Agree with nearly all that, and surely the fact that we have an incompetent government isn't even a debating point any more - it is very clearly evident and well-documented.

The one disagreement I have with the above is that I don't believe the UK (if by UK you mean the Government) is trying to do the right things - I could quote plenty of examples of why but actually test and trace is probably as an good example as any. Right from the start of the process there was an outcry from both public health experts and technical experts that the the Government's plans were totally and fundamentmentally flawed - their technical design of the app was just plain wrong and ultimately they had abandon it as unworkable and start again following the design that countries all around the world had adopted at the start. Secondly they completely ignored the advice from our existing public health professionals that tracing needed to be local and should in fact be based on our local tracing public health systems already in place (as Germany was already doing). Again the government approach failed catastrophically and has now been significanlty modified but only after spending billions with private sector firms who frankly hadn't got a clue what they were doing and for many crucial weeks ran a dysfunctional process which even now in its modified form is still a long way off the performance Johnson promised would be achieved by mid-May.

And let's be clear, none of this is hindsight - there was a great deal of advice available and a great deal of discussion in the UK about these issues at the time but the government ignored it all - in my book that doesn't amount to them trying to do the right things.

Why would you not take an off the shelf app already available from Germany unless you cared more about nationalism than lives and jobs. The crass stupidity of nationalist exceptionalism being prioritised over the benefits of International cooperation. Germany and the UK had local testing and tracing. Germany built on what they had while UK was obsessed with creating their central privatised model from scratch. Pragmatism versus Brexit boy ideology. Competence over incompetence.

Anither classic example Germany invested in expanding its ventilator manufacturers while the UK government ignored theirs and went to a vacuum cleaner manufacturer. The Brexit government is a sad joke.

  2. I liked Boris as a comedy turn and chief bike monitor but as PM he is a sad joke.

I guess if you want the international  community to portray the UK as thick fat and racist he is the ideal  representative as demonstrated by the UK overweight and Brexit vote figures.

Quite why people think the elite will really have their interests at heart is unclear. but to be fair he is a skilled conman. He is not in the same league as Trump but shows similar traits.

Labour needs to bring Momentum under control to be electable a and the Conservatives party needs to be reclaimed by decent reasonable people. I suspect they are just waiting for the Brexit shambles to play out. I doubt the Tory MPs will allow him to survive to the next election if they want to stay in power.

I dont want to get into a fight on this but is your analysis on track and trace or general infection and progression rates based on evidence?

A lot of people are taking comfort from the apparent lull we are currently experiencing.  Sure it might only be temporary given the schools and universities go back soon and the days are only getting shorter  but I would ask you not to kick over the sandcastles they might be building unless it is supported.

I follow the news in both countries and have seen test and trace in action in Germany from back in February. It is sysstematic in Germany run by existing local health professionals

There is a comprehensive testing programmes at the borders. There is comprehensive testing readily and quickly available. There is an app.  There is a map of the country on the main news outlet showing the number of daily cases per municipality with automatic restrictions above a threshold. There is a competent government and functional healthcare system. I am therefore far more comfortable that Germany is picking up and dealing with a greater proportion of cases.

I’m not sure how many deaths you want and how much hit to GDP you want before you believe that the UK has an incompetent government. I’ve always said that I do think UK is trying to do the right things but Germany is doing it quicker and more systematically with people following the rules more backed up by a better education system, a better healthcare system, better infrastructure, a better political system and better leaders.  The UK needs an urgent enquiry and a review and benchmarking of its fundamental structures.  Brexit merely highlights that there is a fundamental problem  with the education and political system. Covid has highlighted how the UK is systematically and fundamentally behind other countries.

No wonder the desperation to hang onto some some lyrics because Britannia doesn’t rule the waves and it is not the land of hope and glory and won’t be until it moves on from the past and fundamentally reforms.

  4. Germany has a lot more comprehensive test and trace system and local monitoring   and restriction system and a decent leader and political system so if anyone thinks UK is anyway on a par they are delusional.

I like Boris as a comedy turn and chief bike monitor but if anyone thinks Brexit is a good idea then they are not intelligent enough to be leader in a crisis and so it has proved.

We've been over the history plenty and no doubt will again,  but in terms of the present I think its entirety fair to say that we are largely on a par with Germany right now and probably better off than most of our peers.

For some on here that's very reassuring.

Sure I understand some people should be very feeling very guilty if they have any decency and are clutching at straws. But it is no reassurance for people who have lost loved ones and work and for those that care about anyone apart from themselves. No rational person should be reassured that the UK is led by an irrational ideological Brexit government with one of the worst health and economic records in the world. They are incompetent to govern the country and need to be replaced.

i watch the News in both countries and there is just no way the track and trace and organisation is on a par. Not unless you think that a non league team and Bayern Munich are on a Par   But I can totally understand that if you are more concerned about the nationalistic government that you supported than people’s lives you could delude yourselves that things are on a par.

  6. If you just ignore one of the worst death rates and economic and the complete shambles of the Brexit government and select a few convenient statistics then the UK is on a par with Germany. But you would have to be a despicable shamelessly apology of a human being to ignore that if.

I'm not left wing and have no problem with a reasonable tory government but any decent honsest reasonable intelligent person must see that this brexit government is completely incompetent and should want them out. Time for decent tories to push for a decent tory government before more lives and jobs are unnecesarrily lost.

And here is that graph (BBC):

The price for a brexit government who prioritises jingoistic nationalism over lives  and jobs is worth paying according to Ricardo and the RWNJs  I still think lives and jobs are more important.

