I haven't and that's interesting. Makes it seem even less likely.

The fact that the Pinkun are saying maybe but probably not instead of just yes or no makes me think this really has just been put out there to help something else along.

Betis really want to shift him and there could be a potential bargain there - so can see why Norwich would have a look and speak to his agent to see if he is interested. Suspect this story coming out is to get his name out there as the window comes to a close and make other teams worry they might be missing out on something.

Thanks, so how do you think they envisage us working? I can understand a deep lying Gilmour dictating play with two box to box midfielders in front of him when we are on the ball and can control games a bit.

I just don't know how we then deal when we need to defend given that we will face periods under the cosh this season.

The two box-to-box guys will be required to sit deep when under constant pressure, maybe even deeper than Gilmour to protect the defence, and then break forward on attacks, it is a really demanding role though. The Man City game saw McLean and Rupp in line with the central defenders at times.

There have also been hints that Farke wants Norwich to press higher at times this season, so the two box-to-box guys will do that with Gilmour behind if the press is broken. PLM's defensive abilities should not be overlooked - he had one of the highest rates for tackles and interceptions in France last year and is already leading the Norwich squad for those.

Against Bournemouth McLean sat almost as deep as Gilmour throughout the game, it created a sort of lopsided 4-2-3-1, with Rupp on the other side pushing up and Dowell drifting to the centre. The high press in that game created most of the goals, forcing defensive errors.

Basically, it seems that there are loads of different things going on in the midfield. Normann, who is very versatile fits into that well.

Playing style only, and especially what was said by Bethnal about his strength nowadays being his ability to beat a press with his passing from deep.

Bethnal wrote this in the transfer rumour thread:

"Not really sure Carvalho is the player Norwich need. His performances have really slipped over the past few seasons (which is why Betis are pretty desperate to get rid) and he is someone who needs a more mobile, destructive player alongside him. His main strength now is his composure and ability to dictate tempo and play through a press. While he is positionally sound, he is slow and lost all his dynamism from 4/5 years back.

It is an exciting name, but maybe not a suitable fit for Norwich right now."

That sounds exactly like Gilmour - dictating tempo and playing through a press.

Think a lot of people haven't seen Carvalho for a while, he was out for 9 months with a couple of injuries and that seems to have really impacted his ability to cover ground. He gets beaten one on one a lot for a defensive midfielder, but is very good a threading a through ball, and is pretty good at taking a player on himself.

He isn't a bad player, but he certainly isn't a midfield enforcer - but then no one Norwich have been linked to fills that role so suspect they aren't actually looking for that type of player.

Fernandinho still one of the best in the league at DM at 36...

also big fan of Bethnal but his first reaction to Sargent being linked was "noooooooooo" and he's looked pretty sharp so far so I will reserve judgement

He's clearly still a very good player, people are just disappointed with his performances sometimes as he was meant to be one of the best in the world in his position

That's true - I'd watched him a number of times in Germany but he never really stood out and just looked plain bad at times. I did a bit more research after the link really firmed up and have come around to him a bit - hopefully the change of club will help. USMNT fans have said he is a confidence player, and it seems the move has really pepped him up a bit. Hopefully that lasts and he can continue to impress.

I'm really not sure what type of midfielder Norwich want, Noramm and Carvalho are really different types of players - and neither is someone you plonk in front of the defence to sweep stuff up - which Fernandinho is really good at.

A Birmingham rag has been running on all summer about Cantwell despite their chief exec saying they have done their Grealish replacement work now. That and they have kept saying he is in his last year of his contract without mentioning the additional year option until very recently.

Papers sell "stories" not news much of the time these days. Even "news" networks like Fox News. It really is a case of ignore much of the noise.

This is why we are lucky to have the PinkUn. They avoid all the silly transfer clickbait stuff and set out when a rumour isn’t true - they’d almost certainly get more traffic if they just spun along stories about players, even if they knew Norwich weren’t interested.

Today we have the definitive word from the Daily Mail:

What they want: Goalkeeper, midfielder, striker.

Who they like: Christian Walton (Brighton), Matthias Normann (Rostov), Mbaye Niang (Rennes).

