Im not missing the point, I'm just not going to waste my time sieving through lots of comments on people thoughts on the royal family.

    But you have 🤔

If you don't want to read people's rambling opinions then forums possibly are not for you.

60+ or 50+ is fairly indicative of our fanbase, well at least those who bother to go to matches.

Not where I sit and that is in the River End. In fact the average age of the people in my row and the two above and below is probably 30, couple of older fellas in there but not many, much more kids with parents. Granted we don't travel to away games but that really stacks up cost wise when you're the parent paying for the lot.

I had planned to go over and see the father in law to watch the game tonight (who's also miffed RE cancellation and he's in his 70s), but out of 'respect' I will sit at home and do nothing.

  3. I might be wrong, but there is possibly a generational disconnect with the Royal Family. I'm in my 40s and honestly, it's like someone I don't know whos nan has died. I'm sad for the family but I have not emotional attachment in the slightest. I think if you asked the lady herself if she would like normal working people who have arranged events hotel bookings, transport, booked halls/bands etc for parties to continue she'd support it.

It's not happened in most people's lifetime and companies/organisations are scrambling for how to react, and some are overreacting in my view through fear of looking 'disrespectful'. Perhaps the day of the funeral is a different matter which may allow things to be reorganised, but life has to go on. Especially for younger people, I'm so glad the schools have remained open.

I've had a message from a friend who works for the postal service who's had an elderly couple come and kiss the side of his van where the insignia is. I honestly don't get it, but it's clear the Royal family hold some resonance with some people in the UK, and my general feeling is that those people are 60+ in age. That's just my straw poll, don't expect any evidence!

I'll give you what I have though (younger market) https://www.boohoo.com/ vs (older market) https://www.johnlewis.com/

Leaves us a bit thin on the ground for wide men this season with Placheta, Tzolis and Rashica gone and Rowe out for a while. Shame the transfer didn't happen during the English window.

In > Hernandez, Sinani, Cantwell. Haven't got that new car smell but no thinner on the ground than last season.

Idah can also do a job as an inside forward, Ramsey looks good through centre but OK wide too. Arguably we're stronger or as strong in those positions.

  5. Given how disgusting their 'fans' were at CR last season I hope they're set for a good season or two (maybe a decade) of complete disarray, failure, and mid table mediocrity. Unfortunately, given the sums they have forked out they will probably come good at some point but we can all dream.

  6. Sara looked very much like he was in self-protection mode on Saturday, he's obviously still recuperating - I'd be very surprised if he starts over Ramsey, who was excellent.

Although Todd was decent we gave Dabo far too much space to run into down our left on Saturday so there's the conundrum over whether Onel should actually start. They have some half decent players in that area of the pitch in Brownhill/Gudmundsson who cannot be given time on the ball.

  7. To me it looked like they had been given the instruction to only press in our half second half, possibly because of the heat. It looked like Ramsey took the instruction to the letter and I actually watched him begin to close down one of their players only to stop dead on the halfway line. Whatever they'd been told the players either took too literally or it was poorly communicated because we invited the pressure on ourselves in that period. That then began the wobbles and poor passes, the crowd turning was a weird one.

That said, and with the subs that we brought on, conserving energy in that opening period meant we did go at them for the final 15 whent hey had nothing left and could have easily had a couple more if Hernandez and Hugill were a little more clinical.

I'd take their right back and the lad Gyokeres. Two decent players in an average team. Hamer pretty anonymous and at fault for one of the goals - I know he's had admirers on here.

  8. 20 year old kid isn't capable of carrying mediocre midfield in world's most competitive league shocker.

Yes, he was out of his depth for us. He was asked to do too much in the role he was given and he was never going to be our saviour. Aside from Normann's super-human efforts in a couple of games we had no one remotely capable last year. I'm afraid to say Nunez may well have also looked equally shell shocked dropped into that shizshow. Neither manager had a better option either - who was going to play instead of him? Gibbs? Let's shoot his confidence in the same way shall we.

The Pirlo comparisons are obviously way off the mark and all the press superlatives clearly did not help manage expectations. 10m seems a fair price for a still unknown quantity. Hope he does well.

I’m not looking for an argument here, but that’s about odds, not profit, although they are obviously related. There’s a reason why odds change if someone lumps a big stake on, and it’s not because the result has become more likely. A quick search showed me pretty much every site talking about margin or “Vig” - the difference between income from losing bets and cash outflow from winning ones. In other words, why bookies odds on a coin toss wouldn’t be 2/1 on each outcome.

Quite. The data informs the probability and therefore the odds that the betting company know will return a profit.

I'm also not interested in a protracted argument but there are a number of ill informed posts knocking the use of data. Bookies were just a relatable use of probability - a more established use might be insurance risk calculations, or the weather forecast.

Same as all data though, if the source data is poor then the prediction will be poor, which might/or might not be the case with the OP. As with most data based modelling it only improves over time.

I’m sure data helps refine their model but isn’t the basic business model to ensure that the potential payout of a winning bet is covered by the equivalent losing stakes? So if one person bets on Leicester to win the league at 5000/1, as long as they’ve had £50,001 bet on other teams, they’re in profit?

    https://www.onlinebetting.org.uk/betting-guides/how-do-bookmakers-set-odds-and-make-money.html

"Bookmakers and odds traders calculate the real probabilities of something happening based on statistics, form, history and ultimately human opinion (their own opinions, other bookies opinions and public opinion). The more data that is available the more likely the bookmaker odds are going to reflect the real probability, if the event has never happened before or there is less data on the outcomes then bookmakers will be more cautious and their odds will be lower than the real probability. For example, football odds, on the whole, tend to be good value as there is a lot of data available. However, odds on say the winner of X-factor are far less certain and so will have higher margins built in, therefore overall worse value for the punter."

