Didn't Farke say he saw Vrancic as more of a number 10? If so, why the dickens would you stick him in defensive midfield?

I'd probably go with this line-up.

    GK: Tim KRUL
    RB: Max AARONS
    RCB: Christoph ZIMMERMANN
    LCB: Ben GODFREY
    LB: Xavi QUINTILLA
    DCM: Oliver SKIPP
    DCM: Kenny MCLEAN
    RAM: Emi BUENDIA
    CAM: Kieran DOWELL
    LAM: Todd CANTWELL
    CF: Teemu PUKKI

Subs: McGovern (GK), Gibson, Rupp, Hernandez, Placheta, Hernandez, Hugill.

I really want to see Buendia in the hole though. If he's in the hole, then one of our speedsters can take the left flank, and I'd like Rupp on the right then as he's defensively much better, and Aarons can surge from deep to greater effect.

I’d probably go with this as well. Although might possibly start with Hernandez instead of Cantwell, don’t know. Suppose it would probably be more threatening to have bring on 2 pairs of pacy legs against tiring legs though, as I you don’t really need pacy players at the start

Some of those weren't red cards. The Battle of Bramall Lane between Wolves and Sheffield United saw three red cards for a Warnock-managed Sheffield United, but they were reduced to six players when two went off injured - including former Canary Robert Ullathorne.

I seem to recall that one of the teams was Sheffield United, it’s just when I found about the Battle of Bramall Lane it seemed far too early in my time as a Canary to fit the bill - I was only a kid back then, not taking any notice of other teams, and too young to even be following us like I do now. I think I must have been told about that game later on in my life

  3. As they both have PL experience now I think it would probably be best keep them as they could turn out handy this season in our promotion campaign. As the start to this season has been delayed there are also a lot more midweek fixtures crammed in, and so to keep as many of our best players as possible would be great in case of this causes fatigue to players in the run up to following fixtures (that’s why I think it’s good to be out of the cup, the next round is played over the course of tomorrow, Wednesday, and Thursday nights)

If we do manage to bounce straight back up, their PL experience could also turn out vital in our fight for PL survival

I know there was the Battle of Bramall Lane, with old Colin W in charge of Sheffield, but there may have been another one.

Tried to look it up on Google but couldn’t find any that seemed to match. Saw the Battle of Bramall Lane - didn’t fit as I was only a kid back then and not taking any notice of other games. Also thought I was watching Soccer Saturday or Final Score at the time it happened - back then I was only listening with my Dad to our games on Radio Norfolk

    • Thanks 1

  5. It’s all about finances. The only reason we did what we did was to play it safe because we were already in debt and couldn’t spend much because of the risks if we still went straight back down. If we had £60/80m available to spend, then we would have spent a good amount of it. Lets see how the Baggies do this season then - just like Fulham they start off with a 3-0 home defeat

  6. I know it took a long time to find the net, but I feel that we’re the better the better side overall. Huddersfield started off quite threatening, but once we got going they turned very defensive. Lets not forget that the ref also denied us 2 clear spot-kicks, we worked hard to break down their tight defence, and the full time stats said we made 16 attempts, 5 on target, Huddersfield had 7, 1 on target.

Lets also not forget at the end of the day, 3 points is 3 points.

It seems to me like some fans on here were expecting us to thrash them

True, but better teams would have buried a couple of the chances they did have. Apart from Onel's individual brilliance, we didn't create much at all in the way of chances.

Huddersfield started off better, then after about 12 minutes or so we started threatening them. Huddersfield then turned much more defensive and pretty much “parked the bus”. We were looking far more likely to score and as the ball was more near the halfway line or in Huddersfield’s half. Personally I felt we were the better side and deserved to win - 16 attempts, 5 on target, Huddersfield 7 attempts, 1 on target

It’s also not easy to score when you’re near the halfway line and have to get past almost all the opposition

  8. I’ve never taken really taken any notice of pace in players and until I’d seen some posts mentioning the speed he ran to the run up to the goal and watched the highlights I hadn’t seen it, as although I watched the full game I was always focused on the ball. He ran like a rocket and just like others have said I think him and Hernandez could turn out as a deadly combination for the match day squad, one to start, one for the bench as they work out great to bring on against tired legs

