  1. You used the ''L'' word! no more loans please, especially in defence. Besides, we need to re-jig our defensive pairing - we''ve conceded far too many goals over the last few seasons with doc and shacks. I still don''t think they''re good enough together. Well, maybe they''re good enough to be a league one pairing.

On a brighter note, now that we''ve dropped a league - maybe our recruitment policies will change. We might see hungry young''uns like Cody give it a real good crack. This would definitely make a change from seeing dozens of not-quite-good-enough-for-the-premiership players trying to use our club as a springboard for their ailing premiership careers. Most of the players we''ve taken on board, be it loan or otherwise, have dropped down a league to grace our lovely turf - I''d be quite keen to see a reversal in this trend and see players who are on their way up in the game.

Also, I really believe we must consolidate the spine of or team. That is, the goalie, to centre halves, two centre midfielders and two strikers. We must own these players. We need a core that is given time to gel, to understand each other''s thinking. Watching us play on Monday, it seemed that we lacked the cohesion we needed to take the game to Charlton.

The core of the team is undoubtedly going to change over the summer. Clingan will go, Marshall might well go, Shacks is technically a Wolves player again now and the identity of our strike force is, apart from Cody, largely undecided. Some clever maneuvering in the transfer window is required.

I just hope that the scouting team did their research before the season ended and know who they''re going for.

  2. Isn''t it a bit obvious that, if Lee doesn''t come to us in the summer, it won''t be because he wasn''t happy with the pay packet. He''s come out and said he''d play for us in League 1! The obvious link between League 1 and lower wages isn''t a complicated one after all - Lee will have considered this and not seen it as a problem before making that statement

If it falls through it would be because of the failure of negotiations between the clubs, much like the Taylor saga of last season.

  3. we scored more goals than birmingham this season. our problem clearly isnt scoring goals - its conceding them. The whole back 4 needs to be reconsidered. i still dont think doherty and shackell is a good enough partnership. its the partnership that has seen us fall right the way through the league. two solid full backs would be appreciated too. and we MUST OWN our back 4.

  4. i think moving for lee gives us an insight into gunn''s thinking....i mean, he''s lost two first choice midfielders, but brought in a striker. to me this indicates that our strikeforce will be changed - but by keeping gow in centre/attacking mid we can still utilise his creativity, so hopefully that chemistry shouldn''t be affected too much. i think carney should be given a start now - he''s got a lot to prove, to his parent club and to his country, so i think he''ll be up for a good scrap. plus i think he adds a little more protection down our left flank than hooly would have.

  5. whatever happens, i really dont think we should be trying to take shackell back. it didn''t exactly cause an outrage when he left - we can do better. we need to do better. the shackell doherty partnership simply isn''t good enough to take us into the top half of the table. we need to buy at least one solid, honest centre half in his 20''s who has the hunger and passion that we all demand. accepting the doherty shackell partnership as sufficient is just wrong. we have to demand more out of our summer recruitment drive, particularly in relation to defenders, than we have seen in any of the last 3-4 seasons.

  6. carney is less likely to give up possession than hoolahan - important when you only have a 1-0 lead. he''s a good player is wes, but he often holds the ball a little longer than he needs to, and because he isnt big enough to effectively shield the ball, he can cause possession in their half to break down into defending our box. he''s got better as the season has gone on in this respect, and this can only be because the coaching staff have identified it as a problem with his game.

  7. saturday highlighted the difference a good managerial appointment can make.

coventry stayed up last season by a single point - they were in dire straits much like we were. but look at the difference between the teams this season. coleman has got a solid looking outfit together who are chasing promotion and claiming premiership scalps in the FA cup - we''re falling further behind in the relegation battle and went out of the fa cup to the only team worse than us in the league. the difference between the clubs couldnt be clearer.

i look forward to seeing the board''s next managerial appointment. it had better be good.

  8. didn''t he say that he''s not likely to invest now due to the credit cruch biting his business?

i think the whole cullum thing is dead in the water - if he buys it wouldn''t be for a few years yet. if someone was gonna buy this club this year they''d either be reckless or far more minted than cullum

in all seriousness though the two major problems that have cost us dear are

    1. injurys to kennedy and stef who were starting to look quality together

    2. and the failure to recruit a decent target man/powerful striker.

if theses factors had not been issues then i fully believe we would have been playoff chasing

you''ve hit the nail on the head there. during the summer it seemed we were signing defender after defender, i mean stefanovic, kennedy, grounds, bertrand, achibald-henville and omozusi all came in. i thought that was a bit ridiculous, seeing as at the time we already had a few defenders of our own. But so it turned out that we needed every one of them (bar TA-H) as well as sammy clingan to scrape together a back four. We''ve had terrible luck with our better defenders and it seems that a few of the not so good defenders struggle to make the grade. defence is clearly an issue that gunny has tried to address with shak and leijer, but we definitely need a thorough re-vamp at the back as we leek far too many.

Upfront, well everyone knows the problems we''ve had there, and cort is looking to be a prudent investment, as i hope mcdonald in the long term and killen and gow will be in the short term.

As pointed out in another thread, we seem to be ok at scoring goals, its just that we concede too many, we need to redress the balance to stay up - indeed it''s what we had to do last season, and we did it with that unbeaten run. just.

Hmmmm yes Semmy hasn''t been as good this season as last, not really sure what his problem was yesterday but I lost count the amount of times he just stood and watched the ball without running or even jogging.  Maybe he''s not been well or had a niggling injury, but if he wasn''t 100% he shouldn''t have been played.  He was in the whole inaffective [:|]

maybe that stuff about him having chest pains is holding him back, if not physically then maybe mentally
