Not sure West Ham is the best role model for success in the Premier League.

Huge amounts of money spent, very little progress in the way of moving up the Premier League.

A stadium heavily subsidised by tax-payers money, that the fans hate.

Watched them a few times this season as well. Dire, outdated football but their team is full of big, pacy players and they're good on set pieces so they get by. Not a club whose model we should be following.

They do have a couple of quality players but that's down to being a big club based in London with a lot of money, it's not down to their owners competence in running their club, why exactly does she feel entitled to give us advice? Our owners get far more out of our club than she does hers.

Next up Big Sam weighs in on why our 'tiki taka' game will never succeed in the best league in the world...

Cover for Aarons is an absolute priority for me. Imagine he gets injured in September: what happens? We have to play for four months with either Godfrey (not a right back and needed at centre back), Heise (not a right back and not even first choice in his main position)  or Hernandez as wing back (not his main position, he can't defend, and we'd have to play an entirely different formation).

There is no way any of the above situations are preferable to not signing a specialist right back to cover Aarons- even if it's a cheap option who is not quite Premier League standard.

We have a ridiculously small budget for next season by Premier League standards and any player good enough to step into our first team is going to likely eat up a lot of that. I personally wouldn't waste any money on a squad player. A teenager with potential? Sure. But I can't see any cheap, backup brought in being remotely close to PL level, the Max Aarons getting injured in September scenario would be equally as disastrous whether we had Ben Godfrey or a mediocre Championship player as cover, no matter what our survival chances would take a sharp downturn. An option I perhaps didn't consider is a loan from a top club, like Passlack, but again a player like this wouldn't come close to replicating what Aarons does for us.

So yeah, I'll add that to my wishlist as well, because that scenario does worry me, it could even be Passlack himself if he's happy to potentially not play again for a year, but I seriously doubt we'd sign a senior player as cover because we might has well have just kept Pinto in that case.

You don't think we need cover for Max?..... surprising.

I would say that would fall under the bracket of young, unproven players. I was mainly talking about first team additions I'd like to see. I don't like the practice of signing backup or cover for a club like ours who don't have money to spare. Any purchase should either be a first teamer or one for the future. If Max Aarons is fit next season he will start, any senior right back we bring in who's happy to potentially sit on the bench or play u23's all year will 99% likely not be good enough for us in the PL, I don't think we really want or need a right sided james Husband.

Pretty sure Godfrey and maybe Heise could play there if we were desperate, Hernandez could too in a back 5 formantion, or if we sign a young player as cover he could as well. To be honest with ourcurrent attractive position I'd like to see a lot of our squad made up of these types of players. I know they're hard to find but I trust our recruitment team to find us a few more gems. We'll need them when our current young stars inevitably depart

  4. For me a young GK, a defensive midfielder, might be unrealistic but could we attract Peter etebo from Stoke? He's pure class and would fit us perfectly. A young winger on loan, maybe someone like Harry Wilson to compete with Hernandez and a forward who's good in the air to give us another option. Aside from that I would be looking at more Maddison or Buendia type gambles, all it takes is for one to pay off and it'll be worth it, really don't think we need much for the first team

  5. In terms of his values and philosophy he is the perfect manager for us. Like Howe at Bournemouth he's exactly the right fit here. Hell of an appointment really, he wasn't hired for his record or experience but because Webber knew he was the right man for the job. Really hope we can hang onto them both for a while!

  6. I really don't think the central defenders are the reason we've conceded so many goals. The problem has been in midfield imo. A DM in the vein of Tettey in his prime and a Leitner alongside him to control possession and our goals against would dry up pretty fast.

  7. Watching Match Of The Day it looks like most bottom 14 teams in that league play kick and rush football with teams full of 6ft plus athletes and one or two superstar 30m+ attackers who are devastating on the counter attack. I was watching West Ham v Spurs the other day and West ham looked just as agricultural as when under Allardyce. Aside from Bournemouth and Leicester they all seem to play the same way. Camp in their own half all game and run/dribble to ball on the counter, very little short or square passing, any quality passes are longer, there's a huge emphasis on set pieces, crosses and individual strikes from range.

