Whichever way you look at it we're certainly 'going for it' a bit more this season and while I wish we hadn't sold Emi, I prefer this strategy to trying to improve the squad with only loans and freebies.

Even if we go down this season you'd like to believe at least one of Sargent, Tzolis or Rashica will have impressed enough to have increased their value moving forward.

This is what I think too. These are young promising players whose value will only increase. I've digested the Emi sale , but Cantwell has to stay!

Skipp back on a loan would make me happy...

  2. Comparing the PL , "money money money" ERA , with the decades before that is just not right imho.

Only Leicester City have stood up to the top six once and I reckon the league has become far too predictable at the top end.

At the bottom end it's the same I am 99 % certain that one of the promoted clubs will go down , in 1990 that wouldn't have been 99 % ... at least I remember the league was much more competitive.

I appreciate your attempt to be a bit more balanced than some sceptics regarding our self-funding model and its implications for player sales. You're certainly not the first to point out that the sale of Buendia and Cantwell would amount to the sale of our two best performers last time in the PL. But may I point out again that the performance of these two was not remotely good enough to prevent relegation. What clearly cost us most was a lack of quality and strength in depth in key departments. For the transfer fee obtained for Buendia we have recruited Rashica, Lees-Melou, and hopefully Tzolis and Sargent, with some cash left over. Personally I consider that to be exceptionally astute work by Webber that has strengthened the squad considerably. Will I miss those moments of sublime Buendia magic? Absolutely! But do I firmly believe that the aggregated contribution of the four players just mentioned will significantly outweigh those Buendia moments as we pursue PL survival? Absolutely!

Our midfield and defence look considerably stronger than last time round. And who knows whether the obvious rare talents of Rashica and Tzolis will continue to develop in the way Buendia's did under Farke's inspired coaching. Personally I hope Cantwell stays, but if he doesn't I'm confident Webber has targets in mind to strengthen the squad further. Time to consider the NCFC cup half-full and not half-empty I think.

I appreciate your reply too and I can see what you are getting at. We don't know what the future holds . I agree with you on the defence ! Much stronger imo.

I too have confidence in Webber and especially in Farke in getting things done , but I don't believe you can just replace team members who were the back bone of your team. This will always take some time. In the PL you might be sitting at the bottom of the table after 10 matches and losing confidence , because your team hasn't settled yet. I hope this doesn't happen and I have full confidence in Farke to prevent this. I have looked at our signings and I think we might have a few gems there too ... yet they need to get some time to get to know each other and to form a team.

He may be a bit strident but he's just as entitled to his opinion as anyone else who likely hasn't watched any Werder Bremen but is talking about how good they think he can be.

I've mentioned before I do find it frustrating that this sort of opinion is dismissed as 'writing a player off before he's kicked a ball' but if he does turn out to be ****e and someone is critical you then get the old 'well I didn't see you complaining when we signed him!' response.

Personally, from hearing the opinions of people I generally trust, I'm not thrilled by this signing but he'll be given the same chance as everyone else and if Webber rates him then I won't argue.

    This ^^^

I am prepared to give any player a chance . Yet there is no wrong in having an opinion or looking up the player and watching some tape , after which you compare and ponder about what he would add to the squad.

Imho we are now in the PL and this doesn't seem to be a PL quality player.

You simply can't state this as fact. Rashica could outperform Cantwell in the prem this season, for example.

A reaction I anticipated , the word "fact" is maybe not the best choice...but what do you think about my argument about "getting a team to gel" ?

    That takes time!

I honestly think you need to keep the core of the team together and hope for an injury free season to have the best chance.

I hope Rashica does great and I think he's a good addition , but I'm sad we're selling the top players who got us here. And I don't think you can just replace them without having enough time.

  6. In this argument , again , it is obvious that there are now people who just accept the sale of another club favourite for the big money (even one of our own) and set it aside as "that's the way we work". I can understand this to an extent , but I have to include "it makes me feel nervous".

How can you prepare for a PL season , if your team gets it's heart cut out? The loss of two vital players can't be mended just like that , it just can't! Even if we sign so and so (who won't be better  , coz we can't afford better. They MAY become better , but they won't be atm) , it will become a long and hard season. This is not me spreading the doom and gloom , it's facing the facts. The team that got us up has lost two major assets if we lose Emi AND Todd imho . They have proven themselves at PL level , the ones we have brought in mostly haven't. This doesn't mean they can't be good signings but it will take time for the team to gel and that's the problem.

I am very glad we still have Farke here , as he has done a hell of a job and is a good man to have when young lads have to fill big shoes... But the PL , as we saw last time, is not the Championship. You have to hit the ground running and stay up for it. I hope we can land a few good signings and make the best out of it , but losing Emi and Todd , and even Max would make the fight for survival difficult imho.