  9. It is all just noise. What matters is why the UK has one of the worst performing governments in the world. The UK needs an emergency coalition government based on ability rather than nationalistic idealoogy because the current PM and government is clearly not competent.

Who could have guessed they would do a thing like that?

    https://www.straitstimes.com/world/europe/high-alert-over-spike-of-coronavirus-infections-in-europe

A tweak in the way European governments count the number of fatalities is also keeping these figures down; mortality statistics now only include those dead within 21 days after they were diagnosed with the virus, thereby excluding the elderly who may have been infected, but who could have died from other natural causes.

I appreciate that you should be feeling guilty for helping facilitate one of the worst performing governments  in the World but your feeble attempts to deflects and deny this are  totally pathetic. I’m not sure how may deaths and economic hits it would take for some people  to admit they helped facilitate an incompetent government. and all the resulting excess deaths and job losses and accept and apologise for their contribution to the abysmal UK performance.

  11. The Norwich Nostradamus needs to get some new tea leaves because they manage to completely misjudge every situation.

Brexittees good to lead the country. Nope worst performance in the world

Sell shares. Nope mine are above pre Covid levels

    Football won’t happen  Nope

Better German performance only temporary  nope

    Racism not an issue   Nope

Climate change not an issue  Nope

And no doubt many others  There really is no fool like an old egotistical fool

Brexit was all about returning sovereignty to the UK, from day one and the British people were smart enough to realise that the European journey was a misguided one. The EU still hasn't accepted the legitimacy of our sovereignty and the Remainers never understood (or didn't want to understand) what sovereignty meant, but most of us did and with crossed fingers we may actually achieve it. Those who have tried to deny us our democratic victory still haven't given up and I suppose even after next year they won't give up, so I'm not yet ready to celebrate our victory but each day that passes brings our goal of freedom that little bit nearer.

Ion has always been understood  that sovereignty is just a euphemism for racism. If it it is not then please provide practical rational evidence for the benefits of so called sovereignty because it has an often cited argument yet strangely no brexiteer has ever been able to back it up with anything meaningful

  13. Some sick individuals think the Brexit govt having one of the worst Covid  death and economic records in the world is a laughing matter like it is something to be proud of.  The Brexiteers have no shame. The one good thing to come out of Covid is that hard right governments have been brutally exposed in events that will be remembered by the electorate for a long time.

Keep digging, massive ****-up by the Bexiteers @Jools and the more you post on the matter the more opportunity it gives us to point this out again. We knew they were liars, we didn't know they were incompetant liars and to what a great degree. Doesn't bode well for the ned of the year.

This government is not fit for purpose.

I disagree. You have to be an incompetent idiot to support Brexit without a plan. This Brexit govt has one of the worst records in the world. Boris and his supporters will go down in history but not for the reasons they want. By sovereignty they actually mean lost in colonial racist past. Shame on the brexiteers and their supporters for all the damage they have done to the people of the UK

  15. A new UK public  health agency based on the German model. A start but will not work alone. Just needs to add an intelligent leader. A modern political system. A decent education system. A functioning healthcare system. A body to fight right wing extremism. A modern infrastructure system. And a reformed economic structure.  Then the UK may not end up having one of the worst health and economic responses to  a pandemic in the world. Quite why people want these people to have more power to kill more people and more jobs is a mystery.

That article explains exponential growth. But it's not just about growth its about who it spreads to.

Germany, France and Spain are all controlling growth less well than the UK but this is not (yet) reflected in deaths as far as we can tell from their official reports.  Maybe this is because they are doing well at protecting the vulnerable?

I expect Germany benefits from more ICU specialists so not just Ventilators but specialists where as UK it was all hands to the deck. A mixture of prudent culture to risk, more effective mix of public and private healthcare and more localised control.

However you look at it UK has one of the worst health and economic responses and that urgently needs to be analysed and addressed rather than ignored denied and deflected from. The UK appears to have fundamental structural problems that need to be addressed.

Merkel explained this very simply and clearly at the start because she was intelligent enough to understand it. Expertise does matter. Instead the UK selected its leadership based on nationalistic jingoism rather than intelligence   You make your choices and you end up with one of the worst death records in the world. Their supporters were repeatedly  warned but stubbornly  insisted they knew better than experts. They don’t and won’t learn while they remain in a state of denial which given the damage they have caused is understandable.

  18. If anyone thinks there are issues in Germany they  should be appalled  by the performance in the UK.   The systems and procedures iGermany had at the start are still way ahead of what the UK has now. Germany has had negligible excess death rwhereas. UK has one of the worst records in the world. People should be disgusted ashamed and embarrassed by the performance of the UK  which has been outperformed by many so called third world countries if they care about lives and jobs. The feeble efforts to distract and divert from the performance of the UK are shameful.

  19. Do you really think people should be banned for being against racism and the loss of lives and jobs? But self imposed ban as a result of being extremely busy dealing with post lockdown pent up demand in my business. No doubt while some businesses are suffering there are some that are booming. In particular I’m picking up additional business due to the restrictions in the UK because of the self inflicted damage the UK from the poor handling of Covid and Brexit. Not what I want for the UK but clearly other have other priorities than jobs and lives.

I fear Germany may be heading for some problems Ricardo. Did you spot T earlier?

VW do you seriously want to make a comparison?  I see the UK and German news daily. The contrast between the competence of Germany and the incompetence of the UK is a shocking contrast. Germany has has progressional test track and trace with clear communication and a plan for dealing with outbreaks since February. The UK still hasn’t. And for some reason one of the worst death records in the world in the UK is deemed acceptable. It is truly bizarre.