Come on, people. One out of three isn't bad. Seriously, the obvious problem  with Normann, if he is their clear first choice for midfield, is that they will carry on so long trying to land him that if the deal falls through, which looks distinctly possible, there will not be time to get in someone else.

Bailey has said that Normann is one of several targets. I’d imagine they are all being worked on at the same time - whether Normann is top priority is a bit of an unknown, it is just the only one that has been leaked to the media. As the clock ticks towards deadline we will see clubs more likely to take on the ‘loan with an option’ deal as it becomes clear there isn’t anyone prepared to offer a permanent deal up front. If we suddenly see loads of rumours spring up, that is when we know Norwich are getting a bit desperate and ringing around every agent to see who is available.

As for the Daily Mail… yeesh, only have to have listened to one of Farke’s last 5 or 6 interviews to know the exact positions Norwich are targeting.

But can we get the right players in such a limited time? Buendia was sold early to give us that time. It's OK to stick to your principles as we did with Ajer, but we haven't signed a similar player for less.

The right players in these positions would give us a great chance and would complete an upgrade from last season. If we fail it  could make Farke's optimism and positivity look misplaced.

Still a bit of time and all reports suggest Norwich are hard at work with a few targets. These things can change very quickly, but whether it is Norwich’s top choice or one lower down the list is unclear. No new players will be in place for the Leicester game, but I think that isn’t a huge surprise.

I'm not sure we have ever really seen that sort of relationship with these two. Usually Farke is very philosophical and if there isn't anything much happening he says so. In fact, he'd put more pressure on Webber by saying very little is happening than he would saying that it is. I didn't see that in this interview.

No doubt they are working on players. It'll be down to the sort of deal we are looking for now - as with Normann.

By stating that Norwich definitely need a couple of players and the exact positions he wants them, Farke is certainly putting some pressure on Webber to get it done.

I’m not sure Farke would be quite so open about it if he was the one in charge of getting those players through the door - you’d probably hear comments more along the lines of ‘good to get someone in to help the group’ etc.

Not quite sure whats in it for us in loaning out Hugill....its not as if he's a youngster and will improve and come back a better player.

We should either have sold him , to a club who gave parachute payments in WBA or kept him as back up. With 9 subs there are bound to be times where another striker would be needed for the bench.

Loaning him out gets us neither the player nor any transfer money for him

I can see 1 holding mid coming in, chances are someone we wouldnt have heard of...and possibly some outs i.e Oxborough,Bushiri,Sitti and if not loan moves ,the cancellation of contracts for Klose and Trybull.

Hernandez non inclusion in last nights squad look onimous too for him.

Save his wages - he'll be one of the highest paid after coming in from a Premier League club and will have got an increase when Norwich were promoted. Club will also get a loan fee and if he goes on to score 15 goals for WBA then his value will increase. With the lack of money in the Championship I doubt there is anyone who would actually want to take him on permanently at the moment.

I'm not sure Normann is making the right noises for me. IF he's reluctant to come on the basis that he doesn't want to drop down a league and already looking for a get out clause, then I would steer clear. We need a lot more commitment than that if we are to break our transfer record on him.

The videos I've seen of him seem to highlight dribbling skills rather than tackling ability. Looks a very good player but not what we are after right now?

When you are in Norwich's situation you have to accept that most of the players are only coming here due to Premier League football and to put themselves on that stage. As Norwich are one of the favourites for relegation it means they will always want to know what that means for them. The last thing a player wants is to come to a club that gets relegated and then makes it difficult for the player to leave if there is top flight interest in them.

I'm sure that Rashica, Sargent, Tzolis etc have all had that conversation with Norwich as Normann will want to - you can see why he would see a loan that ends if the club is relegated is better than being tied to a relegated club.

  11. Main anchor doesn't need to be physical, it is mainly about knowing how to be in the right place at the right time. I don't think many would describe Skipp as a 'physical' player, but he developed to ability to know where to be and when to be there - he wasn't great at this when he first got to Norwich - Farke even mentioned this a couple of times but he soon learnt it.

I think even after Norwich sign a midfielder we will continue to see Gilmour deployed as the deepest of the three and will have two of PLM, Mclean and the new guy either side to do the donkey work. Gilmour does need to work on his positioning and knowing when to stay deep and when to move forward though but that will come.

