Do it on a large enough scale on three or four isolated islands, it could not only be an effective accommodation solution but would be a very strong deterrent.

How many do you want to hold on isolated islands?

75000 asylum seekers applied year ending September 2023

If only half of them, that's 4 facilities of nearly 10000. That's a decades long project, but the UK ideally needs to sort this out in a few years.

    I don't see it working

  2. My main objection to using a UK island, or somewhere like Ascension island is that I can't see how it will be effective

There's tens of thousands waiting to be processed

No way we can build and staff a facility to house them all, so it is unlikely to be a deterrent and it will still cost millions to house the rest in hotels, b&b etc

I guess you thought wrong. Easy mistake to make though without the stories of catastrophe at the borders matching up to the hype.

Er, I guess you should've read the article you posted!

"This will mean significantly extra red tape. In particular, an expensive veterinary certificate will be legally required with consignments of fresh food and plant imports from the EU. These are a requirement from 00:01 GMT on Wednesday, but will not be subject to actual checks at the border for another three months."

New red tape at the moment, which should help the inflation rate, full on checks in April.

    Herman is correct.

Paperwork needed now, checks later. I think there is a 3rd phase even later

Personally, I don't think that there will be long delays. If queues build up, they'll probably ignore the checks and let everything through!

New border checks came into effect today; reports of widely-predicted border chaos are conspicuous in their absence.

I don't think that the border checks actually start until 30th April?

  5. Silver medal for England in the handball prediction league 😊

I  couldn't watch a whole game, but the last 5 minutes of close games were worth a look.

France beat Denmark in the final in overtime. If they had won in normal time, I'd have been top..

Even maritime borders with the likes of Turkey and even the US!

When the sea freezes over, it's possible to walk from Russia to The USA. They're only 2.5 miles apart at the neighbouring Diomede Islands

Ukraine is not fighting because we've encouraged it to; it's because Russia invaded it. It's in our interests to support Ukraine, because if Russia annexes Ukraine then Russia then has a direct border with NATO, where there's a severe risk of Russia taking that on and causing a direct war between Russia and NATO. But that doesn't make it a proxy war. If not, seeing as Iran, North Korea, and China are supporting Russia's war effort with hardware (their hardware is making Russia's winter missile and drone campaign possible), why not say Russia and Ukraine is actually a proxy war between China, Iran, North Korea, against NATO?

Yes, and this is why we must not give Ukraine membership of NATO. If we do then we are committed to defend them if attacked and then the conflict escalates into the next world war.

Russia already has several borders with NATO

"They will then be able to vote by proxy, with one proxy voter able to vote on behalf of as many as four overseas voters.

The Electoral Commission raised concerns in response to an earlier consultation in 2016 that voters “might be tempted to choose a marginal seat they had once lived in rather than a safe seat even if it had not been the last address they lived at before leaving”.

Concerns were also raised about the difficulty of checking information and the potential for fraud. The Association of Electoral Administrators noted it would be challenging to enforce penalties for supplying false information or falsely attesting to applications from people overseas."

Yes - And the Tories were pushing ID and worried about electoral fraud. This looks like an open goal by comparison!

"The expansion means they will be able to register in the constituency of the last address at which they were resident if they are able to provide relevant documentation, or failing that, through local records or on the word of an eligible British resident."

I understand that scrapping the 15 year rule was part of the conservative manifesto, but registration on the basis of "on the word of an eligible British resident" is pushing it a bit!

Personally, I'm undecided whether to vote in the Sevenoaks constituency at the next election, as I will have been gone for over 6 years.

Perhaps there should be special overseas constituencies for British immigrants to other countries instead of based on the last address

Caught snippets as I seem to get a lot of Faroe Islands-related stuff in my Facebook feed. They put up a hell of a scrap, really. Slovenia beat them by 3, Poland by 4, and they drew with Norway.

Apparently there were over 5,000 Faroese in Berlin urging their team on in the Norway match. Considering the total population of the islands is just over 50,000 then basically ten per cent of the whole damn population was giving it some serious hammer in there.

The remarkable thing about the Faroese team is that you can probably argue that if they've got a national sport, it's rowing! But they don't half produce some good quality athletes/sportspeople considering such a small population size.

I had heard that the Faroese had 5,000 supporters with them. That's an amazing turnout. I  think there are a few thousand over from Iceland too. After Montenegro won earlier, Iceland is guaranteed a place in the next group stage

  10. I suspect I know the answer to this,  but anyway.....

Anyone watching or interested in the current European championship currently being played in Germany?

I'm not a huge fan myself, but it is getting a lot of coverage here

Iceland drew their first game after being 2 goals down with about 30 seconds left. Faroe islands did something similar against Norway. I think this might be their first "big" international tournament, so there is a fair few of them out there.

Being discussed on R5 now. Are you OK?

    All good thanks

Other than the poor bloke who fell in a crack last week, nobody has been hurt

The question now is to ensure that the residents get the support they need

    • Thanks 1

  12. It´s happened again!20240114_093221.thumb.jpg.5f3d33a9f1a6ab35c3371197586760bf.jpg

One small fissure has opened up inside the defences that were built, and has claimed it´s first house. The lava outside the defences has largely been kept at bay so far. We will have to wait and see how much damage is caused.

Everyone that was still in the town were evacuated early this morning

Last Wednesday, one poor soul, who was working on filling in one of the cracks that formed late last year, disappeared. It is thought that somehow the crack opened up and he fell 20 metres plus into the ground. They looked for 2 days but there was no sign of him. It was a really difficult search as the crack was very narrow at the top, and also rocks would fall in