Seriously, watch some PL football coming up, not featuring the big teams. They all play like Allardyce teams but with one or two superb, pacy, attackers with excellent dribbling skills to create all their chances that mask how basic and negative their playing styles are.

What worries me is I can see us playing most teams off the park next year, only to consistently get done on the counter or from a corner against the run of play. Many repeats of the Stoke home game basically. That's the most gutting and frustrating way to get beaten imo. I don't mind getting outplayed. Being suckerpunched is hard to take. I hope my worries are unfounded!

  8. The fact he's a slight cut below our other superstar youngsters means we'll probably keep him here for many years. As much as we love watching Lewis/Aarons/Godfrey/Buendia they aren't going to stick around too long, they're just too good, too valuable and will all play regularly for top 6 clubs.

Cantwell is more than good enough for us and won't be on the radar of bigger clubs, I'm hoping he's our long term Wes replacement. He's already a decent championship player and there looks to be a lot of growth to come as he occasionally shows flashes of real quality. He could eventually develop into PL quality player provided he keeps working and Farke sticks around long enough to coach him into one.

Saying that though, I think the best choice would be to loan him back to the Championship next year. He needs to be playing every week and he would be behind in the pecking order here. I'm sure with the reputation our young players have plenty of Championship clubs would happily take him for a year and he's good enough to play every week for plenty of teams in that league.

  9. I'd be happy with anyone but Boro or Villa. The others would struggle in the PL. Pulis's Middlesbrough playing in the PL would be a crime against nature, Villa would probably do okay. Leeds would collapse into themselves under the weight of their own expectation and choke. They're also only good for 60 minutes in patches, PL teams would work them out pretty quickly.

WBA remind me too much of us in 2015, a good squad borderline between the PL and Championship on the slow downslope under an inexperienced manager, Derby are a less clinical and much less hard working version of us full of loan players so you'd imagine they'd finish well below us, Bristol are a tidy championship side that would get annihilated in that league.

It's gonna be fun to watch. If it came down to Villa v Boro I'd be cheering on Villa but it's nice to be in this position. I remember in 2011 I was desperate for Reading to beat Swansea because I was sure Swansea would be good in the league above, they were but it turned out it didn't matter in the end. Same will be true this time as well I'm sure but it would be nice to have some cannon fodder up there. Won't be Sheff Utd imo like us I think they'll be pretty comfortable.

  10. The lineup in that Wednesday defeat was Ruddy, Martin, Klose, Pinto, Djikes, Tettey, Howson, Murphy, Hoolahan, Naismith and Jerome.

Ruddy can be excluded as a GK, Martin despite losing his ability still cared deeply, Wes was the same as always, Jerome's commitment could never be questioned. Klose, Pinto and Tettey have been kept on by Farke and Webber which says they prob wern't the problem. Naismith is supposedly a model pro, Webber and Farke wanted to keep Howson and Murphy was an academy product who had a great season that year.

You've got to wonder what the hell was going on at the time to cause these problems and who were the troublemakers? It's not like the team was full of mercenaries or bad eggs. Sadly we'll never find out but I'd love to know what was going on behind the scenes.

Could it have just been poor leadership throughout the club? In both of those interviews Jerome and Martin point the finger squarely at the players. I wonder if the issue wasn't so much culture as having a squad that had suffered too many failures and had lost that edge and hunger.

Really weird time for the club, would have been fascinating to see a Sunderland style BTS documentary.

