  1. I will also be sad to see Clingan go as he was the true ''Player of the Season'' last year, but I also see that it is realistic that he only has a year left on his contract. I also hope that OTJ will be similarly secure in the holding role whilst perhaps being more creative going forward. Time will tell, but if the 650k can be used to bring in other players like Lee or similar, then I think it makes sense.

On another side, does anyone know whether the Spurs youngsters are still around on trial? I thought they showed promise and filled some gaps in the City youngsters coming up from the Youth Team. Any news?

  2. I think that it''s likely we''ll see an attacking 4-3-3 formation a lot this season, with 3 strikers, 2 CM and Hoolahan as playmaker behind the strikers. This worked well in Scotland but will depend on the FBs getting forward as WBs to give width.

    Theo

Semmy - Doc - Nelson or Askou - Drury (or Lappin as WB)

Tudur Jones - Hoolahan - Gill (or Pattison)

Whaley (or Bridges) - Maric - McDonald (or Cureton)

Obviously, I''m assuming Clingan has moved on. If need be, this 4-3-3 could be transformed into a 4-4-2 by Hoolahan moving up on the left.

  3. I still think Lee could do a good job for City, but if it was just him against both Maric and Bridges I would have to go for the latter as we need 2 biggish strikers.

My preference, though, would be Lee and the better of the 2 otherscome judgment day. Askou as well if he continues to perform like yesterday!

I would also sign McVeigh for his versatility in being able to play as striker, either wing, or in the hole behind the strikers.

I don''t know enough about Neilson, but he seems to have done well and he will be needed if Whaley decides against signing.

A lot will depend on what happens with Clingan and Russell.

  4. Gunn. Pardew would be another ''carousel'' type manager who would come in, change most of the players at great expence, and then move on when another offer came in.

Gunn is doing a great job of recruiting players, bringing in triallists who can be properly assessed before they are signed (or not), and developing youth players and bringing in promising youth traillists. Pardew would be looking at short-term bolt on players in the manner of Grant and Roeder - no thanks, we''ve had enough of that!

  5. WBA play him as an attacking CM, but Mowbray''s description is interesting:

"Graham only gets into our squad because of his talent,” said Mowbray. “He shows it on the training ground."

“He’s outstanding on the pitch with his ability to manipulate the ball, create and play clever disguised passes."

“His best position is coming in from the left-hand side with his right foot and playing clever passes and shooting, taking the full-back out, but I played him in a more central role which I know he can do."

Sounds a little bit like Huckerby to me ("coming in from the left-hand side with his right foot and playing clever passes and shooting, taking the full-back out").

Maybe WBA are paying his wages so that he can get his playing time up?

  6. For those who are working and can''t keep flipping back and forth, here''s Lakey''s Half-time update:

Triallist Goran Maric ended a flowing Norwich City move to give them a half-time lead on 26 minutes.

Maric had been on just nine minutes having replaced Cody McDonald who went off injured. It wasn''t immediately clear what McDonald''s problem was but it didn''t appear serious.

City keeper Declan Rudd pulled off three good saves but the visitors improved as the first half went on and were well on top by half-time.

Wes Hoolahan set up the goal for Maric and was running the show for the Canaries who could have improved their lead when Michael Bridges shot just wide and Chris Martin had a shot well saved.

    Sounds good to me! OTBC!

  7. I wonder how many of these reforms, board changes and new methods of operating would have happened if it wasn''t for relegation.

I''m impressed with McNally so far and the working relationship he has with Gunn and his emphasis on putting football first.

Gunn haas surprised me with his proactive early signings which have all been well thought out, IMO. His strategy of bringing in triallists of all ages and organising an intensive pre-season schedule so that they all get playing time and match fitness is very clever. This seems to have laid the potential for a very good squad both now and in the future. Proper development at last!

All this leaves me looking forward to the new season! OTBC!

  8. If he continues playing well and earns his place, I''d like to see it for his goal scoring potential and versatility (Striker, either wing or playing behind the strikers). He''s scored 2 class goals already and if he can continue performing well I''d like to see him in.

  9. I would agree with that Butterbean.

I really like what Gunn & Co are doing with early signings to allow the team to gel. I also like bringing triallists in so they can be judged properly on their play, how they fit into the squad, and what their attitude is like.

At the moment City have around 18 senior players (including Clingan & Russell at the moment) and 9 youngsters on contract. If  Clingan & Russell do leave it''s a squad of 25. There are also 5 senior triallists (Maric, Bridges, McVeigh, Neilson, & Craig) and 4 young triallists (Powell, Mtandari, Chrysanthou & Joarder). This looks like a reasonable basis for a good sized squad in place for the new season without huge outlay. City could even end up sending players out on loan rather than bringing them in!
