The videos I've seen show him to be a dribbling midfielder who gets in the opposition box.

It doesn't feel entirely joined up at the moment and still leaves us without a ball winning midfielder, which Farke says he needs, along with everyone else on this forum.

Farke has never said ball winning midfielder, he has just talked about a defensive midfielder these two things are not necessarily the same.

Gilmour and Skipp are both 'defensive midfielders' but are very different players. It seems the system Norwich are going to use will be the two box-to-box players (McLean and PLM) will be expected to do most of the ball winning. That is what Normann does for Rostov, he wins tackles all over the pitch, and has one of the highest rate of interceptions for any central midfielder in Europe. Whether he can translate that from the Russian league is the issue.

I'm a bit late to the party with this one but can someone tell me what Normann will bring, I thought he was another box-to-box mid and NOT a DM...

    Good analysis here; https://totalfootballanalysis.com/article/mathias-normann-2020-21-scout-report-tactical-analysis-tactics

Basically, he is good at a bit of everything, but isn't a player that will just sit deep and screen a la Skipp. But that never seems to be the profile of player Norwich have been looking for (Billing and Carvalho aren't that player either).

He isn't going to want to move from Europa League Betis to Championship side Fulham, as much as they look set for another promotion

He's dropped to 3rd/4th choice at Betis so is keen to leave, with no firm offers on the table I wouldn't be surprised if he did rock up at Fulham, especially under a former manager he knows well.

Can't see him dropping down to the Chump. Wouldn't help his international career.

He is already out of the Portugal team. He was taken off after an hour against Germany with a pretty awful performance and that looks like it will be his last appearance.

Fulham's manager was Carvalho's at Sporting, so there is an obvious link.

People keep mentioning Sorensen but not one person has picked him to play against Leicester in that thread.

Technically he's a better footballer than all of them but right now we need a Beach Buggy not a Rolls Royce.

Sorenson isn't technically better than Gilmour, not by distance. Sorenson has a good passing range, but Gilmour's is exceptional.

Depends, as was being explained to me on this board by some of the tactically more astute posters. It appears Norwich will play two box to box midfielders alongside Gilmour, who will be expected to share the duties of covering the defensive line between them. Dropping back behind Gilmour sometimes and also providing him with an outlet in attack. (Someone can correct me if I misunderstood this)

So PLM, Kenny, Rupp and whoever we bring in will have a lot of ground to cover. To me this seems like a highly flexible system that may take time to get right, and I'm not going to pretend I'm not concerned but if it works, it could work very very well.

My two concerns are the obvious fear that the BBM will not have the defensive prowess needed for this and that I don't know how we adapt that system should Gilmour get injured or have a crisis of form. Do we have a natural playmaker who can sit that deep outside of him in the squad?

However, as much as I love the game, my understanding of football is always paltry by contrast to many others (and my own knowledge of cricket) so I'm sure someone can correct some of my assumptions here.

That is how I see it, but the Carvalho links have confused things as he certainly cannot play box-to-box. It could be he was someone Norwich looked at a while back and it is just getting leaked now to try and drum up some interest in him.

The only name we really know is live is Mathias Normann, he is very much a box-to-box player and signing him would probably mean Gilmour remains the player maker while a combination of Normann, PLM and McLean do the hard yards. Sorenson and Rupp could step into Gilmour's position if he is injured.

With Fofana out too, who does that leave at centre back? Soyuncu and... Amartey? Benkovic? One of the full backs?

Soyuncu and Amartey are likely to be the centre back pairing - Leicester fans really aren't keen on Amartey and some are saying that Ndidi might get moved there as he has done that before.

Pukki had Soyuncu on toast both times he played him in 19/20, so hopefully he can do that again. Key is to press Leicester high and not give them time to build anything - although that can play into Vardy's hands - it is a tricky balance.

If Palace go down, won't they be in some serious trouble? It's just a perception but that wage bill seems to be growing at one hell of a rate.

They had some head room in their budget after removing a lot of their older players who were on high wages.

They have a 4 wealthy co-owners so they will likely be able to take the financial hit, and have saleable assets in Guehi, Anderson and Zaha so would be alright in the short term.