  11. It said last summer. So sales at the start of this season. I'm guessing Naismith because he has friends in the media, has been around so would think he knows it all and was very suddenly shipped out to clubs paying little towards his wages and has barely been mentioned. Might not be, but looking at the other departures I can't see anyone obvious, Watkins maybe, but I know so little about him I can't speculate. Oliveira's issue was workrate and wanting to be the main man in a system and culture that's all about hard work and the team as a collective. If he was talking about Farke in the media last season he wouldn't have played, it would have been jerome and then Srbeny all year regardless of form, farke wouldn't have it.

  12. Also lambert doesn't care about us, or Ipswich really. He's an arrogant get and there's no way in hell he'll stand for his team throwing a game because it would reflect so poorly on him and he'd struggle to get another club at this level. He's gone there to try to rebuild his reputation, throwing a game would end his career forever.

I expect Leeds to beat them by a few, but not by anywhere near enough to overhaul us.

Even with all this they still have to beat Villa which is a tall order at the moment. If they had Bolton then scum I would be a little nervous but in reality we are already promoted. It's about winning the title now. In this era, winning the title isn't a joke anymore, this is a tough league to win and it would be brilliant to see us lift a trophy for all our hard work this year.

  13. -----------Krul

    Aarons Zimmermann Klose Lewis

    -------Godfrey Vrancic

    Buendia Stiepermann Hernandez

    ------------Pukki

I'm not one of those who thinks that Godfrey is primarily a DM because Paul Hurst and whoever managed him at York played him there but given our options I think it's the smartest move to push him higher. We need a DM, Klose has some minutes in the tank and is experienced enough to slot in seamlessly. Tettey always takes a game or two to get up to speed, so does Leitner and Thompson has been out too long.

Vranic has to start as well. McLean hasn't been poor but it would so unfair if after his impact he didn't get one.

  14. Whenever I watch Leeds they don;t create many clear cut chances and their play is always so predictable that goalkeepers know exactly where to position themselves to save. Every chance seems to be a cutback to in or around the edge of the box coming in at pace. It takes a decent amount of skill to put those away and as they produce that passage of play so often it becomes predictable to defend against. They do it at such a pace and high tempo it always troubles teams in this league but these seem to be hard chances to bury.

Even in the highlights it's not like they're missing open goals or the keepers are often pulling off world class saves. They are extremely well coached to produce the passes of play they do but I Championship level forwards are going to struggle to consistently finish these types of chances. It probably shows up well in the stats and things like xG but watching live their problem is blindingly obvious to me and it's not poor finishing.

  15. We keep seeing him linked for around 10 million which is obviously nowhere near enough and it also states in the recent article that we're desperate for him to sign a new contract.

I reckon he has a release clause of around that amount currently because otherwise that price is ridiculous. I'm hoping for a new contract announcement soon to easy my fears. He will go and pretty soon i reckon but we really should be getting 15-20 mil for him, that's not with yellow and green specs on that's what he's worth. As an all round footballer he has everything. He will play for a top club soon without a doubt.

  16. Nearly, but for me:

    --------Henderson

    Aarons Basham Jansson Lewis

    Buendia Hernandez Norwood

    ---Pukki Sharp Adams

Grealish hasn't played enough to be in the team of the year and Buendia has done more over the season than him, I think his all round game is better as well. Randolph plays for the most defensive team in the league so has the easiest job and I think Henderson has had a better season in a more open team, much of their good defensive record is down to him making super saves.

Adams has scored in a much poorer team than Abraham, he also scores better, more individual goals. not much in this but I'd just lean towards Adams.

You have to have one of Sheff Utd's  CB's in there as well. Jansson has impressed me but has Cooper really been that exceptional this year? Not really, no better than Zimmermann from my vantage point.

Basically too much Leeds and Villa, not enough Sheff Utd or Norwich. I will happily admit Bielsa has worked an absolute miracle with that squad though, but I wouldn't have many of them in my team of the season.

  17. Yeah the Forest one for me too. It's turned out to be a vital point, it felt as good as anything else this year and Forest were a complete sh!th0u5e of a team moulded totally in Karanka's image. Was so unbelievably satisfying.