For me, personally, I think one player going down easily is not as bad as the Italian team systematically cheating to destroy the final 20 minutes of a game. It is just so cynical. I understand game management but that went too far for me.

This I agree with. I had mixed feelings after that winner...as I can't stand the diving and cheating. And imho it was never a pen. But we deserved the win and nobody can deny that.

But the Italians are even worse ! They'll do everything  , which means a lot of cheating , play acting and whining... Against the Belgians it was terrible ... Let's hope we can take the lead against them and make them sweat!

  8. I hope we will win!

But I think a few have been overconfident and it's like we don't even have to play the Danes , we will be in the final... I think we will have to treat this team with a lot of respect and we will have to be focussed. If we are, we will beat Denmark imo.

Italy is another matter... I think the Italians have been the best team at this tournament on the whole. Spain deserved the win yesterday , but these Italians got it done again.

Exactly, and you would have to say that it’s only a matter of time before there’s a significant positive knock on effect on the pitch too. And personally I’m confident we’re going to see that very soon, an improved Norwich City in the Premier League, this time around - just as we saw an even more impressive and stronger Championship title win last season compared to our effort in 18/19 - I expect there to be that parallel. We are definitely moving forward and that’s why I find this self sustainable model very satisfying to watch as it slowly but surely blossoms.

Nice way of putting it , Alex 👌
It does make you feel apprehensive though when you hear about your star players, those that mainly got you there, being sold or rumoured to be signing elsewhere. This is part of the self sustainable model too admittedly ! Yet to stay up , you need players that are good enough, self sustainable or not. I feel we will let ourselves down if we would sell the likes of Cantwell and Aarons too for example , after selling Emi. These are just boots too big to fill atm imho... I mean , a replacement of say 6 m £ wouldn't fit those boots...(usually I have to add).  I know Webber has unearthed a few diamonds and done transfer business that's extraordinary, but you can't expect that to happen 3 times in one window tbh.

I too have seen the positive evolution like you indicate , but a lot had to do with keeping faith in Farke and keeping hold of quite a few players! Losing three mainstays would be quite bitter and a sucker punch imho.

  10. I think Idah will get his chance at the PL . Signing Origi sounded completely bonkers considering we can't afford him ... as we can't afford signing Delaney , Skipp , etc ... which we have to live with.

I think we might see another shrewd signing to cover the striker area . I fully agree with the posters on here saying Pukki needs to be kept on his toes !!! But I'm sure we won't be signing someone of Origi's quality on a permanent deal... I would definitely want Origi at NCFC , but can't even let myself dream about it , as the outcome is 99 % certain.

If he doesn't have a good attitude he won't last long under Farke.  As for being in a relegation scrap, I think it is too early to say that.  If we are near the bottom come March, then yes, but the season hasn't started yet and anything is possible.

I'm sorry Lakey... I've got a lt of respect for your positive attitude , but you know that half the league is looking down iso up from day one. Nothing to do with negative attitude , since the league's got infested with the big money ... most of the clubs outside the top 6 ' first goal was staying out of the relegation scrap and start the season as good as possible. I'm not saying we won't be able to start the season well...but our goal will be survival from day one. staying completely out of trouble will take some doing!

At the moment I am impressed with the signing of Rashica but concerned that this only plugs (we hope) the void left by Buendia with no real improvement yet to our starting xi. After all a Gilmore is also arguably only a swap for Skipp.

so unless we sign a few more players in the rashica mould then we will be going at it again without having really improved the first team. Hopefully the next week or so will allay these fears but at present it’s hard to see much by way of ambition

I understand what you're getting at and how you're feeling , but it won't change a bit imho... This club is self-funding and will never get caught up in the money chucking the PL is all about.

I was shouting about the "lack of ambition" (as you call it) , the last time we were promoted ... But this word is not right , as throwing millions and millions of pounds that you don't have at it is not called ambition ... Becoming "the last of the big spenders" will never be part of Norwich City I think.

I would like a few good signings too and I am convinced we need them , but the players that are good enough very often cost too much for us , so I reckon it's best not to get our hopes up too high... To stand a chance , I do think we need some quality added, but where we'll get it from , with this kind of budget is beyond me tbh. Only Webber etc... know...

Milot Rashica was deemed a player ‘out of our league’.

Could we afford £13mil? No doubt. But would we spend £13mil on a 29 year old? I don’t think so!

Was he ? Well I can't comment on that , as I wasn't aware he was deemed out of our league tbh. But I just don't count on signings like that at all. I know how the board , Webber work and I have come to accept it. Will it ever work in the PL etc... ? We shall see !

This kind of money will never be splashed around much by Norwich City and, like you say, especially not on a player of 29 years old
