1.
it was the board who made the decisionthe fans have been against him for somewhile, mountains of letters etche was on his way out, but the turning point was the manner of the defeat and what caused itie there was no way back for Hughton

ps boards take very little notice of fans over such situations, they look at the bottom line
Certainly the board would have been concerned about the financial position some years back but now that situation has been successfully addressed, I think it unfair and wrong to suggest that their decisions are motivated purely for monetary reasons.

Were that the case, the major shareholders (joint) would have sold out at the end of last season when Premier league status and all its associated income, was guaranteed. Their asset is now worth only a fraction of what it was then and unless a miracle escape is achieved, will soon be worth even less.

No, your bottom line theory doesn''t stack up for me.

  2.
Part of the healing process has to be the inners like Morty and LDC to accept they got it spectacularly wrong.

Only from truth will come healing.

So I call on all the inners to search your conscious and accept the situation. Learn from your error and let''s all move on
Your interest is clearly not in Norwich City, more in screaming "I was right, you were wrong" at the top of your voice. Should have left that childishness behind years ago.

  3. Any relegation in these circumstances would in no way damage the reputation of whoever manages the last five games (especially when the opposition is considered). I think any relegation will always be firmly attached entirely to Chris Hughton and McNally.

So any appointment could have been for the immediate impact over these next five games, yes, but with a view to continuing in the future also.

Had that been the case, we would not be saddling somebody with the task who has absolutely zero experience of managing/coaching in this league or at this level. I just can''t see anything in Neil''s playing or post playing career that will command respect from the team. The decision to unload Chris Hughton was a reluctant one which was obviously delayed for too long and the new appointment is on the back of a panic attack. As has been said by many, the whole thing draws so many parallels with historic behaviour, Gunn being the stand-out example.

For me, Hughton did what he thought was best and would never have resigned. The real villain in what''s happened is McNally and the rest of the board.

But we are where we are and can do little but back the team in the hope that a near miracle can emerge in the coming weeks.

  4. McNally has finally decided the time is right for a change (what''s happened to the old "outside the bottom three" criteria by the way?). Given that the club has decided to use the tried and tested "appointment from inside" route, the need for a leader from within the playing group is likely to be our only glimmer of hope.

From everything we have seen so far, that person is neither of the two individuals carrying the captains titles at present. We need one of the team that has peer respect, to rally the players in the coming week and to be inspirational on the field on Saturday. That is a tall order given the level of individual performance of late but I seem to recall that not only did we asset strip Leeds of their key players but also, two or three of their incumbent captains.

I guess McNally left himself with no time to bring in one of the people he told us he would always be aware of as a managerial appointment.

Let''s hope that somehow they can drum up some spirit from somewhere.

Give the bloke the captains armband.

He is the CLUB CAPTAIN, Bassong the team captain!
Whats your point?
Don''t think he''s got one.

  6. I am certainly not one of the McNally critics, one of those who have become signed up members in the past couple of weeks. Generally, his actions have been good and his talk has made sound sense also.

However, I bet he is really peed-off with himself for the "envy of world football" comment. Yes, he needs to speak and be visible at times like this but patronising talk such as this will have the opposite effect. He needs to get the support behind the club, all this will have done is alienated fans.

  7. A few words of sanity from Middle East Mark. amidst calls for a change at the most inappropriate time imaginable.

With the seasons most vital must-win and winnable games immediately before us, to make a panic appointment of somebody who would need time to assess his staff and impose his style, makes no sense. We would be into the final four games before any pluses would come through.

What we should have done earlier and indeed, what we do in the close season are a different matter. But for now, we have a single option, to stop the sniping and get behind the current set-up.