  9. Huddersfield started off the better side then after 10mins or so we started improving, Huddersfield turned much more defensive and we dominated the game. I know it was looking to end goalless, but Huddersfield had pretty much “parked the bus” and I felt we were by far the better side - 16 attempts, 5 on target, Huddersfield 7 attempts, 1 on target and so I feel we deserved to win

Completely agree. The usual cry of "60 minutes" isn't always a good one. It is how I tend to play on Football Manager. Pace on both wings and some lesser-spotted ****housery in putting the experience of Rupp on for Cantwell. Oh, and before I forget, hopefully he always keeps one of Hernandez or Placheta on the bench for such a sub. Express pace against tiring legs is always entertaining.

Agree with your views there. With the exception of injuries/dismissals it’s not always great to make the first sub too early, unless it’s likely they will be better than the player you’re taking off or have an impact on the opposition. Unless I was forced, I wouldn’t make the final sub until the last 10mins, as I always get nervous when we’ve made all our subs because of the risk if we lose our keeper. As Placheta is very pacy, just like Hernandez I think that one should start and one should be on the bench, as they could both make an impact coming on as a sub against tiring legs

  11. Can never tell how a team will do by their opening result, as there’s far to much time left. I mean how many points separate top and the drop zone? Just 3. The earliest you can tell is about half way through the season, and that’s only if they have a big points margin in comparison to other teams. In the 14-15 season we were mid-table around Christmas, then Alex Neil arrived and we ended up finishing 3rd

Nice to hear. Referees often get criticism for not admitting their schnitzers, so you have to say fair play to him there. Besides, if you're in doubt on penalties, it's less controversial to say "no".

Agree with you there. It’s best for a ref to only give a penalty/red if they’re certain, and although he denied us 2 penalties, I also thought he could have sent Cantwell off for his aerial challenge. At least the ref had the decency to apologise

  13. Although I can’t tell about his defending yet, Quintilla looks like he could be deadly with set pieces. Skipp also did very well and a shame we don’t have him with an option to buy at the end of the season. Think both could play a huge part for us this season

Although he didn’t really do anything, think Placheta could be another Hernandez - one to start, one on the bench as they both have great pace in them

  14. The relegated teams usually turn out to be favourites for automatic promotion as they have players with upper level experience, and the newly promoted teams usually turn out favourites for relegation as they often don’t have enough experience at that level. In the 18-19 season newly relegated Stoke were favourites to win the Championship title as they had served about a decade in the PL, although I think they ended up finishing bottom half.

We and Watford are favourites because we have PL experience, a side that tore up the Championship last time in it, and still have a lot of our talent remaining, Watford have a side with good PL experience, and haven’t lost much talent (yet). Brentford are also popular because of how they’ve done in recent seasons, although they’ve also lost some of last season’s talent. Bournemouth are less popular because although they‘ve got PL experience, they’ve lost quite a lot of last season’s talent.

Although we’re favourites to bounce straight back up I certainly wouldn’t bet on it, as very few teams have bounced straight back up in the past decade and the Championship is very unpredictable. The most I can say at the moment about how I think we’ll do this season though is that I can see us finishing top half, but nothing more (may win playoffs, may get automatic promotion, may be champions)

  15. I have strong beliefs that we will turn it over today. I know we have just suffered from relegation and 12 straight defeats, but I can’t see any relegation hangover on any of our new signings as they didn’t go through it (ok, Dowell did with Wigan but he’s moved now), and I also think they will see it as 1 straight defeat. Zimbo has also been encouraging the squad to focus on promotion, not relegation

Lets not forget we still have a side that tore up the Championship last time we were in it, and now has PL experience. Last season Huddersfield had just got relegated from the PL and got nowhere near bouncing straight back, finishing bottom half. They also have a new manager and the players have only had a few pre season games to adapt to his new style of play

For the score I’d go for a 2-0 victory, Pukki and Dowell. We’ll see

  16. Didn’t know they were suffering from 11 injuries. Could turn out to be a massive blow for them, although I don’t know whether they’re short or long term injuries. Bournemouth have already lost a lot of talent, but in my opinion Watford have the best PL talent out of the 3 of us and with the transfer window not closing until October, I think they’re at high risk of losing more. I won’t be surprised if we lose more talent before the deadline but as we have the least PL experience and no need to sell, I can’t see us losing all our talent

Emi can be exciting and Todd can look good, but there are some other exciting players in the mix.

