To me this window was the start of a greater transfer plan, the majority of which will happen in summer. In this sense I don't think it was bad at all.

It definitely wasn’t bad, however I’d agree it didn’t scream play-off push.

It was sensible, pragmatic and started the transition that’s needed though. If we’d got Varane as well there would be very little to complain about.

I’m just surprised there wasn’t a loan. I thought Knapper might have had a youngster in mind who could make a difference in the run in.

I think Webber gave us quite a bit more insight but each to their own. The placid corporate talk is probably the right move anyway, we learnt that fans only want the actual truth when it suits. That's not a criticism, it's fine. Of course, if he does a bad job these same interviews will be ripped apart in 12 months time, even the amount of times he says "umm" will be called into question!

The only thing he mentioned directly really was the youth academy and that's easy because every Sporting Director would say the same thing. Webber backed that up in his time here, let's see if Knapper does.

I think we will have to disagree on “the actual truth”, it always felt very much the truth according to Webber to me.

I don’t know, there’s not much really going on but I thought it was interesting enough.

One thing about the youth element I thought interesting was him basically assessing the squad he inherited as bloated but Wagner was worried about bodies in interviews during the window. He’s definitely backing Wagner right now but I think it’s possible there’s some tension there in terms of academy progress.

I also thought it interesting he said the club needed to get back being focussed on player development and in terms of player trading, and set up to do that. Perhaps more had been lost behind the scenes than one window focusing on older players.

20 minutes of saying absolutely nothing but I think it's what the fans generally want after Webber. Say nothing risky, don't push any boundaries, use a few typical corporate soundbites. So it comes across professional enough to at least 75% of the fanbase. It's probably the right call but we learnt nothing.

He said the job of a sporting director is to stay calm and think logically. Brutal destruction of his predecessor.

To be honest other than the absolute clangers Webber used to regularly drop I’m not sure how much more insight he ever gave.

Regardless it’s only been a few months, we are mid season as well so his job was just to reassure right now, was never going to be that interesting to be honest.

You're an intelligent poster, so i'll only assume you're purposefully pretending not to know the differences here, for whatever reason.

I would assume that as Own The Pitch are a partnership the club would have access to competition data and would be able to "reasonably assume" based on the winner and their details / even being involved in the winning hand-over process, the risk of them being Ipswich fans, which of course is naturally minimised anyway, because it isn't specifically for the Ipswich match.

When a competition is ran for the specific fixture we're talking about where the away end and home end will 100% sell out, and with Ipswich being local rivals, it's of course more likely to attract interest from those down the road. Of course it might not do, but the club have a duty of care and certainly in there eyes a reputation with their biggest sponsors and partners to keep. Having a couple Ipswich fans hilariously win the raffle, cause a scene all without the club being aware of who these people are until it's invariably too late would be embarrassing.

From what I can see this isn't a case of your "club can do no wrong" as I'm not really seeing many people agree with you.

Who wants to get involved lol.

I’m sure he won’t mind me saying he’s being his overly combative self, but he does have a point. I’m amazed at the people choosing to ignore it/dismiss it simply because some people want to beat the club up at every opportunity.

The club could have offered to work on an alternative solution. I’m amazed they didn’t, as that’s just objectively good PR.

Irreplaceable. I hope we keep him for a proper promotion push next season. I fear we might struggle, though.

    Easily our best player personally.

He wasn’t ready for what he was bought for but we are reaping the rewards of that mistake now.

There’s a real shortage of genuine number 9s, he’ll be worth a small fortune if we are forced to sell.

Would this be a good thread to mention that Michael and Delia were spot on when they recognised how massive the loss of Sainz, Sargent and Barnes was earlier this season..

It was massive, you (and we) missed Gunn as well. But it wasn’t enough justification for getting just 7pts over an 11 game period, that was the crux.

  7. I think the thing with Barnes is he was brilliant with Sargent at the start of the season. He was brilliant yesterday when he came on. However he hasn’t looked the same player on his own or with a different partner and I think many people’s assessment that he wasn’t justifying his place was probably fair. However that was never his fault.

VHD looks more of a Sargent like option than Hwang or Idah ever were, but it’s too early to tell. The scalpel surgery done on the squad to improve the options up top does make sense though to me. Wagner used the three perfectly yesterday, Barnes changed the game and VHD showed even in his brief Cameo that he offers similar pace, strength and presence to Sarge.

  8. Great report as always Ricardo. I agree with Sargent MoM. Rowe, Sainz and Sara are all talents but there’s something talismanic about Sargent. I genuinely fear the day he moves on more than any other current player.

Several good performances yesterday, Sainz for his goal and being a constant threat, McLean for his consistency in driving the team forward, Gunn for making crucial saves, Sargent for scoring and lasting 90 minutes and finally Barnes for reminding us why he was bought. On the flip side Fassnacht was anonymous and offers very little, Giannoulis should never start ahead of McCallum and Sara is currently a shadow of the player we know he is.

Agree there were some great individual performances yesterday from the guys you’ve picked out. Barnes literally changed the game.

I disagree on Fassnacht personally. In that first half he was getting in some really good positions, playing more freely he was coming central to link play and at one point popped up on the other side with Sainz. He faded in the second half though. He’s an enigma, there’s a talented and experienced pro there, but he’s definitely not a winger and we aren’t getting the most out of him.

If we end up getting promoted this season I think I shall spend the whole summer laughing my head off.

Well, until the PL fixtures come out and we're starting with Man C (a), Liverpool (h), Arsenal (a), Chelsea (h)

I we go up and Ipswich don't that will be utterly hilarious

Indeed, it’s highly unlikely but it would absolutely unforgettable.

Wagner sacked in the Wembley dressing room after winning the play-off final. "Sorry, David, but we made the decision in February. Thanks for all your work"

    You heard it here first.

Let’s be fair, I really like David as a person but I don’t think anyone’s misgivings are really unfounded. I still struggle to see where he takes us long term.

Today was great though, still dicey far too many times, but this is the Wagner football we were promised when he joined, today was both effective and entertaining. Players were committed and passionate. It was a far cry from some earlier performances.

I worry though we are far too reliant on Sargent, when he went down heavy in the first 15 and was struggling for a bit I was fearing the worst. He really is our talisman right now, hopefully Sydney can help lighten the load.