  8. For more or less 50% of the Premiership clubs, the line between success (avoiding relegation) and failure (finishing in bottom three), is very narrow. And for those that finish the right side of that line, it will have been down to a range of factors. Obviously, the quality of the playing staff is key but is not something that varies within the run-in. Two factors that do vary are team confidence and luck. Luck can go for or against you in all sorts of ways, incidents in games, injuries etc. But you can''t influence luck, you take what you get. Confidence however, is in the hands of the management but how the hell can a manager be expected to lift and motivate his players when he personally is being subjected to the vitriol of the likes of some of the so-called supporters of the club.

Hughton lives near me and on Sunday morning at around 11.50, I saw him in the local supermarket getting a few food provisions. He looked pretty shattered following events of the previous day and I just wondered to myself how he would be able to firstly pick himself up and then lift the team. All this at a time when a growing minority are glorying in every bit of failure.

With supporters like some of these on here, who needs enemies.

  9. Couldn''t agree more about the Gunn analogy. Adams has not much more relevant experience than Gunn had and if you recall, there were plenty of hard-core supporters thinking what a great choice Gunny was.

I am not saying a change should not have been made at one of the appropriate times in October or December/January but I certainly feel that now is too late. We must stick with what we have, get behind them and pray for the best part of a miracle.

  10. Don''t expect too much from a local paper sports journalist or a national paper one for that matter. They will normally have reasonable written English but no football background whatsoever. They are unlikely to have played amateur football at any level and have no idea about what goes on in team environments. They equip themselves with a few topical clichés and learn what situation to use them. Example in today''s EDP - we can''t say he had a decent game, he put in a good shift. Guess he''ll miss next week game, he''s on nights.

  11. I have some sympathy with the view that a change would have been beneficial ahead of the last window but to advocate a change right now makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Obviously, anybody appointed as a panic reaction would have to work with what we have got - no new faces. He (or she, how pc is that?) would need to learn the players at his disposal and then try to get them playing the game as he wants. All this would be happening in the period of matches which we think are winnable. Maybe the effects of the changes would start to come through in time for the Chelsea Liverpool etc. games.

I suffer the same frustration others do but for now we can only sit it out and hope.

  12.
As per usual, when the chips are down a new scapegoat is appointed to take the brunt of the abuse.Last month it was Snoddy and/or Johnson, now we''re moving onto Bassong...We can''t lay the blame for all that''s wrong at the foot of a single player, but his form this season HAS been patchy at best (and certainly not as strong as last year), and I''d probably agree that it''s time for a change (even if it''s just a match or two). The problem as GJP rightly points out is that we don''t really have a top class replacement available. Bennett arguably makes MORE mistakes than Bassong does (even if the potential is there), Turner isn''t fit and playing Martin at CB with Whittaker going to RB is a risk in itself.I''d probably give a game or two to Bennett however, as he may perform better alongside the calming influence of Yobo and if nothing else it gives Bassong a rest and chance to realise that he CAN be dropped.
13.
Wouldn''t have been my choice for captain but nobody in the starting 11 looks a better bet.

    Yobo becoming a little overrated.
GJP You say nobody in the starting line-up looks a better bet than Bassong for the armband. Is this is a typo - nobody should read anybody, surely?

Ref. your thread from earlier in the week (Team for Stoke) in which you argued that Bassong is not the liability people make him out to be. After Spurs, Villa and now today, what does he need do to convince you that he is a walking disaster?

And will Hughton get the message also.

  14. I think two places Hart and Foster are certs. and that the third spot will be between the Norwich keeper and the ex Norwich keeper.

If reports are correct, Hodgson courted Foster to get him to return to the international fold, was re-buffed and then went to him again. The second time, he so kindly agreed to be selected again. The guy in the earlier post had it right as far as Hodgson is concerned when talking of his insistence that Terry could not return. He is preferring to take Smalling. Says it all.

  15. I note that without exception, everyone is going for Bassong to remain in place. Obviously, if nobody else is available, so it must be but if Bennett is back, surely Bassong is a massive liability that we could manage without. It is not as if his truly awful errors at Villa were a one-off bad day, look how he froze on the ball against Spurs. Ruddy will not always bale him out as he did twice that day.