There is going to be speculation on these two players right up to the deadline in the transfer window, which is not good for them or us. Thankfully its only four league games away, so hopefully all issues will be settled by then, but given what we have brought in, I would prefer to see new players take on the mantle and give us a stronger overall midfield, rather than one that proved a bit powder puff last season.  To my mind, Cantwell and Buendia have to prove themselves all over again in the midst of some excellent looking signings.

There isn't room for all of them and Dowell, Skipp, Sorenson, Mclean, Hernandez, Placheta, Vrancic and Stiepermann (to name a few!) offer plenty.  I'd love to think Emi can reproduce the form of the last championship season and that Cantwell can develop more, but I do think that for them and for us, they both might be better off having a fresh challenge elsewhere.

I know we have a lot of midfielders and the new signings all sound good but they don’t all play in the same position, I wouldn’t say that they all offer plenty now and here are my views on them:

McLean, Vrancic - both have Championship experience and although they can play the no.10 role, I see them both as DMs. Vrancic is also ageing and out of contract next summer, and so I see him as a benchwarmer this season. With McLean signing a new contract and his history with us I see him as a starter

Skipp, Sorensen - See them both as DMs, although have heard that apparently Sorensen can also play as CB. I think Skipp will be a starter as although he only managed to make 11 appearances last season, all as a sub, 2 were in the Champions League and he is here on loan from a major PL club. Sorensen has only ever played Danish football, and so I see starting this season as a benchwarmer, and be given some experience ready to replace Tettey/Vrancic next season

Hernandez, Cantwell, Buendia - See all their main positions as wingers, although they can also play centrally. Hard to say who will be first choice this season, although Hernandez is often used as an impact sub

Placheta - Left winger. With no experience of English football, I see him in the same way as I see Sorensen. With the likelihood of us losing Cantwell/Buendia this summer or even more next summer if we fail to bounce straight back, I think he’s been brought in as backup for them. Might possibly start today though with Buendia suspended

Stiepermann - Brilliant in our promotion season, but was poor last season in the PL and next summer will be 30 and entering the final year of his contract. Although his main position is no.10 he will also play as a LW or LB in an emergency. Think he will be backup this season

Dowell - See him as a no.10 although can also play as a winger. Although he’s still young, he’s from a PL side and our only new midfielder who’s proven in the Championship - did brilliantly on loan last season. Think he will be first choice, and brought in to replace Stieps or possibly Cantwell/Buendia if we lose them. After how he did last season, I also believe he’s likely to be a contender for POTS next summer

I know there isn’t really room for all of our midfielders, but I think that the reason why we’ve brought in so many is because we have high chances of us losing some over the next 12 months, and if we do then we need to have replacements ready. I’m hoping we manage to keep all our best players, as they have PL experience which could out to be a massive boost in our hopes of us bouncing back this season, and if by chance we do manage to bounce straight back it would give us a boost to PL survival next season

You've picked some great ones there! This is probably worth a thread all of its own but going back in history Martin Peters was an incredible bargain and Martin O'Neill virtually dragged us up on his own in the season he arrived. And Holty was a great signing and he was as good a captain as we've ever had.

But I'll stick with Emi. I think you have to accept that he'll get sent off once a season but with the exception of Peters he's still the most gifted player I've seen in a Norwich shirt. I'll be amazed if he's still here on deadline day. He makes us a top 2 team rather than a top 6 team.

The most I really know about Peters is that he scored the other goal in addition Hurst’s hat trick in the 1966 World Cup final, played for us and was a club legend, and sadly has now passed away - it’s just I didn’t exist at any point in his football career, and when my Dad introduced me to City Mike Walker was in his 2nd spell as manager.

I agree with your opinion about accepting Emi is likely to get sent off once a season - Holty was similar. It would be great to still have him on deadline day as just like Holt, although he doesn’t have great discipline, when on pitch I think he does far more good than bad