  11. It feels very much like Hull. We'll have all of the play and more chances, but they are going to catch us with long balls and direct play. If we take our chances, as we have been doing in the last couple of league matches, we'll win comfortably.

As above, I think Kenny will need the support/protection of someone more robust than Dowell or Cantwell down the left side so Hernandez should start.

From whoscored.com on Sunderland's game against Stoke - them losing possession and giving away freekicks around the box sounds ideal for us with Nunez now integrated in the middle, and actually being able to execute at a dead ball situation (what a buy!)

  12. TBH, I wouldn't have wanted to take my kids aged under 2 - in fact I can imagine it being a nightmare - but some parents/guardians might not have alternative care arrangements and could otherwise not attend.

There are many adults whose social and emotional intelligence is way below those of a 2 year old who are still allowed to get in and it's those people that are the problem.

Wonder what the profits of utility companies will be?

This is the issue. The companies we directly pay our bills to are not necessarily the ones making the huge profits, this is happening back in the supply line where they are making all sorts of hay. It's why the price cap doesn't work. It is absolutely criminal and genuinely makes me feel sick that we're essentially, and pardon the pun, but powerless.

There are small public protests building like https://dontpay.uk/ I wish we had the togetherness that the French have in these situations.

    https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/grant-shapps-vows-to-create-new-death-by-dangerous-cycling-law/ar-AA10m470

I have no problem at all with reckless cyclists being held to account for any injuries (including death) that they cause by illegal behaviour. However, shouldn't  we also have a law that equally punishes reckless pedestrian behaviour? In a lifetime of cycling I have never run into a pedestrian on a footpath, I have, however, been knocked off my bike twice by pedestrians walking into the road without looking.

Just for balance, the Daily Mail carried this article yesterday https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/speeding-drug-driver-25-who-killed-a-newly-married-cyclist-is-jailed-for-just-21-months/ar-AA10lP27?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=5b1d154e572f412b9c98456fb6a06aad showing that drivers still get away with paltry sentences when injuring and killing cyclists. Given the number of people injured and killed by reckless cyclists compared to the number of cyclists injured and killed by reckless drivers, perhaps Shapps might be better advised on where his priorities should lie. I wouldn't want him to be accused of trying to distract from his current failures by gaslighting the current popularity for demonising cyclists.

    100%

I drive, ridden a motorcycle and currently cycle 3 days a week (I can walk too!). Part of my route includes the inner ring road where I use a short section of path rather than have to negotiate 3 lanes of traffic including HGVs doing between 30/60mph, changing lanes and generally being unpredictable, to turn right. I regularly have people mutter under their breath at me 'should be on the road', I can only hear them as I've stopped to allow them to pass before I continue. As you say, there has been a demonisation of cyclists that is in the most part totally unjustified. Actually the government sanctioned the use of paths for cyclists if the road was unsafe https://road.cc/content/news/108119-transport-minister-responsible-cyclists-can-ride-pavement

'Why dont they use the cycle paths' - I cycle through Mousehold which has a cycle path, but only for around 200m, it's in a fairly flat 20mph section and usually has people walking dogs on it, with headphones on and totally unaware of their surroundings. Either side of the cycle path are the two steep inclines where it would actually be useful to get off the road, but of course, there is nothing and cars are frustratedly following someone at 5mph.

Driving a car is necessary for some journeys, but electric bikes/scooters are the most sensible and accessible transport for the future and the infrastructure is not there to support it as an option. They have had Riverside Road closed for the best part of a year and done nothing to make it safer for cyclists or scooters, in fact whatever they have attempted at the station is a crash waiting to happen.

  15. Have to admit, on the day Gibson was taking the flack for thier goal, rightly in regards to the loose pass. But on reflection and having seen the replay, Omabamidele needed to have MacLean in his sights over his right shoulder. He got sucked into the ball. I've no doubt he will be our best centre half, but that's a bit of inexperience showing. Not sure if Krul let's him know either. AO could have at least made it difficult rather than clean through.

This team really looks like it will gel and all the good loans look very impressive.

Pretty sure everyone who played today is a fully paid contracted player. The only loans we have are Hayden and Ramsey neither played.

Not sure how you can watch that game and attribute any blame to Dean Smith. First 20 minutes we bossed it, Gibson (selected out of necessity) gifts a goal, heads go down and sucked the air out of us. He made positive changes which worked. The final 20 minutes Wigan barely even got out of their own half. The players he has bought in (assuming he was involved) look like upgrades.

What exactly are we blaming Dean Smith for?

  17. Arguably for the last couple of seasons it has been the negligible contribution of goals from anyone other than Teemu that is the issue. Since Todd had his decent PL season we've not had a regular goalscorer other than Teemu. Mark Teemu out of the game, cut off his supply, and we literally have nothing going on. It's been a problem for a while. I thought that Rashica may become that guy, and didn't see Todd's collapse in form coming, I doubt anyone at the club did either.

When Idah got a bit of form going last season he looked very handy and a threat as a physical no.10. With him dropping off and picking the ball up, Rashica running off the full back and Teemu on the shoulder of the CB we had options. The players are there. We will eventually need a new no.9 but Teemu is not the problem.

I'll flip it and give you my most disappointing - Mark Billingham's Thorne series of books are really good but the TV adaption was terrible. Billingham himself picked David Morrissey to play the lead, I have to say he is one actor I take an instant and irrational dislike to, which probably didn't help!

Best is Frost though. David Jason is a god among men, if only he could play defensive midfield.

Just a tengental addendum to this - Apparently David Morrissey lives locally and is often spotted around Diss. How big is he and do you reckon he reads the forum?
