I can see two good teams out of the first and second choices at each position (not always easy to choose). I have McVeigh as back up to Whaley and Smith after that. I have even managed a good reserve team almost totally out of young contracted players (thus a third team out of the present squad). Obviously senior players will need to play in the reserves for fitness etc., but this is the deepest squad I can remember in the last 40 or so years.
Gunn, the 2 Ians, Deehan and McNally have done a great job to make this happen, and let''s just hope they can now make it happen on the pitch!

There are still some questionmarks that can only be answered once at least 4 league matches have been played, but that shouldn''t inhibit a natural feeling of optimism! [;)] -
My compliments as well CUSDP! Spot on yet again! -
I love the way the 10th and 11th permanent players are signed at last and immediately everybody says who''s next!
I guess we''re all born to be greedy! [:D]

MichaelJBailey covered the match for the Pinkun on Twitter:
"Lovely bloke, Mr Samba. The goal will help his cause. He''s asked 4a quick decision from BG
A fleeting appearance but certainly not out of place from what I saw. Well done the boy."
I wonder if we''ll see more of him?

|It is 4-1 now. Tyree Clarke (great name!). -
AndyJR - don''t refresh the Twitter site as it jumbles it. Put it on your favourites and go back to favorites to refresh. -
Excellent news - now what about Maric? [;)] -
Found this on the 606 website drawn from Mike Bailey''s running commentary on the match for the pink''un:
"Outrageous touch from Holt. He''s clearly not all muscle. Stopped the ball with one foot, took it past the defender with his other. Not the first time he''s shown quick feet either."
"Tudur Jones breaking up play well as City press. Personally, I think the City midfield looks in good shape this season. TJ and Gill doing well."
"Nelson header from Gill''s corner just floats over the bar. Good stuff so far from City, at both ends of the pitch."
"Whaley tracks back and wins City a goal kick off Moses. Quick lad, Simon...Whaley in space and drives one inches wide from the right, thought it might creep in. Wes had made a superb run in behind him too...superb link-up play from Wes and Whaley."
"Martin sends Wes clear with a superb ball, but the attack breaks down. City definitely winning the midfield battle."
"Hasn''t had a save to make yet, Theo. But he certainly inspires confidence from the way he carries himself."
"Very impressed with Spillane, the kind of player who can play anywhere, and he looks good at RB too. Got forward well, just made the wrong decisiion a couple of times."
"Based on the first half, Premier League in three seasons. Possibly."
"We''re certainly getting the ball forward quickly, but we''re also breaking quickly along the floor. A bit of a mix - they''l still play the ball around, don''t worry about that."
"Lee and Spillane go up for the ball, the right back wins and clears."
"Goal disallowed for City. Gill''s corner going straight in, but a foul called on Speroni."
"Holt sets up Whaley who steams in and scores a goal Croft could only dream of. Fully deserved on the balance to play too."
"Bright shot, blocked, over the bar. City corner."
"Nelson''s injury from a 50/50 - looked like whiplash."
"Lee''s gone off, accompanied by stick from the home fans."
"I thought that was a superb performance from City, thoroughly deserved."
"Holt surprised me with his quality on the ball, he snatched at his only chance. The goal was excellently taken by Whaley, not bad for 110 minutes of preseason football."
"City''s last win over Palace at Selhurst Park came in a 1-0 victory on the last day of the 1995-96 season."
"(On Gill & OTJ) Very good, the pair of them. Hughes will have to impress, Adeyemi came on and looked settled again. For me, the midfield is strong."
A good performance that inspires confidence, it would seem. -
Well said in both comments Branston! This carping about players on the cheap is getting tedious! -
I think a comparison between this squad and that which won the Championship would show similarities. The challenge would be to come up with the same commitment and consistency through the whole season. In recent years too often there has been a collection of individual players rather than a team.
The lack of loanees, good competition for places, and good tactics could all make a difference this year. Having Holt (and hopefully Maric) for the whole season could make all the difference as well. I think this squad will have a chance in League 1. If promotion did happen, it would also provide the basis for a Championship team. Cureton and Dejan would probably have moved on by then and there will be a bigger budget for new players, the young players will be a season older and I would be reasonably optimistic if quality players were then brought in to fill the gaps.

At least if Maric doesn''t sign there is a Plan B. Anybody wanting to see a collection of Bright''s goals can see the video on the site below:

Looks useful, but Youtube goal videos always do. How good was the opposition? On the other hand, he shouldn''t cost much and would provide another option! -
YES.
I see a few entrenched positions here. Personally, I think that Gunn has achieved a good balance in the 10 new players and produced the strongest squad he and McNally could have done with the budget available. If Maric and Askou come in as well, I think there could be a chance of automatic promotion but at this stage it is all about what might happen rather than what will happen.

I seem to recall that Gunn said Holt will get more playing time tonight. He certainly sounds a City type of player to me! OTBC! -
He did say scores 5 goals and City gets promoted. I''ll settle for that! -
And the intro to Canaries World has Martin Taylor scoring his goal against the binners - bang up-to-date! -
I doubt that Gunn would have gone to his top limit on wages straight away. He seems to me to have a good feel for this, perhaps strengthened by McNally''s business acumen, so I think a second offer may have been made and is being considered by Maric and his agent. Not a done deal yet! -
This and the RB situation are the burning issues remaining. Gunn can''t look for another striker until the Maric situation is resolved but given his successes in getting new players in I think he''ll sort it one way or another. -
I think Gunn will bring him on as sub when possible like he did with cody last year. Playing box to box is a big ask for any player and therefore a natural for the ''fresh pair of legs'' treatment which Adeyemi would be perfect for. -
I would like to see him signed. I haven''t seen him, but he seems to have Calum Davenport''s calm competence and ability to win nearly everything in the air to me. I don''t think that 4 CBs competing to be in the side would be a bad thing at all! -
Interesting discussion, but not much further forward. My instinct is that Maric or his agent has come back with ''no to that offer, but if you raise it the answer could be yes'' (or words to that effect). Given his success on getting players in, I''m willing to trust Gunny on this one. It may even be that Bright is a means of moving Maric on.
With Holt on board, this is less of an issue and I suspect that Gunn has further irons in the fire if the Maric answer is ''no''.

Brilliant news! -
I suspect that it was either Whaley or Adomah but can''t afford both. Whaley is the more finished product at 24 (Adomah is 21 and still a raw talent), both are primarily RM but can play elsewhere, and both have blistering pace. If it is only one, then I think Gunn is right to go for Whaley. -
It''s always good to have a definite now and again amidst all the rumours, Pete. Thanks for that and the press conference updates on Pinkun Twitter. [:D]

It''s all about potential at the moment, which looks very good to me and I''m feeling optimistic. I also feel that the pre-season has been well organised and well managed. The quality of play has been improving throughout, but Wigan will be a real test.
I think the first four matches will give the first indication of where City will finish. I certainly feel a top six finish is within reach, and if consistency of performance can be achieved (as it has been so far in the pre-season) then I think we will be competing for a top 2 finish. Here''s hoping anyway! OTBC! [B]