Running that very close are Millwall, Pukki's third v scum, Vrancic's opener v Leeds and Vrancic's equaliser recently, some of our passsages of play this season have been absolute top class as well. In any other season any one of them would have stood out on top easily.

This has been the best season I've seen following City, I've only been supporting since 2000 but with the ride we've had since then that takes some doing, to beat 2011 especially.

Best football, most goals, a core of young players leading the way, most likeable group of players, most last second goals, it's the most professionally we've ever been run, Ipswich finally dying, Leeds bottling again etc Just pure perfection. Even a comfy mid table finish next year with some famous wins would struggle to top the pure joy this season has brought.

  18. We can't afford to get significant upgrades on what we have so we don't need to spend much. We need different options. It would be touch and go whether we stay up with the squad as it is but we wouldn't be far off. I reckon without any additions we could get 32-38 ish points even accounting for poor refs and some bad luck. A couple of quality young players on loan in attacking positions. Another Tettey type player which never costs a fortune, a young backup gk and a physical forward good with his head and I think we're set. That should be covered by 20 million easy.

Obviously Buendia is a real feather in the cap for the recruitment guys and from what Webber has revealed, it looks as though a data analyst guy highlighted the fact that his statistics looked a little unusual for a player in a team who struggled against relegation and on the back of that he was scouted and eventually purchased.

However, I'd be interested to know how many of the Germans were a result of the scouting team or simply Farke's knowledge of the leagues over there and his previous connections. I would've expected at least the Dortmund-linked players were Farke's decision; Zimmermann, Leitner and Stiepermann?

Whoever had the initial idea that Pukki was worth looking at deserves a medal too.

Pukki was Farke's idea as well. The best signing from Webber/the scouts was Buendia

  20. Probably best to avoid Yarmuff on any day of the week in my experience.

Best thing about Leeds fans is they think everyone wants to beat them because they're the biggest club in the world, when in reality it's because so many of their fans are total be11ends and it's funny to watch them suffer. Hope they make it to the play off finals and lose on penalties.

Kind of ironic that people are laying into our defence on this thread and slaughtering Chris Hughton on another thread.

I imagine that this season could go on the way it has from now until the end of time and some people wouldn't realise that THE WAY WE PLAY means we're going to score more and concede more than your average team.

The way we play should mean we conceded less than your average team, we're just not playing the correct way at the moment, we score a lot of goals because of our quality players who have been well coached into a cohesive unit, we're not usually exactly gung ho. I wouldn't even describe our usual playing style as attack oriented. These last few games though we have thrown the kitchen sink at it trying to break down well drilled teams camping in their box. The correct approach would have been to pass them to death and try to nick the odd goal. Farke looks frustrated so I'm guessing this isn't the intention. The players are just trying to force it too much. When we go back to playing our usual way and if we tighten up on set pieces we won't let that many in, even in the PL imo,

Also, people were laying into Hughton because he was at the extreme end of that spectrum and had no plan off attack bar give it to snodgrass to fall over with. Defensive football? fine. That dross? No thank you.

  22. If we could just tighten up from set pieces and concentrate for the last minute before half time it wouldn't be so bad. We're decent enough at keeping the ball out in open play in most circumstance. This has got to be what Farke works on over the summer, just drilling set piece organisation into them and making sure we play till the whistle.

We're conceding too much again the moment because our play up top has become too rushed so we're getting hit on the turnover too often with fullbacks pushed too high. I don't think the issue lies in individual defenders or the intended playing style.

We're at our best being extremely patient in possession, not giving the ball away and looking for low risk attacks. Only breaking quickly when on the counter. At the moment we're attacking like we did in the first few games of this and last season. Where the ball bounced around like a pinball between players too close together not making runs, no one looking after the ball and holding off defenders before moving it

Not even Man City can play at that speed so i don't know why we're trying it. I don't think its an instruction, I think the players are just too desperate to score at the moment. Cooler heads are needed.
