them on when they are not producing anything. It is very difficult.

“There will be fans who will say they should not be furloughing staff. We speak to the club on a regular basis and we talked about this in some depth, and I can see where the club is coming from.”

Norwich remain in discussions with their players over possible wage deferrals. The situation is further complicated by their position in the Premier League table as their players would already face a significant salary reduction if they are relegated.

Farke, the players and senior staff have donated some of their salaries towards the club’s Covid-19 community project, with more than £200,000 raised. As part of the project, food packages and vital medication has been delivered to vulnerable families in the local area.

  6. Goverments are acting on the best advise and modelling they can. The situation is evolving and changing as new information and data comes in all the time. Whatever they do, someone will say it is wrong, even the experts in this field disagree on strategies

This is from the WHO website from the 12/01/2020 and I post this not to have a pop at the WHO but to show that best advice at any moment is just that.

    Full statement is here https://www.who.int/csr/don/12-january-2020-novel-coronavirus-china/en/

    WHO advice

Based on information provided by national authorities, WHO’s recommendations on public health measures and surveillance for novel coronaviruses apply.

WHO does not recommend any specific health measures for travellers. In case of symptoms suggestive of respiratory illness either during or after travel, travellers are encouraged to seek medical attention and share travel history with their healthcare provider. Travel guidance has been updated.

WHO advises against the application of any travel or trade restrictions on China based on the information currently available on this event.

Serious question: I'm going shopping this morning, would wearing gloves help? I understand the virus doesn't live long on fabric surfaces.

With the caveat that this is only what I have read................

Science is still unsure how long the virus can live on any surface and even if fabric gloves were effective then every item you buy will already have been touched by at least one other person.

do we really needs tables, or an update on scores

has it not occured to some that there is almost certainly some on here who are extrememly vunerable, due to existing health conditions

are these numbers any help to their well being - or a way to calm down things

    to lessen the panic

if not here's something you could play as you read them out

"greetingfs pop pickers.....we have the deaths from the 3rd Saturday in the month

and up from number 12 we have Korea with a huge leap of 327 deaths over night.

,down to number nine is Spain with only 294 and a non mover is the UK with excatly 260 the same as yesterday....."

I like to be informed of what is happening from home and others like to expose themselves and multiple others to the possibility of spreading the virus for the sake of a pint of milk

Italians deaths continue to rise per day, 793 today, 4825 total.

Though New York Time article said average age of Italian death is 78.5

    Is this table correct?

Only 111 new cases in the UK is very good news