There are many types of defensive midfielder, Gilmour suits the role as it is the perfect place for someone with his excellent passing to build attacks or maintain possession. Can already see from the early games that Farke is looking at more wing play this year and big switches of the ball from one side to the other will be a big part of this - Gilmour already has one of the highest rates of switch passes in the league - which is impressive consider Norwich saw very little of the ball against Man C.

I am sure I read somewhere that Normann said he wasnt interested in joining Norwich

He is desperate to move and doesn't have many options right now. Think he is just worried about a drop to the Championship should Norwich be relegated, but I would imagine some reassurances from Webber that he wouldn't be refused a move should it happen.

Whether Norwich can resolve the issues with Rostov is probably the biggest issue. I guess they could offer a permanent move, but tie a lot of the fee on survival and performance related stuff.

On this plane thing, our players have been flown in by private JET so far haven't they? Yet Cardiff were willing to trust their record signing to a rickety 2 seated prop plane... I was surprised by that plane choice at the time, I'm even more amazed by it now.

Cardiff claim they offered him tickets for a commercial flight, but Sala choose to take the private plane. There is going to be a court case about it in a month or so - the details will come out then I guess.

    they are squad members..

unless you can guarantee no injuries or loss of form in the players you list - we need them in the squad

There are a lot of players who can play in their positions in the squad now, and Farke has moved to a system with one less attacking midfielder. They are probably not going to get minutes, even in cup games, so best for Norwich to move them along (whether on loan or permanently) to free up their wages and hopefully get a fee.

Can't sign a whole bunch of players without pushing some others out of the door (especially two players who got limited minutes last season in the Championship).

Are Tzolis and Rashica in competition for a place or do we see them both n the team?

Seems like 2 out of Cantwell, Rashica, Dowell and Tzolis if Farke sticks with the 4-3-3 (which I think he will for a while). Will be a fascinating battle for spots, but Tzolis and Rashica together might lack a little bit of nauce that Cantwell and Dowell provide.

A place on the bench for a much changed team in the Cup, would not have been a huge positive step in his career. As has been said, pace is his only asset atm (and in this level, that can be countered by the opposition) , and we cannot wait for him to develop

As much as I love any player who wants to play for us, Argos doesn't possess enough quality to test Prem defenders, to influence games for us.

Harsh to say Placheta has nothing but pace in my view. He isn't completely hopeless and is young enough to improve - a Championship loan and 30+ games would really let us know how his trajectory is looking. Hernandez has peaked and now seems the most logical time to part ways.

Have we seen the end of these for Norwich now?

With Tzolis, Rashica, Sargent, Idah, Cantwell, Dowell all capable of playing these wider roles in a 433 or 4231 etc.

Can definitely see Hernandez getting a move in the next week or so, maybe Placheta will stay around as his pace is a big asset, but sadly his only asset.

Had Placheta not be suffering with COVID he may have made the bench last night, hard to know. I do think both of them need a loan, in Hernandez's case a permanent move would probably be best to be honest.

Bethnal, I take the point, but I was only contrasting it with Rostov, who seem dead set against a loan/obligation/option deal.

Oh yeah, I'd consider it unlikely either team would go for the loan with an option deal. It just seems too risky for any club to let an important player go to Norwich with them only getting the full fee on survival.

Interesting though St Etienne are trying to shift Zaydou Youssouf on loan - and he could also be a good option for Norwich.

  18. 2 minutes ago, PurpleCanary said:

It seems St-Etienne really do need to cut the wage bill. If so they might be more amenable than Rostov are to a loan deal with an option or obligation to buy.

Camara is Puel's favourite at St Etienne so would be pained to sell him, let alone loan him out. As it says, Camara is a relatively low earner at the club so getting him out on loan wouldn't be of great help to them. Think it would have to be a permanent buy or nothing.

Granted, it was 25 years ago when I did French GCSE, but that looks like a price of 5 million Euro - at least according to TransferMarkt, so taken with a Dead Sea-sized pinch of salt....

Would definitely cost more than €5m and hard to see him leave for less than €10m - but he has almost certainly outgrown St Etienne and it was expected he'd leave this summer. The slow market has meant there hasn't been as much interest in him as maybe he and his agent had hoped, which could open a window of opportunity for a Norwich sized club to take advantage.
