  1. Though his main position is DM, Amadou can also play at CB, which gives us that flexibity, like Godfrey being also capable of playing DM. If a CB is caught out of position, Amadou can drop back to cover (as Tettey has done on occasions). To add to that, Amadou is also capable of playing as a box to box CM, which suggests that we have a ball playing DM, who can also make long diagonal passes to attacking players in good positions. This seems to be the kind of movement and flexibility DF wants to establish throughout the squad.

  2. French report that Amadou has signed:

    @ManuLonjon
"C’est bien signé ! Ibrahim Amadou ( FC Séville) est prêté avec OA à Norwich ! Officialisation dans la matinée."

    Translated from French:
It's well signed! Ibrahim Amadou (Sevilla FC) is on loan with OA in Norwich! Formalization in the morning.

Believe this journo broke the initial story.

    Spanish press running it too:

The officiality of Amadou, shortly #SevillaFC Y #NorwichCity sealed the early morning deal -> One million per assignment and 9.5 purchase option

  3. We've not spent that much, but we've added four top quality players from top level teams. Heise is also like another new player and we have quality and depth throughout the squad. If, as looks likely now, we add Amadou and Rhodes we'll have had an excellent window. I'd compare us more to Bournemouth and hopefully we'll not only survive, but push on as well.

  4. Vital Norwich has a further update on Amadou here:

    https://norwich.vitalfootball.co.uk...defensive-midfielder-after-agreement-reached/

The original source said that the option to buy next season would only happen if we stay up. This seems to be similar to the Fährmann deal where we pay all the wages and a loan fee, except for the buy option next year. If that does happen I'd think he would become the permanent replacement for Tettey next season.

Edit: Apologies as I've just seen that Alex Moss posted this link above.

  5. Progress on Amadou from Sevilla apparently:

    https://www.estadiodeportivo.com/sevilla/2019/08/05/detalles-cesion-amadou/237003.html

Suggests we've agreed to pay his €3m/yr wages, a loan fee, and the deal might include a purchase option. Ironing out the details. Suspect Norwich want to only have to buy if we stay up and he contributes, whilst Sevilla want something more concrete. This has the sound of SW being out there negotiating a deal, much like he did with Buendia.

That salary would be £53 k p/w, which sounds very high for us, but maybe that is less so after our recent new contracts for players.

  6. 14th for me. Solid squad kept intact from last season and four quality players signed from top level clubs to increase the quality and depth. Heise could be considered a fifth and Idah is this year's talent emerging from the Academy. We'll take some beatings but we'll also produce some shocks and get enough points to survive comfortably.

  7. Why are people so obsessed with the amounts spent? Sheffield United signed McBurnie for an inflated amount while we signed Drmic on a free transfer. The former finished behind Pukki in the Championship and has 7 full caps for Scotland and the latter has 32 caps for Switzerland including two this summer and five years of playing in the Bundesliga. At 26 Drmic is just coming into his prime while McBurnie is 23. He's a good signing, but is he better than either Pukki or Drmic?

  8. The spending includes both fees and wages for new players and the other areas. We have good squad depth with existing players who know each others play and four quality additions from top level teams (5 with Heise who's like a new player) who arrived early and have already settled well. The fact that we didn't spend much on fees doesn't mean they're not top players. The exceptional togetherness and hunger for success in the PL wilpull us through.

  9. It could be Srbeny has shifted to a AM/second striker role with Rhodes in mind or it could be just to get fitness minutes. I think it's the former and thus the cheeky bid. As Dan says above, three top level strikers in the PL is a huge advantage. When Pukki was injured last season Rhodes came in and scored 3 goals in 3 games and kept our run going. Drmic has the advantage of being able to play WL or WR as well, so our attacking options are increased. Unlikely, but we could even end up with 4 strikers on the pitch when chasing a game!

  10. Thompson's current injury is a hamstring, which can happen to any player so he shouldn't be out much longer. The news on Tettey is good, but he will probably miss the first few matches as well. SW has to decide whether to sign another DM using our last homegrown slot, or ride out the injuries and keep it available for January. Whoever we might sign now isn't going to be integrated into our style of playing from the off, so it could be a big gamble. Not an easy one for SW.

I think we have the players (yes Tettey, Trybull etc ) but it's mostly we are a bit too gung ho. If we ignore 1 off bloopers we get caught out on the break (our poor corners I tend to dread as these always often lead to fast counter attacks) because we are over committed to attack. It gets even worse when we end up chasing a game as yesterday.

So we need a little more discipline and caution in attack and yes a Tettey figure holding back.

Agree with this. We get far too gung go at times, especially when we go behind. To survive in the PL, we need to be able to quickly fall back into two ranks of four after losing the ball. Too often key players get caught up the pitch and we're then exposed. I'm sure DF is aware of this, but he needs to drill it into the players. Pukki does a good job harassing defenders and he needs another linking player helping, but the others should be back in defence quickly.

This needn't cut down on our attacking abilities, which will more often be Pukki, Buendia and Hernandez breaking quickly out of defence with a linking player like Leitner, Vrancic or McLean passing to whoever is best placed to carry it forward.

If Farke was considering three at the back, he would have tried it during pre-season.

    Nuff said.

He has used it several times, even when we only had two CB's available, switching Lewis to CB and bringing in Heise at LB. Even when playing a back four, Lewis often shifts into a CB position when the opposition have the ball and Aarons is still up the pitch. DF is more flexible than most people think.

I still quite like idea of the wildcard that is Semi Ajayi as an option in the DM role. At least we could afford him - and though his footballing ability is still under debate, his sheer physical presence is undoubtable.

Ajayi has signed for West Brom, so no longer an option. Bielik is still an option from Arsenal, also being able to play at CB or DM, as he did last season for Charlton. It just could be that Arsenal wanted to keep him through the pre-season before releasing him on loan.

  14. I'm beginning to doubt that we will sign another DM. So, if we don't recruit another DM or DM/CB option, what alternatives does DF have? One is to play 3 at the back in a 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1. The obvious choice is Klose-Hanley-Godfrey, but DF might also opt for Lewis-Klose-Godfrey to cope with Liverpool's pace and trickery up front, with Heise coming in at WB. He used the latter in the German pre-season games when Klose wasn't available and it worked quite well. Even when we're using a 4-2-3-1, Lewis often drops back to be a third CB when the ball is lost, then moves back to LB when we have the ball. The advantage is the pace and mobility Lewis and Godfrey have to deal with pacy attackers. It also gives us the mobility all over the pitch that LDC was talking about, in that Godfrey and/or Lewis can move forward when we have the ball then drop back when we don't. Another option is to use McLean alongside Trybull to strengthen the cover.

Exactly right! Also I think we dominated teams so comprehensively last season that we didn't bother enough about conceding daft goals. I think we'll have a different attitude in the PL.

The way we've played against PL teams in the cup games gives me hope that we can raise our level against the top teams. It won't always work but we're only targeting 38-40 points to survive. If we play like we can and the new players add to that, we should get enough points.