Their squad still looks thin though, especially in attack - over the first two games they have managed 11 shots in total (Norwich made more against Liverpool alone). If they can get the new players to click they could be okay, but without anymore additions they will need Eze to get back and start firing straight away.

Not sure of the source or the validity of the chap behind this but still, worthy of sharing:

When they said this summer would be interesting... they were bloody right! I mean, even if we don't get Carvalho, the fact that it doesn't sound that unbelievable, considering where we were just two seasons ago... is enough to make me smile to be honest. People are going on about pace, but if he plays as a true DM, it isn't as essential as positioning. Tettey is evidence of that, Makelele and Dechamps were never blessed with huge amounts of pace, neither was Petit.

That report is from here: https://todofichajes.com/el-norwich-avanza-por-william-carvalho/

I think you have to remember when these players were sidelined. Trybull and Klose were deemed not good enough for the Championship and set aside. Hugill and Herandez, while not good enough for us now, had a part to play last season.

Trybull and Klose played in the Premier League, right up the relegation and both played after project restart. They were shunted onto the naughty step in the close season as deemed not good enough. That’s fair enough and I probably agree with that assessment.

What I don’t get is why they were completely frozen out and not allowed to train with either the U23s or first team. That seems to have damaged both the players’ prospects of getting good moves and the clubs chance of getting a decent fee.

I can understand it if they were disruptive characters - but all we’ve ever heard about them is that there were no issues on that front.

Luckily it seems Norwich may have learnt their lesson from this and allowed Hugill and Hernandez keep training with the first team, despite it being pretty clear the club don’t think them good enough for the Prem. (Hernandez can’t make the 9 man subs bench or even the 7 man league cup subs bench for example). Most other clubs at least allow their surplus players to train and players with the U23s so they can put themselves in the shop window a bit.

Erm, Hugill's been here 1 season and now out on loan in the Summer transfer window, so not sure you'd classify him as being "kept on the naughty step".
I think opinion is split on Hernandez, was a storming player for us in the first Championship-winning season, unfortunately injured most of the EPL season, injured last season and kept out by a form player in Cantwell, and now fallen further behind with the new additions. If he can recapture past form he offers something a bit different, but I think his days here are sadly numbered as-is.

I meant Trybull and Klose are on the naughty step - not allowed to train with the first team or U23s.

Every club in the world will have some form of COVID fianncial bill to pay I would have thought and maybe Beria need to lose a player or two to make the accountant happy?

Carvalho is one of Betis' highest paid players and not first choice - they definitely want him gone (and have been trying to shift him for a while now).

Even if there weren't any real dramas I can imagine a player deemed not good enough for the squad having a a clean break from the squad is a positive thing. The coaches can focus more on the players that are. Brutal but it's football.

The issue for me is why was Trybull and Klose treated differently to players like Hugil and Hernandez - those two are also not good enough anymore (or at least as far off it as Trybull is) but they have been kept around the first team and not sent to sit on the naughty step away from everyone else.

You really think so?? I'm asking honestly. Is that just because such big deals take a lot of time and we'd have heard rumblings by now?

I highly doubt those two are going anywhere unless there is a mad offer for either. They are both important first team players and would need replacing - there is almost no time to do that so can't see Norwich sanction a sale.

Only caveat being if there has been something going on quietly for a little while now and Norwich have already lined up a replacement. I'm pretty amazed Aarons is still around, but seems no club has firmed up their interest for him.

Carvalho is quite the name to get fans excited but I'm struck that it doesn't make sense currently given the roster and budget??

Maybe ... Sorensen on loan and Cantwell sold? I think we're in for a wild 5 days before the window ends.

Carvalho would only be a loan so wouldn't require a huge outlay. Too late in the window for Aarons or Cantwell to leave, unless there is a huge offer.

  16. With Vestergard and Evans out their defence isn't looking great.

Still have an excellent squad and will be a very tough game - if it hadn't come after Liverpool and Man City I'm not sure many Norwich fans would be expecting much from it. Need to see an improved performance from Norwich and a bit more cohesion in the attack.
